So you all wanted aquatic animals? (evolution sim devlog 2-6)

- I'm working on evolution simulation game The Sapling, my solo indie game project. It's a game where you can basically do two types of things: on the one hand, there are a number of scenarios tasking you to design an ecosystem that meets specific requirements, on the other there is a sandbox where you can build your own plants and animals, turn on 'random mutations', and see how they evolve.
In this video I finally share all details related to aquatic animals, like how the new swimming and breathing systems work and the new procedural swimming animations.

Some sugestions: make the player be able to create limbless animals that can move (such as snakes and worms), as well as sessile animals (animals that don't move, i.e corals, anemonies and bivalves), plus some kind of armor or exoskeleton, and crabs, because an ocean without crabs isn't an ocean, because of carcinization
That is great idea I want that to maybe animals can have bones and some don’t
Hey Samuel, without making promises, indeed cool suggestions. Any ideas how sessile animals would work in the current animal editor?
@@TheSapling I think they could have 2 needs: reproduction and food. I think with the first need they could be like barnicles, that extend one body part to fertilize its neighbours, or it can be through the most common metode of broadcasting spawning, though you could make that more inneficient. Mobile larvea could be great, like the ones of barnicles, where they live as plankton and then find a suitable place to become adults, maybe even having neotony in the game, IDK. As for food, it can be from other animals (i.e anemonies) or filter feeding. Filter feeders could use feathery arms, suction or even using hydrodinamics to stop water, making the food fall into their mouves (this last method was used by tribrachidium, an extinct animal from before the cambrian); this last method could be used by sessile carnivores as well, plus they could use other methods such as sucking prey into their mouves or catching then with tentacles, or even having stinging, venomous tentacles to kill prey (like anemonies). Sorry for the wall of text, I think I over-extended this too much
@@TheSapling mabye if you dont have legs or a special body part that makes the animal move like a worm, the animal just wouldn't move.
@@samuellima6193 That's a great idea.
Though it probably will be very hard to add.
Here be a suggestion: maybe make an ocean floor terrain so people can make things like crabs or snails, animals that live in the water, but rarely (if ever) swim for long periods of time
Hey Rage, without making promises, agreed that this would be cool
The sapling is great because the dev is like "Ok let's try making what the people want" and succeeding
Unless there are some dire bugs on release I suggest sitting back and taking a month or two brake to just relax and be proud of what you accomplished. I remember you said you had a kid and what better way to celebrate then to spend time with the family
Hey Raditz, thanks! This game is developed mostly when my girls are sleeping, so that part's alright. It's more things that I have 2 years of video material that are waiting to be edited into a nice home video for them to enjoy ;)
You should add events that alter the climate, forcing the species to adapt. For example, you could add a random asteroid impact event, which blocks out the sun and cools everything down
Very complicated, but would probably enrich the game greatly.
Its not the same but we are getting seasons this update
thats basically seasons
Whoa whoa there slow down. That could be update four.
Hey Nooklekdoodle, without making promises, indeed a super interesting idea.
This game is slowly becoming the best evolution game out there and I can’t wait until it is done.
Also have you seen the 2d evolution game “the bibites?” If you haven’t, I suggest you do as some of the things that he does for his game(?) could apply to this game too!
yeah they know abt eachother
Yeah it's super cool; I sometimes talk to Léo on Twitter
@@TheSaplingmaybe y'all can collab?
respect for the creator that he made this incredible project all alone
OMG THANK THANK YOU THANK YOUUUUUU OMG THIS IS LIKE THE GAME IVE DREEMED OF!!!!!! Brings a tear to an eye how beautifuly cool this gon be
Worth it.
ye amogus
I want the premiere to not be announced 26 hours in advance so I’m not wishing it was tomorrow already.
I get it but I wouldn’t be complaining. Plus it builds hype.
Both of you have good points
@@wiredjarl1556 that doesnt chnage that the anticipation is irritating. but it is bc im so excited
@@aidanwhite5631 yeah I’m really exited for this update as well. For sure biggest the game has ever seen.
My current thinking is that announcing the episode early will increase the number of people who can watch the episode together during the premiere, hopefully building a bit of a community, but of course this shouldn't come at the cost of annoying anyone. What would you say is the best solution? (1) No premieres, just publish or (2) premieres, but only a few hours before.
This update is going to be absolutely fantastic! Generated world maps, seasons, sounds, and algae and aquatic animals, so many new things to play with!
This is incredible! You have put so much detail and care into this project and it is simply amazing. I love the detail that fins change shape depending on where they are placed on the body
I did want aquatic animals. I also want carnivores that don't go extinct, immediately.
