It's crazy how underrated this game is. Easily one of the best in the genre but like you said, I think the new player experience turns people away.
I have a couple other minor gripes with the game:
- The sound design leaves a lot to be desired and at times it can be annoying to listen to. I feel like having satisfying sound effects in this genre is important.
- XP orbs seem to clump together without it being visually obvious. They stack onto nearby orbs which can make it hard to tell how much xp is in one area. I kind of wish there was an option to just have the orbs all be seperated.
- Visual impact is lacklustre. There's not really any hit effects when hitting an enemy. Something simple like having enemies subtly flash white when they take damage would be nice.
Good point about the audio. The damage numbers popping up was enough for me visually to know I was landing hits but there's definitely room for them to add more options for effects to toggle on.
If you like this, I recommend (if you haven't already played them) Deep Rock Galactic Survivors, Death Must Die or Halls of Torment. They are all in EA but are great examples in the genre.
After about ~40 in the game I find myself always playing the same strat: Pick ONE skill and max it out, no ultimate and most passives arent even worth the points, in shop sell all your levels for gold, buy relics and upgrades for this one skill. This is the strongest strategy imho because all upgrades and multipliers apply to the same skill which then scales immensively. Unfortunately this takes a lot of the fun out.
Yeah, on one hand I like that you can create the same build consistently if you want to but on the other hand it doesn't force you to experiment at all.

New king? This game is horrible. I tried to like it, played more than 3 hours but I had to uninstall because this game is extremely frustrating. It is nothing compared to Vampire Survivors.
