  • Why is the universe the way it is? How did life begin? And how might it end? Our next guest has spent his life in search of the answers. Neil deGrasse Tyson is an astrophysicist, author and popular science communicator. His new book, "Cosmic Queries," was co-authored with physicist James Trefil. Tyson joins our Walter Isaacson to discuss the book and what drives his thirst to explore the really big questions of the universe.

Absolutely fascinating. What has always blown my mind is how we have failed to realize how rare we are in the universe and therefore, a species imperative to care for each other. We are merely a blimp in time. How amazing is that? Causes me to be humble.

What a great comment! I think about how in olden days we just assumed that we were special and at the center of the universe. Then as we came to understand the universe around us we saw that we were actually so small in the grand spectrum of things. Now as we realize that the galaxy does not seem to be teaming with life, we are returning to the understanding that we might just be very special indeed, and to quote you to yourself, there is a ‘species imperative to care for each other’. The journey to understanding continues!

@@SuperManning11 There are more suns (stars) in the universe than there are grains of sand on earth. Each of those suns has several planets. So the likelihood of us being rare is extremely low

@@hmq9052 Agreed. I suppose I was speaking poetically in the sense that it seems unlikely at this point in time that a StarTrek-like universe of other intelligent aliens on every other star system that we encounter will be interacting with us on a regular basis in our immediate future. I was also emphasizing the gist of the original comment that this provides a very good reason (among many) to care for one another as a species. Perhaps a more bleak way of saying this would simply be to reiterate the fact that no one is going to save us from ourselves so we’d better start treating one another and our planet with more care. That’s all

I went to Catholic school from kindergartener to 8th grade, that was a no no. So, I was punished for asking any such questions. My response was usually, 'if your faith is so strong, why be threatened by questions'. The administration didn't appreciate that either. Still, I continued to constantly ask questions. I wrote many papers voicing hypothesis, theories, etc. I was *always* in trouble for this. Thankfully, beginning in 6th grade, I got an amazing science teacher. He supported my curiosity & questions, no matter how 'wild' or 'sacrilegious', I was told they were previously. He changed my life in so many ways, I'll be forever grateful...
