  • Why does the BRS/WWC Hybrid Method work so well on the Red Sea E-170, but still continues to be a challenge for the 750XXL? Even though we followed a similar approach to the Hybrid Method for both tanks both have pretty significant differences not just in equipment, but also in their levels of success. Find out today what those differences are and what we might change on the 750XXL to kick it's success into high gear!

    Feeding Aminos on the hour is not optimal according to the Doc that runs the Credible Coral Lab - There's a Reef New Network Episode with him and he said daily was better as you need to get the concentration up in the water so the corals will be more actively feeding (or something similar). I remember he said feeding daily was better for this...
    But I would think feeding particular matter on the hour is a good idea with filter roller - Triton runs without socks for a reason I feel - I'd definitely like BRS to look into this more ;)

    I had a huge problem with aptasia in my reefer 525xl i just recently used the franks F aptasia and it worked wonders! i used that in combination with a copperband butterfly fish and now its all gone. I tried two different file fish and neither one wanted to eat it they just nipped at my corals so i took them out and then tried a bunch of the nudi and they didnt seem to work either. wish i would have found that f aptasia first and went with the copperband. I do have a question about lighting. will there be a investigates on the red sea 90 lights like the rest of the lights you guys have been doing to give the best placement and levels to get the best results?

    I started up a Reef Savvy 75 gal just shy of 15 month ago. It was a bare-bottom setup with a decent amount of reefsaver base rock, 2 bio blocks and a gallon of MarinePure bioballs. I (over)dosed bacteria from 3 different brands in the beginning and introduced 6 fish. Over this last year it has had bacterial bloom after bacterial bloom. Starter corals went in and started growing, then crashed. Rinse and repeat. It only just stabilized within the last 2 months. This is by far the longest it's ever taken to get a tank coral ready for me. The good news is that now I have a completely pest free tank that I can use to seed live rock for the next time I decide to start a bare-bottom tank. If you're starting a tank for the first time I would recommend either finding a clean source for seed live rock if you're going bare-bottom or using sand. My 2 cents.

      Ant I might be in for a similar outcome unfortunately. I have a bare bottom tank that I started with dry rock. I am only 5 months in and on my 4th bacterial bloom. After hearing your experience, it makes me nervous about purchasing corals...

    • @dismantlingamy
      @dismantlingamy Před 3 lety

      @@jasonkearns3330 I wouldn't purchase anything expensive and if you have a few reefer buddies that could spare a cheapo frag or two I'd stick some of those in. During the first 10 or so month I didn't get any algae but I got this weird like fluffy crud stuck all over the rock. I would blow it off and it would grow back in a couple of weeks. Looking back I'm sure it's because I had the lights on, but again, I had never experience such a long cycle and thought it was OK to turn them on when I did. Only advice I can give is to wait until you have algae and I don't mean coralline, just regular ole nasty algae. Once I started seeing it my corals stabilized and started growing. Don't give up, bud :)

    Can’t say much, because I have aptashia in my tank from buying calerpa at a frag meet, but always thought that when I see coralline algae start to show, it’s a good thing that ur tank is maturing, scraping it off from another tank is cheating ur self, now look what happened , never had any problem going bare bottom and using dry rock, it’s a marathon not a sprint!

    Those Nudibranch's destroyed my Aptasia. It took about 2 months for them to start breeding full-force and it took less than a month after that but then, no more aptasia. That said, I didn't have anything in my tank that would eat the Nudibranchs. Mine only came out at night which makes me think the wrasses shouldn't get at too many of them.

  • @lisafoster4468

    I figured a controller was too expensive...but then I realized that so is losing a tank full of coral and pets. I'm biting the bullet and getting one. All but one time I've had a catastrophic tank crash, be it saltwater or otherwise, such monitoring would have allowed me to save them all. When you mentioned that the Apex saves a tank in your office about once every thirty days, and adding what you've said about it now...yeah.

    So what is the break down in cost of calcium reactor vs 2part, ignoring cost of equipment? Trying to do the math on this is a bit tough, just looking at the calcium part of things (yeah I know they should be called alkalinity reactors), seems that by mass about 40% of calcium carbonate is calcium, and for 2 part about 36% is calcium in calcium chloride. And looking at the cost of reactor media both are somewhat comparable to each other if you don't go with a fancy "reef brand" of stuff like something that rhyme with RightSmell :) and if you do break it down CostCo baking soda wins dollar for dollar and is considerably cheaper than BRS Phrama grade... also considering most will replace calcium media before it's all used up (before mush) some of that weight does get "wasted".
    Either way I've seen articles on it, they all claim it, and some even put out numbers but never any values to back it up. One article at diesyst.com reef.diesyst.com/crarticle/crarticle.htm has a neat graph, but seems to suggest on a 120g tank a yearly cost of $90 per 1 dKh need for 2 part, and that absolutely blows my mind, because even BRS Pharma stuff in calcium and alkalinity will run you $200 for 35lbs of each, and there's no way in hell you're using half of that in a year.