That is such a struggle
Bro i- 😭 same
I mean yeah I agree but aquatic animals is so exciting and it’s awesome he listened to the community
Yeah carnivores just die lol
use instincts
Aquatic life, algae, new animal sound mechanics, a seasons mechanic, a map generator, these all sound amazing!
i like algie being simplistic at least to start off with too, maybe down the road similar to with the animals you can also enable plants to re-evolve to be plant based again
you mean water-based, right?
@@RustyhairedAlp9575 is there a difference between aquatic life and water based life?
You could add an option for animals to eat fish.
Flying animals would be able to dive down an eat one and land animals would be have to use a different mouths to reach further into the water, the base mouth only being able to reach on the coast. The first fish eating mouth could be able to eat meat too.
No point doing this until carnivore can survive after a prey species changes its color, but I do like the idea.
@@CharliMorganMusic yeah carnivores do need an update
I'm a spore fan boy and aquatic stage dang that would have been lit, but now I want the Simulation of an entire world, evolving on its own to survive, occasionally helping steer the destination but having no clear control over it, the biggest vibe this game gives me is Birthdays the beginning but more simulation esq, like spore was originally supposed to be, I don't want a redo of spore, I want a new better, Evolution Simulator Game, and your making mine and others dream game come true! Love the direction this game is going.
To increase biodiversity there should be shallow water/swamp biome where land and water animals would often interact.
Nice
I wonder if there will be an filter feeder mouth
Sadly not in this update, he said he still hasnt figured out how to incorporate plankton into the game, but suposedly plans to do ut eventualy
@@Leyva0scarVRL plankton don’t have to be seen, but I know he likes visual cues
Plankton could probably just be like a purple particle cloud tbh
@@TheRandomWolf or really small animals that you can zoom in close into. And become clouds from faf
@@TheRandomWolf maybe the ocean could bet separated into two biomes(?), shallow and deep, and filter feeding mouths can eat only in the deep ocean biome with and animation similar to what whale sharks do, and another mouth that does an animation similar to what whales do
You should do a new 7 days of evolution video with algae, plants and aquatic animals, to see if they evolve to become land animals.
Indeed plan to do something like that!
Calling your audience mouthbreathers was bold I'm proud of you for that
Haha in that case sorry to say it was not intentional :p
I can't wait, this game is already really good and I can't imagine what will come in the future. Thank you so much
BROOOO you might’ve just single-handedly made what people like us always wanted spore to be, this without the money hungry nature of a big game company as well, thank you for being the hero we needed
Yeah the problem is that you don’t control a single creature, maybe he could add that
I got a few ideas.
Random mutations actually try to evolve, eyes have different sight, lower sight means creatures are not going to be as accurate going to an object, and eye near/farsightedness
OMNIVORE.
brain upgrades, allowing more behaviours
Fix the funny bug where a creature can hear Color’s, cry when they see a high pitched noise, etc.
Bipedal animals and arms.
Basically, evolution = survival
My randomly generated creatures are all herbivores and have bad organs ):
These are some of the many weird things I find in sandboxq
Reward animals with better sensory organs, etc
Maybe a tribal stage for the luckiest animals
DONT FORGET BETAS, where we can test your experimental versions of the game
And workshop
bipedal animals and arms already exist, hes adding omnivores witth this update, and there already are betas just nkt for this update yet didnt you watch the video
I have had the Game now since the "Egg,Plant and Animal Sizes" video but have seen it in CZcams even earlier,i am so hyped for the Update and love that this game is doing good and people Appreciate it
Thrilled you're still updating this game.
The hopeful trifecta: the Sapling, Species ALRE and Thrieve.
species alre does not seem to have a bright future lol
but who knows apparently the creator is just taking a break
You should add more arboreal creatures like primates. Also a swinging mechanic where they can move through the trees without coming down to the ground. Reasons why you should listen to me , monkey cool and more evolution options
Without making promises, agreed this would be cool :)
I love seeing you work on this game! It’s so fun and interesting to learn how you figure everything out :)
This is the coolest evolution game i ever seen!!
amongus
Magnificent! This is so inspirational and so fascinating to see the thought process.
I love your approach to the development of this game!
You're making it something very special that hits all the right spots
Hey, just wanted to leave an appreciation comment - Thank you for your hard work! I thoroughly enjoyed watching these six devblogs, they were very wellmade and gave an interesting insight on the work going into the making of this game. I am amazed how many skills you have aquired while making it.
