  • Hello, in this video I am going to visit Bortle 3-4 skies to capture the Perseid meteor shower and Milky way. I also wanted to see how big the difference is compared to my Bortle 5 backyard. It was amazing!

    I always love comparisons like these. It just shows how only a single level up the bortle scale can restrict u from viewing so much in the sky. I am blessed to have some bortle 3 and 2 skies just an hour away from me

    Put it this way if you live in Bortle 6 to 9 skies as I do(6 to be sure)Bortle 4 is worth traveling to get to but Bortle 5 isn't.Bortle 5 is the beginning of the acute light saturation of the sky so has more in common with Bortle 6 than 4.

    I guess I should feel grateful; My backyard is bortle 4, 10 minutes up the hill top Bortle 3, 30 minutes more to bortle 2, and 1:45 to bortle 1

    Nice comparison. The quality of the skies makes a huge difference in the final results, even when using light pollution filters.

    I'm so happy to be next to a Bortle 4 sky. I saw the galaxy for the first time a week ago as glowing light gray clouds in the sky in a huge band overhead. At first I was like what am I looking at??? Then I realized

    Shooting directing is arguably more important. You can be in bortle 5 but shooting out toward bortle 1 or 2 and get incredible results

    I live in a Bortle 3 area, but to me it still isn't really dark. A one hour drive from here it is Bortle 2. Would that make a big difference?

    • @samwarfelphotos
      @samwarfelphotos Před 6 měsíci +2

      For imaging, not NEARLY as much as 4 to 5, or any jump above 5, due to the logarithmic nature of the scale.
      For naked eye observing, it would make more of a difference (again, due to how our eyes perceive brightness on a logarithmic scale)

    Thanks, and nice video. That's a long way to go for imaging (for me, LOL) I especially liked the comparison. Looked pretty much accurate. I'd have to say my images are on a level with Jizerka area and perhaps only slightly darker. But then I've only been doing astrophotography for about a year and still learning.
    My backyard is classified as Bortle 4. However, I can text my immediate neighbors if needed and get them to cut their outside spots and yard lights on nights I want to image. That makes it more like, prob Bortle 4 to 3 skies here.
    The biggest problem here is not Bortle levels but clear skies. Not nearly enough of them, especially this year here in upstate NY US. My backyard is also just under three acres and that helps. I have a river that runs through the way back part of my property with a mostly old-growth tree line along it that blocks the night hue form Rochester, NY which is about 35 miles west of here.
    Hoping to get some images posted soon (still learning video editing) on my CZcams channel, NORTH AMERICAN ASTRO.
    Thanks again and cs!

      Well, even in bortle 9 you can see a few stars, but definitely not as much as in bortle 3-2. I heard that under the bortle 1 sky you can't even make out the fainter constellations because of how many stars are visible.
