Often times it takes a second or third reading of rules and playing through to truly understand some games. When I first learned how to play SPI's Panzer '44, I had to read the rules 3 times just to be able to try to start playing!
So I am a lucky fellow I think, in that these rules did not have that "brick wall" fell to it right away, so was able to play quick enough, even if I would make tons of mistakes. If it was like you Panzer '44, I probably would have put Soldiers away, and missed a great game.