The update looks marvelous and I am looking forward to playing it! :)
There's a fourth marine mammal group that was wiped out...
I love seeing your progress!!!
Amazing effort! Love this game, really excited to make cool ecosystems in this
Man this sounds like it’s going to be an amazing update can’t wait to play
This looks amazing! Looking forward to trying out the beta branch really soon!
This looks awesome! Seriously, I watch this and now I feel like the major pieces are THERE for this game. In the entire evolution sim genre, this game becomes even more of a unique entity and I can't think of another that has all the elements. I can't wait to play with it, and also for whatever content you have planned next!
I honestly can't wait to try and recreate a duck with this.
As a 'note for later' point, now you have tails implemented it would be cool to see additional behaviour added to them... be that as a weapon, warning, mating ritual, communication etc. Would maybe give the ai more of a reason to auto-evolve them.
This is the best video of them all. You actually did the thing that spore managed to do. ALSO TAILS! AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS, I HAVE THEM. Thanks for that. But what is propably the Base for the most interesting future updates of all are the randomly generated terrain. Imagine the possibilities. Thank you for this amazing update.
Super excited for the update, and with aquatic plants coming around too, adding a feature for plants that allows a customization for branches and other parts similar to Unity's tree system could be nice to give each plant some individuality by making the game create x number of branches or parts across y nodes.
Hey Hexxxed, without making promises, indeed a cool suggestion!
Cant wait! Thank you so much!
I caught on to the series several months late but I have been severely enjoying watching the games progress through these videos. I wish more indeed Developers would do this sort of thing it's been incredibly entertaining and educational to watch many many thanks
first off; amazing job! second one, take indeed the break you need and deserve, it wil fuel you with the drive to keep working on this wonderful project!
Awesome as always !
I'm sad I'll be on vacation away from my computer for the release... but hopefully you and some other biogeeks will post cool videos of the update for me to watch ! ;)
I'm really hyped for the project of a longer experiment sliced in pieces, I will share it with my friends.
Again, thank you very much for creating the awesome game we love and needed so badly, you are doing an amazing job at it !
Love the project! Thank you for making it🙏
What I hope will be in future updates :
- Moss/Grass. It would really improve the feel of the game.
- Snake like animals
- Neck update. We want sauropods !
- Possibility to choose between exoskeleton and internal skeleton
i think the trade off of exoskeletons should be that the creature is harder for predators to inflict harm on the creature most of the time, but the creature has a vulnerable soft phase whenever it needs to grow.
Thanks Ivan, without making promises, all cool suggestions. I guess for exoskeletons, we would also need limbs below the body instead of on the side, right?
@@TheSapling i'm not so sure about legs being underneath the body, since with most arthropods, the legs are still on the sides.
You would obviously have to design some new eggs, mouths, wings, flippers, eyes and legs for the arthropod creatures anyway.
I think you should base the aquatic arthropod carnivorous mouth design on anomalocaris.
As for arthropod eyes, try using mantis shrimp eyes, dragonfly eyes and jumping spider eyes as inspiration for the most advanced types.
@@TheSapling that would be great, yeah. It could be part of a larger "creature creator update", which I think is needed. (I'm thinking of Spore's creature creator, where you can modify the shape of the body a lot, unlike the current version of The Sapling)
would love to see a week sim with all the up dates
I can't wait for this update or future updates this could possibly become the definitive evolution game, or atleast the one I've always dreamed of after playing alot of Spore when I was younger.
Thank you for such a wonderful project
, you fulfilled my dream in which we really look at the development of our biosphere, your project is just awesome. I'm from Russia myself and I don't know why they didn't make videos about your game on your game
, you're just a wonderful developer.
I wish you good luck with the upcoming Update )
Thank you for your efforts !!!
your game looks really good, you really put some effort in this, I hope it gets very famous, and also, I like Samuel Lima's sujestion
This is incredible!
I'm so excited this game has unlimited potential atleast I think so I can't even imagine what this game can become but I'll be here watching and supporting cause this game is amazing
This is sooo awesome, I love this game!
I appreciate all the work being done for this update. I can't wait for the beta release on the 16th of August and full release on the 13th of September! I also have heard that you are working on the predator problems when random mutations are on along with new mouths for omnivores from a different comment.
Great design choices
Just snapped this up on Steam, so excited this looks like everything that I used to wish Spore was :D
I love this update so much
Thanks to you for doing such an amazing game
Thank you for your work!
I have a couple of suggestions
1.Can you add an mountain and caves update?
