    Its funny how the Petronas Twins started all the feuds after beating Sears Tower in the 90's, and now KL118 is the last megatall under construction. Kuala Lumpur really plays a huge role in skyscraper's race.

    I kinda realised that the Merdeka tower went for “quality than quantity”. They could have spent all the money to make it taller than Burj Khalifa. Instead they spent all the money making its infrastructure so unique and making the building sturdy/safe for the coming future. The merdeka tower look like a diamond and sure will be the gem of Malaysia

      Why though? Skyscrapers are money pits, they hardly, if ever recoup their initial investement, they contribute significantly to carbon emissions in their construction, operation and maintenance, they cater to no need other than self aggrandizement and vanity.

      I do expect that there will be new megatall skyscrapers in the future, maybe not within the next decade (or even couple of decades), but it’s not human nature to say “we’ve reached a good point, let’s just leave it at that” there will always be someone innovating new materials, new construction methods and other innovations that at some point will make it economically viable to build even bigger.

      @@Mingzhoulee not practically giant, but different shaped, the wtc is squared, Petronas is kinda like a star shape like the star on the Malaysian flag. The petronas have a total height of 423 metres. Wtc has total height of 417 metres. Also speaking from a Malaysian but a Chinese Malaysian.

    The building is so huge the Spire on top of it is a building itself for an observation deck. It's not just a simple spire to increase its height.

      It's also has meaning! The design itself showing how Tunku Abdul Rahman when he declare independent of Malaysia. The spire is showing his hand raising up while he declare it. In short the design show how he declare independent. The design is like that because it's located next to where Malaysia had it independent which is 'Stadium Merdeka'. That's why the name is 'Merdeka' PNB 118. Sorry for interrupted, it's already shown in the video but I just want to tell that the spire is its design and not just for observation deck or increase its height.😊

    Maybe about 700+ tall. The design has been published recently.

    Its crazy. I remember visiting Kuala Lumpur with my Dad when i was a child, when the Petronas Towers were the highest buildings in the world. And today, they're not even the highest in the city.

      What? You're incorrect. Petronas Twin Towers is still the tallest building in the city at the moment. That is, until Merdeka 118 gets completed in probably mid 2023 at latest. But even by then, petronas twin towers will still be the second tallest in all of Malaysia.

    Pnb118's Spire is useable space as an observation deck. Thus, PNB's height without spire is 515m and Burj Khalifa's height without spire is 585m. So basically they are 70m different without spire.

      @@gdgd5194 for a more stable nation like Malaysia, the building of its new economic/cultural center is beneficial, as it not only creates jobs at this period, which can be important for many people suffering from concerns of future savings. After partially constructed, it would attract more business opportunities and transactions, which benefits all related industries who want the market to flow so that they can feed themselves and their employees, who in turns can afford more things to a better life. Such mechanism is what I understand as stimulate economic growth, and is suitable for Malaysia.

      i used to think Malaysia was a poorer country but after the skyline images it looks rich, i would go but idk how many people there know english as their second language, making it hard for me to communicate

    I think one of the things also pushing away from megatalls is the realisation that space is better utilised when you develop medium height buildings in a dense urban network. Such tall buildings push everything into one area and make getting people in and out of it more difficult.

      @@jackz4713 thanks. I certainly will! People were very friendly to me (I'm almost 2 meters tall and they used to call me "Petronas"). I love the mix of modernity and jungle in Kuala Lumpur. And I still have to visit the beautiful beaches in the country.

    Indeed. KL 118 could be the last mega tall skyscraper in the world and in Malaysia. However, don't forget there still still many super tall skyscrapers are currently under construction in Malaysia. These are Signature Tower from BBCC, Oxley Towers, Fairmont Hotels, 8 conlays, Towers alongside from the KL118 construction site & TRX financial district construction site.

    The spire was the one of public attraction. Where visitors van walk up to 600m+ above to get inside and see those skyview of Kuala Lumpur

    Fantastic video, really love seeing and hearing about these mega tall structures. There's something very sci-fi about it the scale and ambition with these structures, personally I think until there is some great leap forward with materials or technology these types of builds will continue to be rare. Though still very cool to look at.
