Your video brought tears to my eyes because I wished for a family like yours. I was adopted from a Korean orphanage, but did not have a happy ending like your little one. The family that adopted me, there wasn't screening, no home visit, no background check, and I was tormented, abused in every way and by the time I was 7 I would pray for death. I am now in the process of starting an organization for adoptees who are like me. Thank you for treating her so well and keeping her culture too.

Sondra Anderson That is a real bummer. My wife and I both live in HK (40 years combined) and we adopted a Korean child locally. He was born to a young Korean expat. Both my wife and I speak Korean. He's in Korea regularly and goes to Korean International School every Saturday and one on one every Tuesday. He is loved as is his Jewish Korean Hong Kong-born identity.
I'm also a member of a HK Adoption Group which is made up primarily of American couples looking to bring children with special needs into their homes. These (usually older) kids are in an orphanage. There appears to be an amazing amount of love and compassion in these people as well.
I know this doesn't diminish your hurt, but I do think things have changed with regards to background checks and cultural sensitivity. HK, for example, will first and foremost place children within the same ethnicity. I think that's standard practice now. I also think we've progressed to a place where most people would respect - or at least consider - the birth culture of a child. The parents in that group certainly do. But, truly, the 'fix' will come when adoption in Asia is no longer seen as taboo.
I hope you find peace in your journey.

Her English is just about fluent. She is very clever, nothing we did, just genetically very smart. She caught on so quickly that after 4 months of being home her Pre K teacher said she was ahead of most of the English born children in class.
Maybe I will do a video where I ask her questions, it would blow people away at how fast she mastered the language.

Kinda the sweetspot for Korean adoptions. Korea had put in stringent regulations about 10 years prior, but slowly started to enforce them a bit more. In 2011-12 is when they dropped the hammer.
Generally speaking, all of her paperwork should be good. No funny business. Even today, this couple probably would qualify since the wife is Korean.
    International adoptions:
    2001: 2400
    2007: 1300
    2012: 236
(moved a bit higher afterwards, then slide again.)
    2013: 535
    2022: 142
The weird part is why even the domestic adoptions slide. I'm guessing there was some abuse issues and they had to tighten up regulations. Domestic adoptions went from 1700 to 180.

@matthewcyahoo ya never know- I have friends my age who arent interested in korean culture and their 20-23....but I also know other adoptees who waited til they were in their 30s-40s to find their parents. I guess it depends on the child. I know I am really eager to find my birth mom. It may be different for you because ur children have a korean mother...I have two caucasian parents and my eagerness to get in touch with my korean roots led me to searching for my birth mom.

Thats the most awsome part! I feel sorry for kids whos parents do not teach their language and keep them strangers from a history they should know. I even met a Korean lady she was 27 at the time and her parents never taught her how to eat with chopsticks. OH COME ON NOW! Then again met a 32 year old Korean adoptee whos white mom pulled her away from me when I was speaking korean to her. She had the biggest smile on her face until pulled away. VERY RUDE!

So sorry, but you are wrong. Yes, my Korean is bad but both children are bi lingual and speak Korean just as well as they speak English. Their Mother speaks only Korean in the house. Please don't feel sad for us, we are a happy family and are not trolling You Tube videos all day making denigrating comments like you..

That is my same goal. I really want to adopt from Korea. I read and write in Korean fluently and know the language and culture, so I think that would maybe help. :)
