  • After a nearly week-long manhunt for two suspects believed to have killed one person and wounded another on the outskirts of Calgary, one suspect has been arrested while the second remains on the run.
RCMP said they arrested and charged Arthur Wayne Penner, 35, of Edmonton, with the first-degree murder of Colin Hugh, a Rockyview County employee, as well as attempted murder of another person.
Additionally, RCMP said they’ve identified a second suspect in the homicide in Rocky View County that kicked off the manhunt.
An arrest warrant for murder is now out Elijah Blake Strawberry, 28.
    Meghan Cobb reports.

They’ll be sent to a sweat lodge and the elders will absolve them of guilt. Yes, that suspect is indigenous and likely we’ll find out his partner is hiding out on a reserve east of Calgary. We know that the judge will have țo consider the past harm done to ALL indigenous people and it’s quite likely that the victim’s family will not be happy with the eventual sentencing.
I’m 66 and still traumatized growing up poor with an alcoholic father. Throughout much of my teens I feared I would be a victim of familicide. I wonder what sentence I would get if I go out today and randomly murder a roadside worker? Will the judge take into consideration that I still have nightmares of myself in a life and death fight with my father, and that several times I’ve fallen out of bed while swinging and kicking in my sleep?
Will it matter that it’s been five decades and that I forgave my father before he died in 1983? You can forgive and yet still carry that trauma for a lifetime. I’m just wondering how many generations there’ll be before every abuse victim will be given equal justice under the law. For now one group has the current privilege to have generational trauma especially considered when it comes to sentencing. Indigenous people have and deserve that right, but sooner rather than later we need to say, “Physician, heal thyself”.
We’re, again rightfully, returning to you billions of dollars and autonomy over millions of acres (all deserved). We have sincerely apologized for all the past and current harms caused by our white supremacist colonization. We recognize you as First Nations of Canada.
Now is the time to use the money and land to build a society where elders ask for forgiveness from their children and share with them a a plan for a brighter future. Only your leaders can find the way and give the hope your youth so desperately need. Leave the darkness behind as best as one can and know that nightmares will just be nightmares. Don’t perpetuate past traumas into new traumas.
Yes, this sounds like a happy fairy tale conclusion to the dark times you’ve suffered through, and likely you’re wondering why a white guy has the gall to address these concerns. Human pain is suffered by all and all must take responsibility. The clock is ticking and soon enough the white people will be in the minority here. A new majority will likely not be as sympathetic towards your past and not feel responsible for it. You must be strong but law abiding, which I hope for all nations living in this land called Canada.
Canada is multicultural now and there’s no turning back on that, no matter what those on the right say. We have many refugees with similar experiences as our indigenous peoples. Most immigrants are coming from non-white countries who also suffered under English, French, Spanish, Portuguese or Belgian and Dutch rule. Some of these places have also been fighting one another long before the white explorers showed up here. Around the world lands have changed hands for millenniums and very few have willingly done so.
Wars over disputed land are still being fought. Some of these wars include genocide, and yet here in Canada we’ve moved further than anyway in efforts to rectify past sins. If you wish to call it cultural genocide so be it. We still have to get past the arguments over descriptors and definitions and keep working to make things morally right.
I believe it’s time for First Nations to also make a moral journey and unite together to strengthen one of the most important principles of a nation - justice, and justice for all.

Amen and well said! I’m a First Nation of Canada and my mother and father were both in residential schools at young ages and got minimal education. I grew up in the north country,we didn’t have much but we never went hungry with all the wild game and fish in walking distance. I’m a tradesmen that worked all over Canada and the U.S and paid my share of taxes all my life. My parents were hard workers in the community I grew up in and paid their dues to society over many decades. They never talked about residential schools at all or use it as an excuse for anything. They had pain. Three things they mentioned and instilled in me and my siblings was to (1)get an education(2)stay out of trouble (3)work hard and honestly for your money and life will treat you good.