2It would also be cool if you would add biomes
3. or make the plants diffrent sizes(flowers, trees. On the flowers there could be bugs that can affect other animals and the nests could be on the trees on the trees there could be a hive and animals could evolve to eat it.)
4. events like a meteor shower.
Hey Vito, the game does have different plant and animal sizes, and you can paint all kinds of soil statistics on the ground, and as a result different plants and animal can live there! Without making promises, 1 and 4 are indeed cool ideas!
Some ideas:
Burrowing animals with new claws to dig.
Different fruit types, some are smaller with more seeds and bigger with less seeds.
Smoothly put limbs and parts on creatures like spore.
Octopus body parts
Ability to place rocks, that can allow reefs to appear underwater.
Hey Bread, without making promises, indeed cool ideas! Rocks will appear if you make the soil rocky (instead of soft)
Well, we got fruit times. Now all that's left is.. well, the rest of these.
Damn, you look way younger than you sound, and you are really rocking that young genius look!
Also great work, best evolution sim I've seen so far!
Pffft, the Dev just casually calling all humans mouthbreathers. What a madlad xD
Also, I'm loving the game so far, even if it keeps crashing my old laptop, it's a lot of fun!
Haha as a non-native speaker I wasn't really aware of that expression, but several people pointed it out indeed ;)
Good to know blowholes are a thing (in The Sapling)
I think it'd be worth mentioning, but some air breathing animals, like the Mary River Turtle, have developed "gills". In the case of the latter, it's a modified cloaca that lets them breathe underwater, and they can stay submerged for three days at a time.
Maybe a part that works somewhat like a pseudo gill that allows air breathing animals to stay underwater for longer periods of time could be utilized at some point? It's make for some interesting competition among species.
This looks very interesting
You should add mouth breeding fishes. Many amphibians and fishes keep several of their eggs and even hatchlings safe inside their mouths.
Hey Erlina, thanks! Without making promises, indeed a cool suggestion. The challenge of course is how to make it visible for the player... I guess these fish swim with their mouth closed, right?
And now that I'm making money again, I can feel good about finally purchasing this game. Can't wait to try it out :D
A viable carnivorous semi-aquatic niche should be possible. The ancestors of whales, crocodiles, and extinct phytosaurs all figured out that waiting until land animals were thirsty and ambushing them was one of the most easiest niches to have and to maintain.
Hey Erlina, indeed! The first step towards this idea would be drinking at all, I guess :)
a cool idea to add on this game is the social aspect of the animals, like animals could form complex group like behaviour, like wolf packs with leaders/alphas, or hive colony like ants, bees.
Hey George, thanks for the idea, agreed! The cell/grid based simulation is a challenge for this idea, unfortunately :/
wooo yeah babyyy thats what ive been waiting for
Can't wait!
Looking forward to it
GIVE ME THE FISHEESSS!!!
Ziet er goed uit man 👌 echt knap om te zien waar je je aan waagt. Zelfs grote bedrijven durven dat niet aan.
Dankjewel Jorian :)
Can meat be worth more energy in order to incentivize carnivory?
the only way I got a sustainable population of carnivores was to make the carnivores extremely specialized and the herbivores, just blobs with legs. This would be a welcome change
Hey Callum, there will indeed be some changes in terms of what mouths can eat and how much energy they get out of it, but the 'no carnivore evolution' problem is not the focus of this update. I don't consider this game finished before that problem is solved somehow, though :)
@@TheSapling It would help if you could assign coulour ranges (mabye if you upgraded an animals brain) so that when a herbivore changes coulour the carnivore would still be able to notice it.
that would make sense.
herbivores have to be almost constantly eating plants to gain the energy needed to live wheras carnivores will only eat a few times each month.
this is because the cellulose in plants is less easily converted into energy than the proteins, lipids and glycogen in meat.
the advantages of carnivorism are still balanced out by the fact that prey animals are able to run away or fight back.
@@mrfrog0913 that is... already a thing
so exited for august 16
Between this and thrive i hope we can get something closer to the evolution sim spore was supposed to be before EA decided to time crunch the devs. However only continue if you want to, the one of the biggest killers of quality is the dev(s) not wanting to do what they are doing
You deserve more subscribers. A LOT more! Honestly, the oceans just felt lifeless. Wonder how adding life to the water will contribute to the lag. XD We asked for it!
I’m so exited to get this game! However I think a great addition to the underwater update would be coral for hiding and coral reef ecosystems!
Without making promises, agreed that sessile animals would be cool
cant wait to make spinosaurids like baryonyx, siamosaurus, icthyovenator, ripovenator, suchomimus and so many others!
