  • A talk about superhero comic book characters, why things need to change but only to a certain point. And when as a publisher should change happen or should it be pulled away. Why it makes sense not to change things much.
And how the only lasting change that will happen is if the makers own the characters and book. Otherwise if a corporation own it, their best interest is to not make it change or last.

Personally.... I'm of the opinion that we dont need heroes to "change" or "develop" but to have consistent stories that highlight them at their best.
Give a lot if these characters a good status quo and decent writers.....most folks would be good.
Continuity and development are good....but if the base stories are trash....do they matter?

Well today's creators see change as kill a character and then months later bring them back. Attention getting topics that hold no value long term. They have dropped good storytelling for activism.

@@rfppublishing True. And i feel that honestly comicbook characters have three options.
periodic reboots where the main canon is refreshed for a new era of fans, Treat each creative team as a seperate incarnation of the character, i.e. Dan slott's spiderman work would be considered a different universe from Nick Spencer's work. Or simply go classic archie, have a loose continuity with episodic plots.

Well problem with those is the American system since the Golden Age continues the stories of the previous team. It is all one long standing, supposed to be cohesive universe. As for a reboot, Marvel never did that company wide like DC did. If they did maybe old time Marvel fans would walk away. But to the new reboot it is nearly impossible to believe any team will do a better job than the 1960s creators did. And they will always be the real origin stories to fans.
Or like I mention at some point many readers see the game for what it is, appreciate what they read, realize the comics are no longer for them and walk away. Either drop comic buying regular monthly books, go to other companies, or make your own stuff.

I honestly perfer american comics over mangas. Sure mangas sometimes have a faster pace and sometimes better charcther devolpment (sorry if i spelled wrong.) But comics give me more interest. Thats just my opinion.

or if you kill off a character you didn't exist make a statement that tells the world this story and ending is not of the original creator and if another comes up with another story or ending in another story they won't fell any type of way about it

If you want to make a change create another line. The reason I don't like many characters is they don't change. A definitive beginning and end is what would make every character special, and it is one of the reasons I don't like some of the most popular characters because they don't change (spider man is the same look and age in 95% of his stories) and there is no reason given for why the character has remained the same. I don't like Spider-Man for that reason (hes always been a teen) and want to know why he doesn't have a 3rd of his stories as a mid life and a 3rd as an older and now old character. If you give me a reason (he takes life energy from those he webs) why he is still young that I could read him all day, but being spiders don't live very long Peter Parker should be old as dirt now.

See you are thinking real world. But you are not thinking corporate. These are IP properties. Think of Superheroes like Bugs Bunny.
You don't want them to really age. Because while an aging Spider-Man might appeal to you.
What of futurre generations to market the chracter to? Or future young people? They would be turned off a character so old. They want someone young to relate to.
This is why the main one of these heroes don't age but you get other timeline variants that are different ages in series.
That's what Old Man Logan is for example.
Bottom line if corporations actually did age heroes in a real sense. They would be hurting the long term potential of making money.
Like I said think of superheroes no different then the Looney Tunes characters. It really is the same thing. That is real world talk. Not fictional talk of why they don't really age characters.
Plus they are meant to appeal to generations of fans. Not just you or me.
And honestly like I explained in another video, as you get older it's time to walk away and stop buying. You outgrow those comics made now.
And like I video said here the only way to age characters like you want is if a creator owns their work. It's what Larsen did. And it is what Kirkman did as well. They create change that lasts because they own it.

@@rfppublishing U can always create new characters. I love stories of old, and some of my favorite characters (not all comic books) are from days of old, and I like reading and collecting them as much as new characters. And I think many do. Marvel and D.C. claim to have over 5,000 characters and are always coming up with new ones. They should have no problems creating new characters for new and old readers to love, but instead seam to be using tactics (countless stories and over saturation of variant covers for each story) to saturate the market, making it hard for others creations to have a chance.

You really CANNOT create new characters. At least in a corporate sense. Icons 50 or even 80 plus years old are one of a kind proven sales. How many new characters created actually last long term? And no, someone else picking up the mantle and costume is a foolish idea. There is only one real Batman, Superman and all the others.
There is no replacing these icons. And there never will be.
Yeah most those 5000 are supporting characters and people who can never sell a book on there own.
Plus why today would any creator give their new original characters to Marvel or to DC? That is just foolish.
Own it yourself or go to Image and own it. Which solves your problem.
Create a new character who you can control the destiny of and not a corporation.
It's also a topic might need to talk on again where Marvel and also DC will not grow anymore cause no one is creating dozens of new characters for them which will matter.
Why give it to a corporation? Just own it yourself.

    • @rfppublishing

Creators today don't need the big two to survive. Crowd funding, image and even Ghost Machine prove the way forward is owning your work. And not giving it to the big two corporations to get rich off your ideas.

@@rfppublishing Marvel and D.C. purposly sabatage many characters with poorly illustrated and written stories so they can tell you they won't sell, to keep their legacy characters afloat. They do it not just with comics, but with shows and movies also. And besides create bad stories for their normal heroes they also have projetcs they know need to be propped up and instead of doing so throw projects out that need to be set up by other projetcs that would allow them to sell. Bat-Woman would sell if they had made a Bat Family show right with a handful of seasons, and so would the other Bat Family members, but Batwoman show shouldn't have been second or even 3rd to have a show. Harley Quinn was a Bust because her movie was supposed to be a Gotham Sirens vs Bird of Prey movie that got major hype from many for a month and then was replaced by HQ.... they were going to introduce a dozen new characters or so in one film and I know many were exited by that news. What they got was a horrible movie of a character we were told was popular but really wasn't. HQ is garbage and Punchline is a far better character at her core (actually a great character) and they have not taken advantage of that at all.

how can you say Japan has the balls to end a series or character but then get mad when American writers end them. some of them have to go and stay gone. I wish Jean was gone, she is a glass canon and a walking plot device to do whatever the writer felt like. same with scarlet which.

    • @rfppublishing
      @rfppublishing  Před 7 měsíci +2

Because it is two different things. The ACTUAL CREATORS of the Japanese series end it. That is their right. While I view it in America unless you created THE CHARACTER. You have no right to forever end a character you never made. Or alter it drastically forever. That is the difference. At least how I see it.
Jean was created by Stan and Jack never Claremont or Byrne. So who are they to take an original X-man off the table? So no one can ever use it after. So forty plus years later Jean can never return because a creative team took her off the table forever. If they made their own character and ended it, that would be their right.
But on a commercial sense Jean and others are IP properties and you never end a character you can make money off. You can bet if the corporations know a character is worth money, it will never be off the table forever.
Which is why as a reader, you outgrow this stuff and walk away. Because you wise up and know the game will never end. Or enjoy it for what is it. Or turn to independents or make your own stuff.
