  • We were recently invited to be on an episode of Dr. Phil. At first, it felt like a great opportunity, but we eventually decided to decline the invite. In this episode, we explain why we are so happy that we did.

    Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
    Hannah is a senior at Carleton College, studying sociology and anthropology. She works as a researcher for an educational consulting firm. Her future aspirations include attending law school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
    Shane and Hannah have been dating for 3 years and living together in Minneapolis for a year. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

There are a LOT of reasons a person/couple may not be willing/able to have sex, and i am directly affected by many of them (sexual orientation, disability, abuse issues). Our relationship is just as valid as any other - just as your relationship is valid.

      @dustinweaver5040 Před 3 lety +12

      While that statement is wrong by Dr. Phil, there is a bond that is created by having sex with your partner that can’t be forged in other ways. It’s biologically evident as well. Your brain sends all sorts of chemicals through your system that help create that bond and your brain literally associates that person with love and happiness. True, that can occur in other ways, but not to the same extent as with having sex. It doesn’t mean your relationship isn’t real, but it is a biological fact that sexual intercourse creates a stronger bond with your partner neurologically speaking.

    • @treywhite4186
      @treywhite4186 Před 3 lety +15

      @@dustinweaver5040 I agree that sex can create a unique bond between partners, it isn't necessary for a loving marriage. Lots of couples can't have sex for one reason or another - it doesn't make them any less committed to each other.

    As someone who was in an abusive relationship, I don’t think there’s a way to come back from that kind of treatment of each other, so I do think the advice to break up was warranted in that case. It can actually be really dangerous when couples in abusive relationships seek out couples therapy because the goal is often to preserve the relationship. This has nothing to do with disability and caregiving though! Perhaps related, my abusive ex called me an “invalid” because I was going through a chronic pain flare up toward the end of our relationship. I had to exit that situation because I knew I couldn’t survive with someone who was unable to accommodate me or even just let me prioritize my own needs.

As you go through life together, it's only a matter of time before one partner needs physical or mental help with something... how the heck can you be expected to separate love from caregiving? I think it speaks to your own beliefs that you cannot believe that an interabled relationship could be a happy one, even when somebody expressly says that it is. Not only did you make the right decision, but also your point about caregiving and being in a relationship being perfectly possible is so true. No one in a committed relationship knows what the next day will bring, perhaps your partner will get flu and you will need to nurse them, or for some people a dreadful illness like dementia or injury. If you love someone truly then being there to provide care for them if they need it is part of the deal. Also it is clearly not just one way in your relationship. Shane clearly cares for Hannah in many ways, even if he is limited in what he can do physically.

    I love these two. I’m so happy they are married now - gives me hope in the world for true love. I’m glad you turned down the show and protected your privacy.

    Wow! You two are awesome. So many other couples would have still gone on the show just to gain viewers. I love how well you guys get along, I’m a new viewer and will most likely go back and watch all your previous shows.

    I have a 3 year old son with cerebral palsy and although his disability is completely different than Shane’s seeing the two of you together gives me hope that he’ll be able to find an amazing person who looks past his disability and sees him for his personality. I love how well the two of you get along, keep up the amazing videos

      Having a parent like you seem to be, who loves, cares and guides his way, makes him a very lucky human! So he learns that he is worth to be loved! That's all that matters to reach that goal for him! God bless you! Much love from Austria!

      Thank youu, it’s him who makes me feel like the one who’s loved. Sometimes it’s hard not to worry about whether or not people will return the love he gives but then I’m reminded other people don’t matter

      Hey he probably will!! My best mates fiance has severe cerebral palsy, her disability didn't stop her personality shining through and touching his heart, It isn't easy by any stretch her mobility is getting worse as we approach our 30's, but they make it work. I am hopeful your son finds the same!!

    You guys definitely did the right thing. I don’t know anyone with disabilities but I am addicted to your guys show. It changed how I think of love and I love that you guys kept the same message, that love is love and you can love who ever you want without boundaries. 💙
