- For tonight, I retell you the story of Beowulf, the famous Anglo-Saxon epic poem put in writing in Old English at the turn of the Second Millenium but probably older. Beyond the story itself, what does Beowulf tells us of its time, the population of England, the emergence of the English language, or the society that produced it? And what was its influence on modern Fantasy, starting with the work of JRR Tolkien?

This is how I prefer to learn about Beowulf vs sitting in a hard plastic chair, at desk with the brightest yet dullest lights illuminating the room, in a classroom whose thermostat is set to arctic.

Thank you for this!! I studied Beowulf and the Old English language extensively as part of my degree in English Literature, concentrating on Medieval Literature. As I've learned more about Norse mythology, it's so interesting to see how elements of that as well as broader European mythologies appear in the manuscript. What I wouldn't give to have other manuscripts of the Beowulf legend to see how contemporaries viewed the story and how it changed over time!

to anyone looking to read a wonderful book relating to Beowulf, i recommend the novel Grendel by John Gardener!! it's got philosophical themes, emotional themes, and adds a load of reason to Grendel's actions!! :))

Fun fact, theirs a missing page of the legend of Beowulf that was destroyed in a fire in Ireland. But there are some archeological evidence of that missing page of the story.

Do you have ads now? I don’t mind them at the start of a video but they have sporadically appeared at the end and I just had one day in the middle of the video
There should not be any in the middle, unless you refresh the video. For the ones at the beginning and (sometimes) at the end, I am sorry. A few months ago CZcams made it impossible to publish videos without turning on ads. So I can no longer avoid them, except on all the videos before novembre 2023 that could retain their legacy settings and are still without ads.
@@TheFrenchWhispererASMR I refresh the video because I found it stops the ads at the end, I knew a day would come when complications were would arise.
BS of CZcams, unfair that you can’t choose where ads appear considering asmr creators should have them at the start. CZcams and the creator both win this way.
