  • The eminent scholar of Islam, Maulana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani, provided a brief but perhaps one of the best explanation if not the best, on the subject of Whirling, as practiced by the Whirling Dervishes of Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi.
This explanation was part of a Question & Answer session during a public lecture in Singapore entitled "Longing for the Divine" on Tuesday 9 June 2009 at Singapore Expo Conference Hall.

There are different styles of Zikr in different suffi orders but the whirling derveshes of Mevlevi order are famous because of openness of Turkey for suffis. . All have their own styles of zikr which is concealed to zikr mehfils. Darveshes of Damascus have their own style and suffi orders of North Africa has its own way of zikr and also suffis of Indian subcontinent but all have the same objective which is to seek enlightenment and love of GOd (Allah). Some examples of zikr practices in Indo-pak mostly Qadiri and Naqshbandiya wajads and of Africa and Turkey are:

Thank fot what? This is djahl.. the islam is not build on movement and feelings.. the islam is what Allah ta'ala says (Quran) what the prophet sallahoe alaihi wa sallam said (the Sunnah) with the understanding of the sahabah and taabi'ien and taabi taabi'ien (the selef).
So don't compare the deeds of the prophet (walking around the ka'bah) what is a ibadah in islam.. with this whirling who someone says is to show his love.. so he found out a better way then the prophet to show love to Allah? La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.. a'uzhubillah

The Great Mawlana Rumi Lineage and Whirling of Abu Bakr Siddiq 1st Whirling Dervish
His name is Jalaluddin Muhammad, son of Bahauddin (1), son of Ahmad (2), son of Mevdud (3), son of Sabit, son of Museyyeb (3), son of Mutahhar (5), son of Hammad (6), son of Abdur Rahman (7), Sayyidi Abu Bakr As Siddiq.
... Archangel Gabriel appeared to our Master in the same unseemly outfit that Abu Bakr was wearing. When the Prophet said to Gabriel that he had never seen him in such strange clothes, Gabriel replied that today all the angels in the heaven were so dressed to honor Hazrat Abu Bakr, the loyal, generous and faithful.
Allah Most High was sending blessings and salutation to Abu Bakr. Gabriel said, "Tell him his Lord is pleased with Him if he is pleased with his Lord."
When Abu Bakr came into the presence of our Master and heard the good news from the lips of beloved Prophet, he got up, thanked Allah, said, "Indeed I am pleased with my Lord!" and in his joy (whirled) around three times.
Quoted from Ibn al-Husayn al-Sulami's Kitab al-Futuwwah (The Way of Sufi Chivalry). Ibn al-Husayan is a highly respected sufi saint and scholar the text founded on very strong isnad (chain of authorities).

That was a show. This is how African people greet or honour celebrities. You can even see that today on news.
It's not a way of worship.
Regardless of how nice this looks or feel, it is an innovation.
The problem here is that in Islam you have to following the way/teaching of the prophet Muhammad (saw) otherwise you are corrupting the Deen (religion). With small changes over time Islam will not be recognisable from that taught and practice by the prophet (saw) and his companions.
THIS IS NOT THE SUNNAH OF THE PROPHET (SAW). He (SAW) said if you do not follow my sunnah you are not of us !!
Narrated Anas bin Malik: A group of three men came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet asking how the Prophet worshipped (Allah), and when they were informed about that, they considered their worship insufficient and said, "Where are we from the Prophet as his past and future sins have been forgiven." Then one of them said, "I will offer the prayer throughout the night forever." The other said, "I will fast throughout the year and will not break my fast." The third said, "I will keep away from the women and will not marry forever." Allah's Apostle came to them and said, "Are you the same people who said so-and-so? By Allah, I am more submissive to Allah and more afraid of Him than you; yet I fast and break my fast, I do sleep and I also marry women. So he who does not follow my way in religion, is not from me (not one of my followers)." (Sahih Bukari Book #62, Hadith #1)

Muhammad pbuh not only sat and watched these men show their love for his character and personality, Muhammad's wife sat behind him and also watched. Had this been a bad act then Muhammad would have reprimanded them, after all They were sent to forbid evil and promote Good.
On another occasion a man was playing the flute and Muhammad pbuh placed their fingers in their ears and continues to walk past. He wasn't reprimanded but distain was shown to their ummah reminding them that flutes should be kept away from.

There is a difference in "everything" moving and "everyone" moving. "Things" are life-less and will be destroyed and need not Answer Allah about how they spent their life, "One" or human has life/soul and has to Answer Allah about life spent on earth.
Jannat or Jahannam is not for "things" but for "humans" who did good or bad or unkowingly got led astray by Shaitan.
