    Seeing your boy driving reminded me of mine about 20 yrs ago first time letting him drive the JD316 , got a phone call , came out back to see how he was doing and he was standing on seat going down the yard like a giant skate board. It's funny now but not back then.

    Just a bit of advice, don't make your goal to have a short lawn or it will come back to bite you. By the way this is coming to you from someone that is a horticulturalist and chief gardener for many years. The roots really don't like to get so hot, they like to live in the shade of the stem and leaves of the plant itself. I like to keep a lawn at two inches all summer and shorten it up in the spring and fall. You have to watch how much you push that lawn too because the more sweet and succulent those roots are the more chance you will get grubs feasting on them.

    Actually in the northern states, the best time to roll the ground is in the spring when the frost is gone. The roller flattens the frost heaves so the ground is flat which makes it easier to cut the lawn and make it looking nice........

    It's cute to hear what people who are used to driving road vehicles impression of what tractor brakes should do. Even when putting a pick-up truck with an automatic in park, then driving a tractor onto a trailer connected to a pick-up ... if the trucks drive tires are on an incline, get ready for an exciting ride ... the brakes on a tractor are kinda a mild hint to stop. Keep in mind, the gearing of a tractor is such that if you put your bucket down, you can lift your front tires, and drive forward, only once the bucket is digging in does even that stop the tractor. Mine is at the borderline of pulling either a small 3 bottom, or large 2 bottom plow.
    There might just be a reason that tractor derived from the root phrase "traction engine" just be secure in the knowledge that your brakes are just hints to stop, and drive it accordingly.

    I’ve noticed some likes from you popping up on my favorite lawn guys. I’ve learned a lot from them!
    I’ve been rolling now for the last 3 years, and I bounce around a lot less as I’m mowing. I try to aerate as soon as possible after rolling and I do four passes (horizontal, vertical, and both diagonals) I don’t know how much that reverses any compaction from my roller, but at least it makes me feel better.
    Is that roller something that you offer or may offer in the future? I searched and searched, but never found one that I felt was quality. I ended up getting one from the farm store for around $250. After just 3 seasons, the thin metal is already starting to get dimples and the tongue is so short that I have to make excessively wide turns. If the metal on the roller itself were stronger, I’d have a fab shop make me a longer/stronger tongue with a quality set of bearings.

      Get a used 125 gallon propane tank and have the fab shop build you one. That's what I used when I built mine. That was 28 yrs ago and not a ding anywhere and I'll drive it over anything, including trap rock, rip rap, etc. It doesn't care !

  • @timsawyer7443
    @timsawyer7443 Před 4 lety

    2 things, Courtney (and other folks' comments would be welcome too, of course!):
    1. I've got a yard that's not really a "lawn" like yours is. It's just Bahia grass, and what we cut with the zero-turn mower or finish mower is about 3 acres (about 2 with the former, 1ish with the latter). We live in the deep south where there's really no clay to speak of, mostly dirt, and very few rocks in the soil. It's basically flat land, but with some fairly large undulations because of stuff like buildings, pools, septic systems, and drainage across the lawn. However, because of trees being cut and other equipment being moved around, we have ended up with some undesirable ruts and holes, which makes for a bumpy ride on any mower or tractor.
    2. I've read that if a yard is wet or soft enough for a lawn roller to be effective, the weight of a tractor (JD 3038e, in my case) will create more problems than the roller will fix. Do you think that's the case with my type of yard?
    OK, I guess I now have to add #3...
    3. I started asking you all of this because I was considering buying a roller from you (or at least checking prices), but looking on your website I don't even see any for sale. Do you sell them, and if so can you include a link? Thanks!

    • @GoodWorksTractors
      @GoodWorksTractors  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Tim, there's a fine line with lawn firmness when using a lawn roller. I don't think these work well for ruts or holes, but rather mole damage and frost heaving. Perhaps someone else with experience in your situation will chime in. The manufacturer I sell only makes them once a year for the spring, so I won't have any for quite some time unfortunately.

Now, there’s a year’s worth of comments from experienced guys who share broad use knowledge to go with yours. The equipment and operational advice is no less valuable than it was, but the content added by your “Good Works” community - particularly if you live in Michigan/Great Lakes region - is Golden.
    I bought the 6 foot roller with my 2038R but not until June of 2020. Actually used it for the first time yesterday on heavy clay “acreage” that I mow but it gets rutted until the water evaporates away. I’m going to pull the roller every time I’m mow that area until it firms. My hope is that for the rest of the season, years of tooth shattering bumps will have disappeared. 🤞🤞🤞

    How to Properly Roll a Lawn
    Roll a lawn when the ground is damp but not soaked.
    Do not use too heavy of a roller. Use a lightweight roller when you roll out a grass lawn.
    The best time when to roll the lawn is in the spring.
    Do NOT roll clay heavy soil. Clay heavy soil is more prone to compaction than other kinds of soil.
