  • In this video we compare three different shotgun microphones. One of them we've used for years and the other is new and pretty popular in the market right now and the cheaper one is just something to get thrown into the mix for fun, but surprisingly it didn't sound as bad as I thought.

    I'm also quite partial to my AT 897, but the MKE 600 does sound better by a hair. Not that anyone ever complained about my recordings with the 897, so I won't lose any sleep over my choice. Nicely done.

    Great video! We have 3 Sennheiser MKE 600 which we absolutely love. If you are doing this for a business like we are redundancy is key. I would have loved to get the MKH416 but for the same price we got 3 MKE600 and that allows us to do more jobs and have a back up mic if something happens to the main.

    • @absorbproductions
      @absorbproductions  Před rokem +1

      That's very smart! I would take 3 MKE 600's over one MKH416. we're actually working on a comparison video of those 2 microphones right now! And not to spoil the video yet but the MKE600 punches pretty close to the MKH 416!

      @@absorbproductions Love it! In this industry it is easy to focus too much on gear and assuming higher price means better. But knowledge on how to deploy the gear is even more important. For example the most expensive shotgun mic vs entry level and if you do not know how to deploy each mic the more expensive will sound much worse in most circumstances.

    • @absorbproductions
      @absorbproductions  Před rokem +1

      This 10000% true! Knowing the equipment is far more important than how much you need to spend especially when it comes to audio. I've had cheaper back up mics sound way better in some scenarios.

    178 subs (plus me) ? I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't seen it in the comments. I really liked this comparison and that you included such a cheap mic. Sometimes we need these comparisons to see if we can get by with a cheap alternative while saving for the real deal.

    You could have tried AT875r which is more sensitive than the MKE600 and sounds alot more natural. The MKE600 which I liked out of the bunch here sounded too midrangy and towards the harsh spectrum. The AT875r sounds natural and you wouldn't need to eq unlike the AT897

      I'm so glad I saw your comment. I've been using the AT875R for voice over for two years, do love it for my voice, and was venturing out for better possible alternatives below $900. The Synco D2, now my back up, wasn't it. So far, it looks like my original choice wins.

    hi there sir. I'm a fan of the audio technica AT897. been waiting for a very good review, that can really convince me, before I purchase. my question to you is, what was that noise in the audio? its like an AC unit sound, a fan, or something. I need to be sure, before I blame the microphones

    • @thecreativetalk
      @thecreativetalk Před 2 lety

      To be honest I am not entirely sure what that sound is. I had the ac off, so it may have been my pc but i think it was only coming from the HTDZ mic which could have been some defect in it.

    • @absorbproductions

    in the bluetooth speaker test all 3 mics sounded bad, not really a good test, not a real reference, the bluetooth spaker just doesnt sound good to begin with, just ask a friend to talk into the mics and it would be much fair.

    • @absorbproductions
      @absorbproductions  Před 3 měsíci

      The whole video was recorded on both mics of me switching back and forth, that specific test was just to show if there was an consistency's in the microphones not so much an example of how a voice would sound.

    what would you say exactly made you choose the MKE600? I'm personnaly looking for a mic that's not too bassy and can handle outdoor recording. I had the impression the AT had a bit more clarity/less overwhelming bass. What do you think? Am I mistaken?

    • @absorbproductions
      @absorbproductions  Před rokem +2

      So the At897 definitely has more of a flat sound but the Sennheiser has a more full sound and overall a cleaner sound, I wouldn't say it's "bassy" but I think it's a better mic mainly because it's a more sensitive mic with low self noise. Both are great but that AT897 requires a lot of preamp gain to get the same levels. I personally do not like a mic that's too bassy myself which is why I don't use any of rodes microphones.

      @@thecreativetalk and compare to the at897. I think the at897 under appreciated as an entry level shotgun mic. Since it is old, it never gets compared to the newer shotgun mics. The problem using a recorded conversation, is that the mics and processing your used in the recording will alter the sound of the mics you are testing. Who knows if its the sound quality of the recording, the mics you used, etc or the mics you are testing.
