    Nice! For a more accurate template, you can cover the part with masking tape, trace the part, remove the tape and flatten it out on your steel. That way you'll have just the right amount of material once you incorporate the bends. Great video, as always.

    I doubt you could have even ordered a new one in the time it took you to make an upgraded part.
    It's rare to find someone these days with the skills to do this sort of thing. It was far more common 50 years ago.

    Best part is that you 1) didn't have to wait for shipping times, 2) you didn't have to waste time running to your parts store to chase it down...and risk them not even having the right part... I am of your same mindset. Love the videos brother. Keep them up!!

    Some people think my entire lifestyle revolves around doing this sort of thing. LOL They may be correct. Last time I fabricated parts for a door opener, was inside the tailgate of my 89 f250. Just like this one, there are two parts in there that are cheesy. I made my own parts from steel. Tailgate now opens with one hand.

    Re making parts is something I like to do also ,especially when you can improve upon it. In this instance I would be considering hardening the piece, especially due to fracturing of cold bending. I would also consider why it broke in the first place, usually due to other worn or sticking parts in the mechanism it is operating. Just a simple spray of lubricant in latch can make a difference.

    • @jonathan1427
      @jonathan1427 Před 2 lety

      Hard parts are brittle parts. I would heat treat to normalise the part after cold-forming, removing stress. Bluing would provide corrosion protection. And yeah, slather it in grease.
