It was extremely funny seeing the announcements from Paizo (makers of Pathfinder, probably WotC's biggest rival in TTRPGs) where the tagline was "We're Not Gonna Send Pinkertons After You"
Biggest rivals and former ally/student
Paizo and Chaosium (makers of Call of Cthulhu, one of the other big ttrpgs) have been absolutely on point with their announcements since January.
Paizo is also unionized, they're like the polar opposite of WOTC.

Booker DeWitt was also a former Pinkerton agent in Bioshock Infinite, and his past with them is the heavily implied source of his PTSD and depression.
i think the weirdest thing about the whole situation is realizing that Securitas chooses to keep the branding of "the guys who will literally just vigilante murder you in the street for doing union shit" because either it's name recognition and thus free advertising, or because some of the companies looking for security contracts actually have that on their Pros checklist.
I mean it also works as an intimidation tactic. People know who the Pinkertons are and what their history is.
Let's just say the security services industry is full of stupidity, enough so that the Pinkertons look good by comparison in the sense of actually knowing how to do the job asked of them.
It's a "pro" until people start shooting back. And then it's war. The US gov expressely forbids hiring them for damn good reasons.
It's kept due to the history behind it. Reminder, Allen Pinkerton saved Abe Lincoln from a number off assassination attempts and the Pinkertons also served as spies for the Union in the civil war. EVERY brand name, EVERY company with ANY history at all has done some bad shit.

For anyone who wants a little more context about how fucking wild it is that the PINKERTONS of all people were the ones hired for this job:
The Pinkerton Detective Agency was founded in the late 1800's by Allan Pinkerton, who had previously done intelligence work for the Union during the American Civil War. They billed themselves as simply being private detectives and investigators, but in practice were a mercenary organization that were hired by rich industrialists of the Gilded Age to break up Unions and strikes through intimidation, infiltration, and outright violence. Their agents (commonly referred to as "Pinks") were often little more than thugs; and the Agency gained national notoriety following the Homestead Strike of 1892, when a number of armed Pinks were sent to break up a steel mill strike, which resulted in a bloody shootout. From thence forward, the Pinkerton Detective Agency has been synonymous with the violence and callousness of the Robber Barons, and of the exploitation of Labor by the wealthy in general.
Since then the Pinkertons have attempted to whitewash their image by engaging in hisorical revionism and changing their name multiple times. They are currently known as Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations, Inc, and prior to this incident, were hired by Amazon in 2020 and Starbucks in 2022 as part of Union-busting operations.
Every day I'm more and more surprised that Americans don't use their numerous firearms to actually defend themselves against armed terrorists. Like, shit or get off the pot guys.

The Pinkertons would regularly respond to resistance to their intimidation and violence with more violence including mass murder and assassinations.
When the workers still wouldn't give in, the Pinkerton heads and the rich dicks that hired them would call in government and military support via bribes and connections.
It was so bad eventually the government made anti-Pinkerton laws that basically said "if you work for the government, you will not hire or associate with these psychos."
The two bright spot in all of this is that the Pinkertons aren't able to use blatant violence or commit murder anymore and that whenever workers were charged with crimes for defending themselves against Pinkertons and their military support they'd be found not guilty most of the time.

The next set is march of the machines: aftermath while the current is march of the machines, and both sets are almost identical so it could have been sent accidentally.
Other things to note,
He released 3 separate videos over 5 or so days and it wasn’t until all videos were out and everycard in the set was spoiled did they go straight to pinkertons.
Your also right that the pinkertons had no legal right to take the cards or threaten them with jail time.
And pat is right that wotc is on such a “ha ha printer go bbbrrrrrrrr” mindset right now that in the same week this happened they revealed the new secret lair (new art versions of cards you can only buy directly from wotc) and one of the cards was not the finished art, it still had black squiggles instead of a spire in the foreground.
Now secret lairs are supposed to be print to order then never again,
But because that was leading to backlogs of over a year for some they decided to print some in advance.
Now the official wotc policy on damaged goods is they will ship you the replacement free of charge.
But they are in so much of a “printer go brrrrrr” mode that not only will they not ship the fixed version they will instead just put them randomly in other secret lair orders in future.
The artist herself is having to ship out the fixed versions to fans.
So yeah pat most companies look at numbers going up, wotc has upticking numbers tied to their veins.
I've seen someone from the industry make a counter-argument that by the time these boxes reach a Distributor they're covered in so much "DO NOT UNSEAL UNTIL RELEASE DATE" tape it's highly unlikely this was an actual accident.

I haven't looked too deep into this, but I would have slammed the door in their face because they're not fucking cops.
Now if they just showed up with like "hey, you received the wrong package. He's a letter explaining it from Wizards of the Coast", I'd probably just acquiesce and trade them the pack for a correct one. But if they rolled up like "this is a real nice place you've got. What I think is that Hasbro hired the goons initially to go after people for the OGL shit, but once they realized that breaking Runesmith's knees for making 3rd party content for dnd wouldn't go well, they kept them on retainer for things like this.
This was the final nail in the coffin for me on WotC/Hasbro. After they surrendered on the OGL, I thought maybe I would watch the D&D (which was decent, actually) as a message of basically "hey, give us this instead of ruining the OGL."
Now I realize how naive I was. The D&D movie being enjoyable was an accident; they're still a bunch of Neutral Evil maniacs, and I no longer want anything at all to do with them whatsoever.
How was that an accident? Executives doing morally reprehensible things doesn't mean a quality movie can't be produced. There's so many different people involved in these two things.

Boy I wish I could as hopeful about the world as you are. When you go to someone who breaks people's kneecaps when they don't pay up, it's because either no one will give you money otherwise or you need the money for let's say less-than-legal reasons.

IDK about magic, but nobody i know is playing or paying for D&D products anymore that’s for sure. Not since the:
1. OGL fiasco
2. DnD’s next edition being a bad vtt
3. That vtt costing $30 a month (base level, need to pay for modules and rules separately)
4. Replacing the GM with AI
5. no compatibility with ““homebrew”” (literally every game of dnd ever is homebrew lmfao)
The movie did well in the box office but no ttrpg player I know went to see it lol.

EDIT: I fell afoul of the Mandela effect and thought that the film was based on a book.
Checking back to make sure I remembered correctly it appears that I may have had some aspects mixed up with something else, as I thought Harry ended the book by committing a gun suicide on the dock.
I have edited the below to correct some aspects, but I can't be confident that I got it all right.

The book is a nihilistic look at how thin the distinction between a police officer and a violent psychopath actually is, with Harry throwing his badge away at the end, but the film didn't frame it quite the same way and the sequels are even worse in the way that they made him out to be unambiguously heroic.
Dirty Harry being one of the core inspirations for Judge Dredd is kind of telling.

i blame the current marketing freaks they got at the top. the people designing the games are, for the most part, decent people that just want to make game. but let me tell you, the pr and marketing people they have are some of the most corporate hacks i've seen, so yea adds up.

Rockstar Games got in hot water with Securitas, the modern-day rebranding of the Pinkertons, over the depiction of them in RDR2. Apparently being depicted as cruel, psychotic assholes who will murder anyone for money, while accurate, is not exactly good for the brand.

Apparently this isn't even the first time WotC has hired the Pinkertons (or similar private investigator goons) over card leaks. A few years back, some guys stole uncut card sheets from an upcoming set, and WotC released a statement about how they hired investigators to recover the stolen goods, and then previewed every single rare card in the set early, practically. Between that and the, just... plethora of other leaks lately, I don't blame WotC for panicking and trying to get to the bottom of things fast: I *do* , however, blame them for apparently having the god damned Pinkertons on speed dial.
