- A Nightmare on Elm Street
Directed by: Wes Craven
Starring: Robert Englund, Johnny Depp and Heather Langenkamp
Nancy Thompson (Langenkamp) is suffering from violent nightmares about a badly burned man wearing a glove made of knives. She quickly learns that this man -- child murderer Freddy Krueger -- is also terrorizing the dreams of her friends and boyfriend, Glen (Depp). As they begin to die one by one in their sleep, Nancy learns, that years prior, the parents of Elm Street burned Krueger alive -- and now Freddy is back to claim their children's lives as revenge! As the teenagers of Elm Street fight to stay awake, Nancy must save their lives and her own by bringing Freddy out of their dreams and back into the real world to destroy him forever.

Some iconic horror villains, you can argue, were innocent. But Freddy was bad long before he became a dream demon.

Yeah and they almost did 2010 Freddy Krueger being innocent but they rejected it honestly I would've loved to see that twist it would've been unique.
Yeah I don't like that I liked it better when it was ambiguous of if he did it or not they should have kept it like that
I'm so lucky I got to see this when it opened in theaters. I heard about it through a friend and rushed out to see it. Word of mouth is how films reached bigger audiences back then.
Fun Fact
When Wes Craven first tried to show this movie to a major Hollywood studio they turned it down. They didn't understand the concept of dying in your dreams meant dying in real life.
So Wes found New Line Cinema who got the concept and only agreed to show the movie if Wes agreed to make it a franchise with sequels which Wes didn't want to do but had no choice or else the 1984 original would never see the light of day.
Freddy has one of the creepiest back stories.
TheRatedIX7 the bastard son of 100 maniacs.
Not one of, probably THE creepiest backstory.
And don’t forget the power he had on the Springwood town as well as the ancient dream demons that where trying to find the most evil and twisted person to be born to make them a deal too live in dreams forever. and when the parents had burned him at that point that’s when they’re search came to a end, and to finally give their host Fred Krueger the power of reality and dreams coming to one. And so as Freddy said it when he finally came back with that power he said quote “that was then this is now he then cuts him self and green ,red ,purple type of ooze comes out then he says Springwood’s nightmares are just the beginning. Evil laugh comes in. Fades in to black And the rest is history. A scene in the rarely seen A nightmare on elm street TV series.
They messed up his backstory in the remake.
@@VampireA1056 no shit, wtf were they thinking? The original from Wes Craven made a lot more sense because Freddy got off on a technicality so the parents had no choice but to take matters into their own hands and burn Freddy alive.
In the bullshit 2010 remake they changed Freddy's backstory into a pedophile gardener that didn't even go to court. So it got seriously watered down.
In a deleted scene of this one Nancy's mother also tells how Freddy Killed Nancy's brother before she was born
This is one scary scene. No flashbacks, just the chilling, dull monotone of a emotionally broken, mentally fragile housewife recalling a haunting story. She pulls out of the knives, to confirm this tale, to that creepy as hell background music, and whispers; "He can't get you now, honey, because Mommy killed him."
AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH
IdiosyncraticCat you know realistically, what is so scary about a guy with fishing knives at the end of a gardeners glove? Just divert the slash I mean give me a break. I’m sorry between him and Chuck, I’m not afraid. Jason, Micheal, Pinhead, yes. Leather face, no not scared, just shoot.
Independent Contractor what's so scary is when he uses his fishing knives to kill children.
But he can’t get you now. He’s dead, honey, because Mommy killed him.

