- In this week’s episode of “Cocktails with a Curator,” Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator Xavier F. Salomon delves into the significance of a deceptively simple teapot designed by Johann Friedrich Böttger and given to the Frick by the great German-born collector Henry H. Arnhold (1921-2018). Enjoy a Saxon cocktail while exploring the complicated history behind Böttger’s quest to discover the formula for porcelain in a clifftop fortress outside Dresden in the early 18th century.

FEATURED COCKTAIL: Saxon (white rum, lime juice, grenadine syrup, orange peel); the mocktail is pomegranate juice and lime juice, garnished with mint. For the complete recipes, visit Frick.org/cocktails.
No one can tell a story better than Xavier! Brilliant piece of work!
Loved this. Makes one appreciate every little thing: porcelain, tea, coffee, chocolate...
The stories behind the artwork and objects are fascinating. An object like the teapot is something that I would ordinarily pass by without so much as a glance. Thank you for helping me come to la better understanding of the works, not only at the Frick, but at other collections.
I think the thing that amazes me most about this series of videos is the depth and breath of the scholarship with which it has been wrought. How do you all have command of so many amazing facts? Breathtaking! Each one of these videos is a veritable Russian novel of unexpected detail, plot twists and endless unpronounceable character names to track. What viewers THINK we might be getting into bears no resemblance whatsoever to the delicious tale that in the end we are presented with. I am in awe.
I totally agree! By the way, I sometimes select the closed captions [CC] so I can see how those unpronounceable names are spelled.
Enjoyed the video. When the children left and we changed the locks on the doors, my wife bought a place setting for 8 of Dresden Porcelain. While nothing like the pot; we use it every day for just the two of us.
And yes! The food tastes so much better.
As a potter this was a wonderful history - as an art lover, this was love. Thank you again, Xavier!
Thank you Xavier, another wonderful 20 minutes of art history enrichment. You are a pleasure to hear!
Thank you again and again Mr.Salomon what a pleasure to hear you, please keep on! Bless you!!!
Fascinating history of the teapot. Thank you!
What a captivating story, that motivates us to learn more. Thanks a lot!
Hello from Sacramento, CA, where I’m part of the Crocker Art Museum Docent 20-21 class. It was suggested we watch this, which I will watch again...I enjoyed the detail that much. I also subscribed to the Frick for more informative and fascinating art tours.
Traveling and getting educated while in quarantine thanks to Mr Salomon has been a fantastic experience. I live in Puerto Rico and receive these wonderful lectures thanks to a friend in NYC who has been so kind as to share them with me. I have visited the museum many times when I lived in NY and look forward to returning someday soon. Please know that your efforts are most appreciated. AND please do visit Egypt one day. It is a most fascinating country.
As a potter, I loved this. Thank you!
Hello from New York I love these evenings. So rich and well informed. I always look forward to them.Thank you.
Watching from Auckland New Zealand. Saturday morning here, the best way to start the day. Thank you Xavier1
Grazie per questa bellissima iniziativa che ci permette di godere un patrimonio unico al mondo reso ancora più interessante dai fantastici racconti dei curatori.
Having visited Dresden and Meissen I really enjoyed your account of the discovery of porcelain and especially the Dragoon vases. You brought back wonderful memories - if only I could return, and revisit the Frick too with fresh eyes. A big thank you. Please keep relating these wonderful art histories.
Love Mr Salomon's pronunciation; what it is to be a polyglot! Fantastic video, thank you.
That was fantastic! So much one doesn't know about the things we take for granted! I hope Bottger achieved some level of freedom and happiness 😊!
👏🏻👏🏻 Bravo, Xavier
What a lovely exposure to the history of porcelain. Thank you Xavier!
What a wonderful story! Thanks so much once again
Thanks! I didn't know about the humble red porcelain. Its beautiful!
Thank you. Kept looking for the Kitty.
So glad to be here. From Bay Head, New Jersey
Quite wonderful. I was transported by the history of porcelain in the west.
Excellent ! Congratulations from Argentina
Fascinating story. I like very much these 'cocktails'. Thank you!
Thank you to the Frick once again for an informative and well researched video. This information is such a wonderful service and I look forward to visiting the Frick Collection soon!
Salomon creatively transformed a simple reddish brown teapot into an exotic creature. I say creature because this discussion infuses life into this object. And to think I almost skipped this lecture thinking, in error, that it might be dull. It was the best yet.
Thank you once again. Love from Italy.
Shades of Rumplestiltskin, and another delightful sojourn with Xavier. Thank you.
That was an amazing half-an-hour. We were going to Dresden and then the Lockdown stopped us, however, we shall now go armed with all the information about early Porcelain. Thank you for this and for the whole series.
Another amazing talk, filled with history and art
Excellent video.Informative & interesting.Porcelain history amazing. Pl continue with this lovely programme. Love The Frick Collections
Thanks to Solomon Xavier for his efforts to bring it to us.
From Thailand, thank you for this.
You are a great guide, I wish you had been there when I visited Dresden!
Enjoyed the video.
There is an incredible book that was recommended by Xavier that I purchased on this very subject it is The Arcanum The Extraordinary True Story by Janet Gleeson. Good prose and well researched, worth your time. I found mine on Amazon.
Lee Kempter , Yes I also read the book” The Arcanum”. An excellent history, well written.