It's happening! It's happening!!
this looks like a very cool update, i'm excited to play it when it comes out!
also, i can't speak for the whole fanbase ofc, but for me the desire for aquatic life is indeed mostly because of realism - i get there's no way this game can be perfectly realistic, but i've been of the opinion that it'd be nice to have the option for animals to start in the water as strange tubes, a little more like early recognizable animals on our planet. i just find it fun - even when i played spore as a kid, i tried to evolve my creatures semi-realistically :P
(i say "recognizable" because i don't know how reasonable it'd be to have something like hallucigenia or wiwaxia here, let alone the million cones and tubes and quill-things that existed before animals really got the hang of being animals. don't even get me started on sponges)
i have a few ideas that I'll tell you in the next devlog if you're interested.
Hey Gaming Cat, always interested in ideas :)
@@TheSapling :)
holy shit the sapling aquatic arc
Just found this and I’m about to share the hell out of this, I hope this turns into a subnautica type situation where it starts off small and ends up massive
First: No thx 2 you! 🤗 This is so amazing and I will play the game with the beta release. Can't wait for it. 😁
To add aquatic life is so important. And it complete the game perfect. The locomotion animations looks awesome and how the different limbs can evolve from aquatic to terrestrial and from terrestrial to aquatic is stunning! Evolution how it works. 🤓👍🏽
🐟 🦎 🐀 🐿️ 🦅 ... 🐧🐳 Fascinating! 😅
Kind regards from 🇩🇪 Dude! 🤗
Ex astris, scientia! 🚀
i love your game :O
update: just bought it today!!
The next big update could be an organ editor.
It would be one of the last things you learn to do.
The first stomach would be small and be able to digest anything but it is not as efficient as later stomachs.
The first stomach heart and lungs would be atomaticly put into your animal.
I forgot about the brain, I think there should only be four just to not make it overcomplicated
Hey Frog, thanks a lot for the suggestion! A challenge for organs would be how to communicate it to the player: so say you see two identical animals, and one survives and the others doesn't... how to communicate that this is because they have different organs?
@@TheSapling you could say that "animal name" died because it didn't have a heart.
And when you zoom in you can see the organs but they're see through.
All the starter organs would be able to fit into one bit of the body so it's easy to code.
This game reminds me of spore and i loved that game!
You and me both :)
It would be neat if an ecosystem could be saved (like a file with each creature at the time the ecosystem was saved. Name the ecosystem and, whenever, you can do a word search of your saved files, open that file and pull animals and plants to use in any world.)
I just would love to keep certain creatures and be able to have an attachment to them, but also just something to show for. Like an award. But it’s also an award that gives the player some more possibilities to intervene in their worlds.
Hey ACS, thanks for your suggestion! Having some sort of species archive is indeed a request I see more often, and, without making promises, an idea that I like.
and maybe also an trait so that a creature can have more instincts
Yeah you could upgrade an animals brain or somthing.
you mean like brains?
there could perhaps be 3 types: simple, average and complex.
the more complex the brain, the more instincts the creature can develop in exchange for it using up energy faster.
I think it might be a good Idea to add acceleration to movement so that animals slowly accelerate in and out of moving. alongside animals turning more slowly, this could make the animals feel much more alive as opposed to stoping, starting, and turning instantly. I think that could make the game feel more alive without having to rework the basic movement of just picking random positions to move to.
this game is amazing and I just wanted to say that you have done an amazing job.
Hey Darkturtle, fully agreed... It looks especially jarring underwater.
FISH UPDATE LESSGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
It would be really cool if you added burrowing creatures, though that would probably be hard to add.
Hey CaptainCognizant, a simple form of burrowing will be added this update in the form of underground nests!
@@TheSapling oh cool! I didn't know you where already working on it!
one suggestion, for aquatic beaked animals, add a softshell turtle beak(river monster has a good clip displaying it)
Thanks Marxist Monkey for this suggestion, didn't even know turtle mouths were called beaks!
This is so cool. Hopefully someday we can also make animals that crawl on the seabed like crustaceans
Hey Ronin, without making promises, it's an idea I like :)
every day i forget how cute this guy is
Who would have thought that me posting videos to the internet where I talk about geeky stuff would lead to comments like this :P
I would be cool if there were mushrooms! they could possibly evenn evolve from an animal/plant or something
You should add random events like meteor showers or a volcano eruption. They could cause extinctions or things that make it harder for the animals and plants to survive.
Hey Gaming Cat, without making promises, fully agreed this would be cool!
I wanted sea creatures because they are important to a ecosystem, and I commented it because one of your videos had plants In the sea