@@jakekaufman8302 I was about to say the same thing. And the fact that you can think your awake all you want, he will kill you then
There was a deleted scene here with extra dialogue. Nancy’s mother tells her she had a sibling once. It totally makes sense why the mom is a basket case and an alcoholic. However, they ultimately decided it widened the plot too much with not enough time to expand.
A deleted scene that I felt truly should have been kept in. Along with the cemetery where Marge and Donald are talking saying reminds them of years ago. It also explains why Marge has a drinking problem and her father is emotionally distant.
Who was the nitwit that decided to edit out the part, that Nancy wasn't an only child? Why did they do that to her, and to us?!?!? It would've explained everything!
@@ronaldshank7589well to be fair I've also found that the less that is explained in a movie, the scarier it is.. that's why the very first movie is definitely the scariest by far, and at the time it was made they didn't think any more would be made.
Nancy would not remember she had a sibling? she's been around 4-5 when Freddy was alive it would have been stupid to keep this in the plot.
@@arontamas5639 she's the ultimate final girl of any movie, and Heather Lagenkamp is so excellent here. And she brings just the right amount of sexuality without showing "that much" know what I'm sayin...I think that's an important element to the entire horror story line that makes Nancy totally creepy
The pilot of Freddy’s Nightmares explains his origins pretty close to this. It’s about as close to a prequel that we’re going to get. That’s one of the few things the remake did right…it told you a little about that Freddy’s background and even left the viewer wondering if he was innocent or guilty until the last part of the movie.
Thank you wes craven for giving us this masterpiece of a film.

the one thing that's missing from this scene and i dunno why they cut it out, and there is video proof of this and screenplay of this; is that every kid on elm street is an only child. but they all live in big houses. all of the kids are alone and only childs. it's cause freddy killed all of their siblings. they never address this in any of the movies but that's what it is.
Heather Langenkamp She A Really Did A WonderFul Job Portraying Nancy Thompson & I'm Impressed
I love when Horror stories with concept characters help You create Your own Horror characters and give them background stories!
When it comes to writing Horror, My advice would be is to make it feel like as if this event actually happened... Give it realism, culture, ect., just to make it feel as real as possible!
Of the big three slasher villians its a toss up between Michael and Freddy for who is more evil. Jason is sometimes sympathetic, a traumatized child who kills in revenge for the one person who ever loved him
Michael and Freddy though. Fred is a sadistic child murderer with no remorse who enjoys toying with his victims and Michael is the literal embodiment of pure evil
Jason is a hero compared to them
Jason looser kid.. Freddy big big bad killer
To steal a quote from Bobby Heenan, Freddy's evil can be best described as "enjoying your work.". With the recent capture of the Giglo Beach killer one can look at the traits of this real-life killer and see portions of Fred Krueger. Most serial killers are people who live double lives. Their public life is one of respect by their community; this often reeks of narcissism along with psychopathy.
The Shape has no emotion and is an extreme example of a psychopath. Upon murdering Judith he lost his humanity and simply became a force of destruction.
Freddy’s more evil
Michael was cursed by a Druidic cult, you remember he was shaken when Jamie called him ‘Uncle’, and was crying when he pulled his mask off.
Jason? Granted, watching the only person who loved you die and growing up alone in the wilderness would knock most people off their rocker. People say he wants ‘to be left alone’, but he prowls far outside the old campgrounds and kills locals who’ve lived in the area as long as he has.
Frederick Krueger had a rough upbringing, but even as a kid, he displayed murderous tendencies such as killing the classroom hamster. He could have targeted child abusers like those who harmed him in his youth, but instead, he became a child killer, and out of petty jealousy for children having a better life than he did.
He made his choice to be such a malicious, vindictive, depraved man turned demon, and he has no remorse for it.
So, Freddy is the worst.
For me, this remains one of the few truly frightening movies I have ever seen ( the girl in the body bag was very disturbing ). They turned Freddy into a joke for the sequels. I hope the upcoming remake is being taken more seriously by the producers and will bring the franchise back to its terrifying roots.

Wouldn’t it be sweet to have that glove?!
I’ve made a replica of that knife glove and it takes a few days up to a week to construct and put together. It took me two weeks to make the Black Zodiac execution hood that the killer used at the Lake Berryessa park where he attacked and stabbed Bryan Hartnell and Cecilia Shephard on September 27, 1969
The glove that Marge is holding is the original. Unfortunately, it was stolen after the third movie. That glove is probably worth millions.

They put too much curve on the later models.
The original was perfectly constructed.
He didn't die because if you go by nightmare 6, the "Dream People" gave him the power to invade peoples dreams to exact his revenge on the people who burned him in his boiler room. But if you go by FvJ, when his physical form was gone, the kids still feared him and their "fear" gave him the power to kill them in their dreams.
Clarence Patterson and that's when the fun for Kreguer began to plot his vengeance
Clarence I mean yea but he still was dead after the deal with the dream demons it’s just that now they well in my mind they used his spirit of his burned body in the dream world for Fred because that’s what he last looked like before he died in the real world. Which was caused by the springwood vigilante mob burning of (1968).
More reasons why Freddy vs Jason was pointless horseshit that should have never seen the light of day.
Yea let's keep the item that reminds us of a murdering psycho in our house in the boiler room lol.

