I cannot sing to save my proverbial- or actual- life. I’ve literally only just discovered Adele (yes I know, where the effin H have I been, I’m nearly 50 ffs!!). So, anyhoo, I’ve finally discovered Adele and repeatedly wail Rolling in the Deep on every car journey I make - which is a lot as I’m lazy- at such a hideous pitch that NASA probably think they’ve made contact with the unknown. I then decided to google how to sing it nicely. Please bear in mind I still cannot sing… I found some other lovely singing coaches first. I still wailed. BUT THEN…. I found this bloody fantabulous coach … I did all the exercises as given. Despite having more rose wine on board than us decent on a boring Tuesday evening. And… omfg… I don’t sound nearly as shit. I’m SO impressed that I’m going to look into this bloody amazing singing coach’s 5 step programme. (so sorry I can’t go back and find your name now I’m writing comment!!) Anyway, you effin ROCK mrs singing coach and I’m your new fan girl!! Ps hope I don’t sound like a stalker, I have adhd and BPD so neurodivergent in that I feel extremely deeply and just want to give credit where it’s due that you’ve sparked an ‘omfg I actually can learn to sing’ in me. Hi Vladi. These guys are great singers and there are a lot of technical things that they are capable of. But one of the things these singers all have is that they are able to create a lot of texture by wrapping their tone with an airiness that they can weave in and out of. What I love about JK is that I can hear every breath he takes. This is REALLY important for a singer. The first step to great singing is knowing where every breath needs to be in the song. They will also be different depths as taking in air is not a same size breath each time. AND making sure that you are breathing correctly. I teach my students to take in air through the mouth (this gets air into your lungs the fastest) and then you should feel some sort of expansion in your mid section as you fill up with air. If your shoulders are coming up, it may mean you are sucking in your mid section instead of expanding it which I call backwards breathing and you won't have the air to support your notes with good pitch, have power when you need it, or be able to "pad" the tone with air. In order for me to sing "We could have had it all", I feel like I'm yelling where as the other lyrics don't sound like I'm yelling but they do sound powerful. It really taxes my vocal cords & afterward, I'm hoarse. Do you have any advice?
Hi There. If you are getting in the right singer's breath (I feel it as air in/tummy out) then you are engaging the right amount of diaphragm support with what I fell is a pull to the backbone, then you shouldn't be getting hoarse as you are supporting well. To connect to your diaphragm support, take in a big singer's breath, and be aware of pulling your tummy back towards your backbone and "call" "HEY". This connects you with your diaphragm support and power. If you are doing it correctly, you shouldn't be getting hoarse. Another thing that might be an issue is that the key may be a half step too high. Try it a half step down. Most karaoke sites let you manipulate the key on the site before purchasing the song. Let me know how it goes. Also, if you go to my website www.5pointsingingsystem.com and click on "free teaching" there is a lot of insight to improving vocal technique. Good luck!
Hi Qween. If it hurts, you may be breathing too deeply. A good exercise to get in touch with the proper singer's breath is to lie on your back with a heavy book just above your belly button. Then take a breath in through your mouth and make the book rise to the count of 4. Then sing "AH" on the exhalation, letting the book fall slowly to the count of 4. Be aware of not over extending to the point of it hurting. Once you have done this a few times, stand up and make the same movements which is the singer's breath. Also, when you breathe in a song, each breath will be a different size according to the demand of the phrase that follows it. Hope this helps. Happy singing.

Absolutely. Listen to singers like Alicia Keys or Lady Gaga, you hear them breathe and in my opinion, it adds a human/emotional element to the song. However, if you are over breathing frequency or depth - wise it may sound a little weird. Once you figure out the breathing rhythm that works for you, it's a game changer and makes the delivery of the song feel easy. Happy Singing!
