In this video, we draw a cupcake with pastels and pastel pencils on PastelMat paper in one sitting. The entire process of drawing and refining is included so that you can draw along and create your own version of the drawing. Start with a sketch of the contour lines before layering pastel applications.

I have found it difficult to find a tutorial that shows the whole process of a topic. This type of video is like going to an art class. I find that this tutorial has taught me exactly how to use pastels in a drawing. The reason for a tutorial is to teach the whole lesson not just bits and pieces. I enjoyed your tutorial and would like to see more of these lessons. You are a great teacher and I have learned so much from your videos.
I love this idea! Please do more of these using different media.
I love this new idea! Gettin' Sketchy is great for fun and learning, this format is great as a practice-along. Thanks for trying it, I hope you'll do more.
I really enjoyed this video. This format of sitting down & watching it from beginning to end makes me slow down & enjoy the process
The best Part with that kind of drawing is when you are done, and finally eat your model (given it's a real one and not just a photo) 😁
I've been drawing with graphite and charcoal for years but I recently wanted to try colored pencils and pastels. This video popped up and I subscribed immediately! So many "how to" videos just show 10 minutes explaining briefly and showing stages of a drawing. I absolutely love the long real-time follow along with commentary style of this video. I'm excited to start, thank you for your videos and channel!
🧑🏽🎨 YES! More please 😊
I like both formats. The back and forth between you and the other artist is fun. I believe I would be more likely to draw along with this one. I don't know why.
I love this format. For me, the real time video is helpful in encouraging me to sit down for a similar length session instead of immediately thinking that I can't do this at all. I also love the pertinent info that you give along the way.
Yes, for me is thinking things take way less time than they actually take and then I rush and get not so great results. Real life demos are very useful. That's why I love getting sketchy so much
I like the real time view. Thank you! I also enjoyed the sketchy series.
You are so talented!
Outstanding video. I simply can not draw. I practiced for years every day and took classes. I watched and followed videos and finally gave up!
Your videos are fantastic, and enjoy your personality.
I saw a comment about the background music. I love music and interestingly this music stressed me😂 It is mysterious.
Thank you.
Really enjoy doing this with u all
You did a great job drawing the cupcakes to make them look delicious🤤
Hi Matt, Amazing how you keep coming up with new and interesting ways to present real, real-time instruction. A really great job of instruction over the
actual work. Im a long time subscriber and while the medium is not always my favorite I watch anyway. tomee
Amazing content. I love your classes
I appreciate that!
Your membership program saved my life when I was teaching a full year of art for high schoolers thank you so much for your dedication to art!!!!
Now I am brushing up on my drawing skills with your real time videos !
Superbe démonstration, il like this and il will draw it, many thanks from Montréal.
I just came across this vid in my feed. The cupcake is beautifully rendered. and you make it so easy to follow along with you. I was a bit baffled, however, by your choice of the gray shading on the icing. where I would have chosen more towards subtle yellow/browns. Of course it's an artist's choice and who cares?...it's so well done. Thanks.
Yes please. Have enjoyed this video very much. I like to try to draw along with you but I am not as precise as you as I like to keep it sketchy as I have no intention of trying to get it to look as realistic as you
Did the muffin with you. It obviously wasn’t as good as yours but, for my 1st. try with pastel pencils I‘m pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the slower sketch allowing me to follow!
This is the news I needed today because I’m sick and miserable with on off season flu. I’m really excited for this format because I struggle the most with being patient and taking the time to develop the painting I want to make. So I think this will keep me focused so I can develop the habits I need to improve. Thank you so much! Also, I don’t want gettin’ sketchy to go away, so I vote for both formats.
Yes!! Absolutely love this. I'm working through the portrait drawing course right now but these are great. My daughter and I used this as a "draw and sip" tonight. 😂
Yes, please. This is informative and inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, talent and teaching.
Great 🎉 love this format
I love this type of content!
Great video Matt, would love to see some pen and wash.
Great video, as always! I found the various camera angles very useful. It gave a better 'read' of the colours and of the actual size of the drawings.
I specifically seek out real time tutorials. I enjoy not being rushed and having to hit pause all the time. Although, I have painted along with gettin sketchy. I never miss an episode. There is much to be said for both. If I have to chose I’ll go with real time. I enjoy painting along with friends.
Love this project
I lost my mother who was an art teacher, then its like it went to me, since I used to draw while I was in school and loved it. Then lost my wife in January so drawing gets my mind off things. You have been a big influence and inspiration for me, I hear I'm getting a lot better, I guess I am my only critic. Even though I know they're just being nice but thank you
Love this type of format. I will definitely be watching for more.
This is great. Thank you
These are great!
Enjoyed it.thank you
Love it!
Wonderful lessons. I enjoy all your content. This was great.
I really liked doing this kind of content Matt.... can't wait for the next one...
Love it! More of these please!
You got it!
Can't wait to try this. I'm already behind in your animal pastels course 😅 Wasn't happy with my first try of the golden lab.
Hey Matt, the best start to my day! Brilliant idea, thank you so much. You probably know that July is watercolour month, so just a little suggestion 😉 since ink and wash is one of my favourite mediums. Looking forward to the next video, irrespective of the medium. 💜
awesome
Yes very helpful
If you are going to call this a ‘paint/draw along’ then please leave the photo reference on screen at all times for us
Love watching your process with explanation. Does your pastel board have a sanded surface? You seem to be able to get a lot of layers. I really am learning a lot from your instructions. Thanks so much!
Matt is using PastelMat paper. It is made by Claire Fontaine. He didn't need to do anything to the surface since it is manufactured with this surface. It is really a unique, but the best surface for pastel work. It is really expensive in my country, but worth it. Enjoy!
I would have thought the shadows would have been shades of tan or brown to compliment the creamy color of the photo.
Hi, the background was changed to blue. Cast shadows are typically darker values of the color of the surface in which they appear. They have nothing to do with the color of the object that is casting them.
@@thevirtualinstructor I was speaking of the cupcake icing. I liked the blue background and the shadows. I just would have probably used shades of cream to brown for shading on the icing part. Either way, the outcome was awesome.
Ahhhh! Bothers me when you blow the pastel dust! I vacuum it up. Particles can get into the air and into your lungs!
Can you add more layers using the hard pastels than you can with the soft pastels?
The background music is just right. It makes me settle to focus.
Love the video. Hate the background music!
Matt, will these videos substitute the 45 min sketchings?
No. Gettin' Sketchy is a Live show and the drawings are sketches. This video is more like the videos I've made for years, just presented in real-time without a lot of editing.
@@thevirtualinstructor Thanks! I miss a lot the 45 min sketches!
I really enjoy the instruction, and would like mire of these.
Hiwever, i would suggest you re-evaluate your choice of music. I found it very distracting way too loud at times. and
Can you do one for holographics?
I am from India