You just made it worse, mom.
Yeah Freddy did die! No man can do those things It's common sense. The thing that actually kills them is a very far more scarier being. It's more like an effagy of the man that reveals the dark history of elm street. Not a vengeful ghost.
The dark monotone music in the background as Marge is showing Nancy the knife glove is always going to be dark and cringing 😣😖🫣 emotional moment forever because Wes Craven wrote this script as to how a REAL FELONIOUS MURDEROUS CRIMINAL could definitely pull it off in the real world
BUT ...he can easily be taken out of the dream world and back into the real world by their dreams.but when he dies he just goes back into the dream world.he never dies!
And hell they did make freddy a truly demented and darker booogeyman. i personally loved Jackie Earle Haleys performance :)
When she said its ok now you can sleep. My inside voice was yelling slow are you out cho effin miiind.
Freddy's glove scared me as a kid because it looks like a long legged spider, especially when he creeps the blades around a corner.
And when nobody is wearing it, it looks like a spider playing dead, ready to pounce at you at any time.
Freddy stole my Ipod.....The bastard
Am I the only one who slapped the ham to that mom ?
Mom is quite hot, agreed.
The look of terror when Nancy saw that claw said it all. "He's dead because Mommy killed him". Well Ma'am you might wanna tell Freddy that because I don't think he got the memo.
actually he is, he plays and toys with his victims by letting them run in fear in the woods or cabins, and the suspense eats them alive, then BAM they die a horrible death
This scene was from the very 1st 80's "Nightmare on Elm Street" movie.
I like the clinking of the blades
He's so real. That is what's scary.
Reincarnated. What we get of the demon Freddy Krueger is a fragmant of the Real once living human being. But this is what makes him real.
The demon Freddy is just like a pure soul who was destroyed to the point where he/she became a monster for the rest of their lives.
We can get fragments of that once pure soul. But it's replaced with the hardened essense of it's experiences.
That's what I see when I see the demon Freddy. A monster of human being who is Real.
I stayed until July 15, 1994.
if you pause it at 1:47 you'll see that the glove is a left handed when it's suppose to be a right
I have an interesting theory about that. I believe Freddy had 2, but do to the way he died he left the other in the physical world and could not get it back. Just like when katie took his hat he could not get it back. To me it makes sense because her mother thinks she got him because she found one of his gloves, and does not realize he had a second.
Plus freddy is seen forging a new one at the beginning of the movie. Or he is ambidextrous and wants to switch hands, so he can continue if people asked what hand he killed with.
Sweet!
I Remeber Nightmare 1 I Was A Child In The 90’s I Was Like 14 Years Old In 15 Year’s Ago
And i knew parents have secrets too
It would be interesting if someone mashed it up with that one flashback from the remake!
Nah , use shots from the intro to Freddy v Jason instead . That one even has Robert Englund
So he burned to death but somehow the glove is just fine. Okayyyy...
Well they would've been in evidence most likely and not with him.
Eli Guerrero The leather would've burnt, but during Krueger's arrest they had to of taken it for evidence.
If anyone has read "Fred Krueger is Dead" comic by Nathan Thomas Milliner, Krueger was tied up to his makeshift bed and Marge had his glove and tried to kill him with it hence why it didn't get burnt.
Obviously you’re not a fan of the franchise. The parents caught him off guard, so he wasn’t wearing the glove. When he was alive, he didn’t wear it like a damn ring. He wore it when he was closing in on prey. Let’s get with the program here.
In the script it's actually written that the parents found Freddy in the boiler room drunk, sleeping with the glove by his side. The scene was never filmed, but it's in the script. When Marge shows Nancy the glove, she was supposed to say she "took it to prove he's de-clawed".
Actually Freddys glove is left handed
So how Freddy killed Nancy in Elm 3? Was the scene shot the wrong way? Though his left hand was on her hair?
Why would she keep that? 😂
this guy...
If Krueger wanted revenge on the parents for killing him, why did he go after their kids instead?
Cody Peterson cause they took his child away from him.
An eye for an eye and all that jazz.
Actually they didn't take Maggie away from him, some other people did instead. Krueger wanted revenge on the people that killed him.
+radah77 Thanks for answering but I don't think that's the reason
I know that he was originally intended to be a child molester I'm just saying that's not why Freddy killed the kids instead f the parents
radah77 I'm talking about the original, not the remake. And Craven admitted to removing the child molester aspects from the script and he is never officially confirmed as such in the movie, so you are wrong.
@burmiester1 I thought that when I watched it too. I was about to comment that exact thing but then I saw yours. I would run away from home if my parents told that. But first call em' crazy!!!
ohh well that explains how he got a axe put into his head in friday the 13th part 3 nd survived he did drown at the camp and hes always been a zombie...
He was supposed to be a child diddler too but studio wanted that dropped
They still heavily implied it in almost all the movies the way he acts around teenagers and straight up french kisses a girl in part 4 .
Also Freddy vs Jason gave the biggest hints .
Part 5 even has a newspaper article calling him a child molester
I believe the remake will be a good remake just due to a few things: JEH is a good actor, better than Billy bob Thornton anyday, plus Robert gave JEH his blessings for the role so that's a plus. Plus what else I am interested in is the supposed twist, in which is said is that Kreuger probobly wasn't the child killer, in which he was framed for by the kids and that he is out for revenge, which sounds like a good twist for the remake
Et là le personnage de Nancy comprend comment elle peut se sortir des griffes de Freddy...mais pas le tuer.

