- August can be a tough time of year for most fishing. It's hot, the bite windows are smaller and you have to adjust to new conditions all the time. This video is a good starting point for when you get to Smith Mountain Lake during the dog days of summer.

thanks for the tips for SML! Im here all week and marking fish in the 20 ft depth range. They drew the water down two feet during this fourth of July week for some reason... Ive not been hooking any bass on the drop shot creature baits, will switch up to the jig. Im getting smoked by big panfish everywhere I go, which is fun but would love some bass!
Hey paddle, thanks for watching. There is still a top water bite as well. Throwing little walking baits. Make sure you’re Fishing The drop shot super slow.
Enjoyed it man! Thanks for sharing! I surely miss that lake!!
One of the best on the east coast brother!
Always killer vids!!!! 👊🏻
Thanks bro!
Thank you brother. Going to put to use this weekend on the oak grove side of the lake. 🙌🏻
Get after man hope it helps. Tight lines 🤘🏻
I sympathize with the Carolina Rig 🥴🥴🥴 My least favorite setup for me hooking fish smh.
Great content as usual!!
That's for the info .... can use all the help I can get
Sure thing!
Just the video I needed I’m going to smyth mountain lake on the 15th
Good luck!
@@billy_kohlsfishing thank you I will probably be posting what I catch on my Instagram

Thanks for the video, very helpful for me as I will be visiting SML over Labor Day week. Expect it will still be similar summer like conditions at that point. I plan to use lots of jigs and C rigs. Question: can I have success fishing the same areas with deep diving crankbaits?
Hey Will you ever been here? Yea you could crank but the dragging bite is better that time of year. We get a good crank bite like mid October- late November.
@@billy_kohlsfishing hey thanks for the reply! I have fished SML before but it was late may so the bite was very different. I will definitely take a lot of the advice in this video to heart and will report back with results! Thanks for the content man will def continue to follow for SML specific tips
@@willberger3349 thanks
Hey man new to this lake and I’m just fishing from the shore finding it a little hard only have found 3 but the one was 6lb I got yesterday big ole largemouth just hard to even find places I can fish from shore
Hey Kevin. A 6lber from the bank in August is awesome! This lakes a little hard to learn from the bank since you only have a few spots to fish, but the bass will be moving shallow soon and you should start catching more. Check out my monthly fishing report on www.SmithMountainlakefishing.com for some bait ideas.
@@billy_kohlsfishing definitely gonna check it out I was gonna head out in a little bit here to go at it again need to get on a boat out here though
@@billy_kohlsfishing also I was wondering for your rates is it minimum 2 people or would I be able to come out alone
@@kevinoneill1696 alone is all good. Rates are $375 for a half day and $475 for a full day. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Try shortening your leader on the c rig
Will do thanks!
Where is this lake located?
Southwest Virginia near Lynchburg and Roanoke VA.
Do you think livescope is a must have for tournament fishing now?
Yes 1000% don’t get me wrong a dude can beat the bank and catch fish year around but I’ve lost count of the number of tournament kickers I’ve caught that were single bass swimming outside of structure that I’ve thrown to and caught. 5-7 lbers just roaming around.
Appreciate the response, I will be fishing in college next year and do well on drop shot on Smith Mountain, but per usual have to work through so many dinks. Will have to take a look into getting livescope set up.
@@ethanpainter2970 DS + livescope is deadly man. What school you fishing with?
Patrick and Henry community college in Martinsville is starting a team this year, wanted to give it a shot and hopefully transfer out after two years and join another team. I was looking to upgrade boats a few weeks ago and actually had messaged one of your buddies about his. I picked one up before I got to look at his, but he was going to actually bring it down here for you to show me.
Glad you got one. Good luck in the season I’m sure I’ll see you out on the water 🤘🏻
You dont gotta yank the fish clear out the water with your hookset, sharp hooks my friend
They don't stand a chance much bro!
