    I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times and he is a super nice guy. His physical issues were not within his control and it’s a shame….of course. But more importantly is his ability to move on beyond that and have a great life.

      Oden was nice. His game was a mix of Shaq and Russell. When he went to Portland, and they had Roy, I remember that being like if Roy is healthy, this team are instant contenders.
      Brandon Roy
      LaMarcus Aldridge
      Greg Oden
      Batum and Fernandez were also rookies that year
      Plus these guys had size for days Camby and Howard (Juwan). Scariest what if imo.

    Oden played three future all stars & all defensive team members at his position in his ncaa career(Horford, Noah & Hibbert), & he absolutely dominated all of them.

      He had medical red flags coming out of college which should have been identified but weren't. His legs weren't the same length which led to his injuries and downfall. Could have been corrected if caught early and he missed a few years recovering. He would have been a nice pro and he was dominating in college.

    It was the correct call to draft him #1. He was a generational talent felled by injury. As someone who coaches young volleyball players, his landings are horrific. If you don't teach vb players to land correctly, over time, their backs/knees give out.

      @treecosmos386 Před 2 lety

      How are you supposed to land to avoid injuries?

    • @the_flushjackson
      @the_flushjackson Před rokem

      You can coach landings fine, but really it boils down to properly training strength and mobility from the feet, ankles, knees and hip so that they work in concert and eliminate injuries that are building up due to imbalances in strength and mobility. Unfortunately, most of this knowledge just wasn't developed enough until the last 5 - 7 years (and it's continuing to evolve).

    The fact that you have a 5 minute highlight reel of basically just his tournament games in his 1 year in college should tell you just how good he was. Even more they didn't really show any of his defensive highlights which was a big part of his dominance too.

      You see Ayton succeeding right now with the Suns. I don’t see anything that’s gonna stop Oden from becoming a star. He is more mobile than Hibbert and Jefferson. Dwight is still very effective in today’s era. Oden without the injuries would have challenged Dwight with the “who is the best center in the league” debates.

      Oden was a better athlete than Durant. He was faster down the court, agility drills, vertical, he easily would have done well in the NBA. Put him in pick and rolls, had far more athleticism than most current centers in the NBA. He never would have been a dominant offensive force but he would have been a good third to fourth option and still a great defensive player. Brook Lopez is still a really good defensive player in today's game and Oden was far more athletic.

      Greg Oden was just much bigger than most of the players he faced in college. And even then, these highlights are misleading. He had many games where he struggled to score, in part because he was notorious for getting a lot of fouls quickly. Oden quite a few 8-point games and lots of times looked lost on the court. He had no post moves and he was very mechanical offensively.

When you get to the NBA you can’t just dunk on everyone that easily unless you’re Shaq but he ain’t even close to Shaq’s build. @SQUASHUA offensively yes, he was robotic and still developing. Defensively though he was a beast. He had great defensive instincts, knew how to read the offense, that's where his talent early on was. He probably would have had a similar career as Dwight, good offensive player while he had his athleticism but mostly a defensive terror.

    It's easy to say now that they should've drafted Durant but everybody thought even back then that you needed a dominant big guy to win titles. And Oden indeed was that in college on both ends of the court. Averaged 16/10/3blks and made the National Championship game (Where he was awesome). I'm not sure how his game would've fit in todays perimeter oriented league and if we knew back then that that's the league is heading there's no doubt KD would've gone 1st overall. But Oden was still an awesome talent that got ruined by injuries

      @michaeljohnson7945 Před 4 lety

      Greg Oden was very mechanical, had no real offensive game outside of a dunk, was incredibly foul-prone and had a questionable motor. Most of these plays are over players considerably smaller than him. His averages were 16/10 when rounded up, but his numbers had wild swings -- he could go 6/3 with four fouls in 15 minutes of play in one game, 18/10 the next game. The biggest misconception about Oden is how he played in the 2007 national championship game was a typical game from him. In reality, it was a rare game where he was engaged and active consistently.
      And Oden was never a better player than Kevin Durant -- not in high school, college or the NBA. And finally, medical doctors predicted Oden would have major injuries when they examined for the 2007 NBA draft, so let's not act like it was a shock.

      @@EtoTheKay dude, do you know anything about basketball? Nobody knew anthony bennett was gonna go first, he was thought to be a late lottery pick. Greg oden in the nba was a beast and a half when he played. In his second season, he was playing EXACTLY what was expected of him from the blazers: a player who contributes both offensively and defensively. He averaged nearly a double double and 2 blocks in just 24 minutes a game, he was good, pretty much knew the blazers got a generational big man. But the injuries got him.
