- Forspoken reviewed by Tom Marks on PlayStation 5, also available on PC.
Square Enix's latest action RPG is the kind of game you’ve probably seen before - from its stereotypical fish-out-of-water fantasy story to its giant open-world map full of repetitive optional tasks. Its combat is flashy and fun enough to entertain across its comparatively short RPG campaign, with fights that do a decent job of pushing you to shake up your use of Frey’s elemental powers even when the overall variety of enemies isn’t particularly impressive. Its parkour system is also satisfying enough, despite the scenery you are running through being about as picturesque as a bowl of rocks with an Instagram filter slapped on.

Why is square enix obsessed with side missions revolved around chasing cats
Because they can’t make side quests lol
Because their writers are bad at their job and have no imagination.
Because it fits with Freys personality and is literally a throw back to the first like 30 mins of the game?
Gimmie the cat!
because Japan. Japan love their cats.
Game companies: We're raising the price of games to $70 because there's an increase in quality
Also game companies:
Exactly, then endnight comes around and says sons of the forest is gonna be only 30$ while still being insane
This heap will be $30 by st. Patricks day
While you could get the Witcher 3 GOTY edition for like $20 on a normal day and $4 if they are on sale, and the game is on sale right at this moment.

The story would’ve already been 100x had they ditched the whole “New York girl wisked away to a magical land” and just settled with a girl who has been living there her entire life. Would’ve made them more likable as they actually have a reason for why she would want to be the hero of her civilization
Finally some constructive criticism

Nah AI can write even better. You can search story written by AI to check out

Nah it's what happens when you fire all the male writers and bring in diverity hires as political pawns.

must be a new team or something, coming from square enix, this is actually unbelievable
Maybe they honestly don't know what to do with an "edgy" protagonist of color.
Square Enix got a bunch of Hollywood script writers to write the story, and those types often resent player feedback, so they likely deliberately ignored the negative reception the game got.
It was too far into development already would be my guess

Don't forget that IGN still gave this a higher score than Alien: Isolation

To be fair that was way before rating-inflation
That just means you don't trust Ryan Mcaffrey's reviews which is fine. But that has no bearing on Tom's.

They cant give the game lower than a certain number. Ive noticed for certain studios (square enix) theyll never dip below a certain threshold. Hell this is prolly the lowest rating IGN has ever given a square enix developed game. Anybody care to fact check that?

This feels like this game was never meant to be a open world but somewhere in production they got forced to turn it into an open world. It shows you they didn’t have any clue about world building and just thought fantasy world building required little effort.
sounds like what anthem had to go through only to be a empty souless tech demo
Well, the story and characters dosent seem so hot either (quite the contrary - if anything, theyre regarded as the games big let down), so Im not convinced a more linear experience coudl have saved it.
square enix is absolutely horrendous at open world games. they should stick to narrative driven linear storytelling so they can actually have a story.
Yeah, that's why yoshi p chose not to go open world. Can't wait to try ffxvi's demo
Elden Ring set a standard for open world RPG’s!
If you're not going to focus on multiple character driven campaigns, you better make sure either the world, the gameplay, or the one main character you do have access to is compelling. The problem with Forspoken seems to be that that is not the case.
The big open world may not necessarily have to be populated with characters to feel "alive", Elden Ring was a desolate world filled with monsters and few people you actually interacted with. But it oozed with mystery and wonder at almost every corner, and you can feel the history and have a sense of what had happened from the way the environment was designed, and the lore embedded in items scattered throughout. This game on the other hand, seems really generic, albeit admittedly pretty looking at times.
