  • In this video I'll take a look at the Glow EZ Lock 20-inch Quick Ball Lantern Softbox... with Deflection Disc. It's a mouthful for sure - and a surprisingly versatile modifier.

    I'm a CheetahStand modifier guy, and have many of their modifiers. But I've never really given much attention to their lantern. Today I got curious about how to use it, because not only have I never used one, I've never seen anyone else use one either! Thank you for this quick video. It gives me a better understanding on when this little modifier could come in handy--just what I was looking for!

      My first exposure to lanterns - other than the paper ones I used to use - was a CheetahStand. It's good stuff.
      I'm working on some new content that's shot in my shop and I'm trying to incorporate the Glow, EZ Lock, 20 Inch, Quick Ball, Lantern, Soft Box... with Deflection Disc. It definitely takes some trial and error to maximize its potential, but I think it's worth the effort.
      Glad you liked the video, thanks for watching.

    Thanks for another great video. I have a similar product by Fotodiox. It is their 32" Lantern Softbox Globe. They make a 20" and a 26" as well. They do not have a deflection disk. I have been using it as a fill light for studio work and, have been really pleased with the results. It is mounted on a Alien Bees AB1600.

      Thanks for the kind words.
      Honestly, I could tell very little difference with the disc adjustments. Again, I was using this with a relatively weak light source (compared to a strobe).
      It was interesting to see this type of modifier being used in a BTS video for Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel". In almost every shot where people were walking down a hallway or something, there was one 'walking' with them right next to the mic boom. Pretty cool.

      @glennb1374 Před 3 lety +1

      @@MattSpaugh I watched the BTS video that you mentioned. I would think that the lantern light was used as a way to provide a constant, near shadow free light source on the actors as the progressed through the scene. A good way to eliminate/offset the ambient light.

    Any recommendation on which size to pick? I was thinking it might be nice to use as a room light at events in like medium size room or maybe even a family shoot at the beach where even with an assistant, setting up more than one light is almost impossible. Just not sure if I should go for the smaller, medium or larger and how hard they are to handle.

    • @MattSpaugh
      @MattSpaugh  Před 2 lety +1

      "Medium sized room" is a kinda relative term but I'll say that the 20" with a 120-D type light in it will easily cover 4-500 square feet with soft, ambient light.
      I don't know that the size of the modifier would matter as much as the amount of light you'll need to push through it.
      For a family shoot on a boom pole where you can get close to your subject(s) the 20" would be ideal IMHO.
      As cheap as they are, buying a couple would certainly not break the bank. They're quite compact when broken down and easy to handle when set up.
      Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

      HA - HAVE I EVER! that is the Manfrotto 055 tripod with the 502 AH fluid head. It's almost comical how. much I've talked about that combo. Search my channel for Manfrotto and you'll find quite a few videos on it. There is a comparison video between that and a Benro setup - but make sure to what part 2 when I realized the Benro was junk.

    • @MattSpaugh
      @MattSpaugh  Před 3 lety

      The small size would definitely be a plus. I could see using this as just a simple ambient light source - it's great for fill. I'd keep it high to try and maximize any bounce off of white ceilings. If you want to move it around, you'll likely need an assistant as it really needs to be on a stand.
      As I mention in the video, I wasn't really sure how I'd use it when I first got it, but once you have it, you find ways to implement it.
      I've noticed them being used a lot in film-making behind-the-scenes videos - particularly Wes Anderson films.
      Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

      HA - yes, it can be a bit tough to get the support arm into that clamp. I've found it helps it you slide the deflector dish all the way up. It allows you to see down the modifier more. Good luck - and thanks for watching!

  • @rsmolkin

    Do you know if there is any reason to adjust the little reflector plate inside? Would it have any visible difference to the light?

    • @MattSpaugh
      @MattSpaugh  Před 2 lety

      In my testing, it made very little difference. Depending on the brightness of your light source, and the distance to your subject you'll start to see a change. Brighter source and closer distance is going to bring out more specular highlights... but it's pretty minimal. Try out that larger size and let me know if you notice anything in particular.

    • @cichlisuite2
      @cichlisuite2 Před 2 lety

      @@MattSpaugh I would say it made a small but significant difference but just not in the area you were focussing on with this answer. As you would expect, it changes the ratio of the direct and indirect (what you refer to as fill) light. You've matched the exposure on subject but notice how much darker the back wall gets as you move it away/out. You now have more light directly striking the "front" of the globe so get more light on the subject (and can lower your ISO as you show) but also comparably less light bouncing off the sides of the globe and hitting the ceiling and walls (so less fill). It's quite a handy control to have as now you can adjust exposure ratios on subject and background both with distance, as you said, but also by moving the dish. Sometimes the distances will be somewhat fixed by the layout of the location and your desired framing and having some control within the light before you have to pull out flags will be quite useful?