In the original movie, before sequels added a bunch of lore, there was no definite answer as to whether Freddy was alive or not.
In fact, the entire point of the first movie was to destroy your ability to distinguish what is real and what is a dream.

@@YChromosome99 That's because that's exactly what they were saying
Looking at this now, “The lawyers got fat and the judge got famous.”. What’s that supposed to mean? Today looking at this realistically, even with that technicality, a judge can over rule and allow him to stay held in contempt. They can easily re sign the warrant. Question is are there witnesses but they’d find his dna on his glove, and the dna of the kids on his glove and that would be enough. Also if he was to come to you in your dreams would be from people having ptsd so bad they’d be dreaming of him which could drive to insanity, hearts attacks, just saying.

Well Jake Kaufman not exactly his dream powers only work and stay strong enough in spring wood not until Freddy’s dead: the final nightmare he made a plan to have a elm street everywhere and him being able to do so is from using his long lost daughter Maggie to have a connection with the outside world to bring it all together. In Which (SPOILER ALERT) he fails in doing so and dies yet again in the real world but this time for good with the dream demons being free from him at last weakling him in the hell where eventually he finds Jason and comes up with a plan by using him in the movie Freddy vs. Jason (2003).

@@jakekaufman8302 I agree with you for the most part; however, there was a part in Freddy’s Dead when Maggie/Katherine was driving with John Doe while he was still trapped in the nightmare. She inches away from breaking the Springwood barrier. How Freddy got to Tracy and Doc in their dreams is after Freddy killed John Doe, he travelled into his daughter’s head, so she took part of him with her to the other town. I think John Doe would have been saved and out of the dream if she wouldn’t stopped driving the van. When John’s body flew out the van, she stopped. It’s like the movie showed us a hint that Freddy couldn’t get to the others outside of Springwood. He needed his daughter to come back so he use her as a host and start killing more people in other towns. Also, he wanted to Jill her for snitching on him about murdering her mother
@@markeithejackson7529 I will have to disagree with you there.
John Doe was going to get killed anyway because he pulled the cord in his dream which of course was a trick by Freddy which caused him to fly headfirst into the van's ceiling straight up into the air as Freddy was exploiting John's fear of heights.
So there was nothing that Maggie or Tracy could do as John fell flat on those spikes that Freddy laid out.
THat's why I'm glad they're remaking it.
This scene annoys me. The factual story line was that freddy before he was burned actually had a family and tried to fit into the community but the truth of his birth and history was exposed to the public and he and his family were totally isolated and his children sttacked.
