I'm French and when I listen to the Diva Lara Fabian sing I burst into tears...they flow on their own. The texts, the musicality and especially the interpretation of Lara are incredible? She is moving and captivating, you would think she is telling her own life, just wonderful... she gives me goosebumps this song. One of the most beautiful songs of all time... This song was written by Serge Lama (lyrics) and Alice Dona (melody) about 1971/1972. Serge Lama was married at this time to Daisy Brun, his press secretary. He met his second wife Michèle Annie Potier who also was married at this time, and they fell in love. As Michèle Annie Potier was building up her musical career in Northern Africa at this time, they could not meet often. So, he told his friend, Alice Dona, that this situation makes him sick. Alice Dona wrote the tune in about 15 minutes (she was ashamed of this being so quickly and said it had to be whispered to her by angels) and gave it to Serge. He wrote the lyrics in about 2 hours. His disc company (Phillips) was hesitating to publish a title with "sickness", but it appeared on his next album. The song grew popular by the cover of the Egyptian-Italian singer Dalida. Since then, it is considered as a classic of the French chanson. Lara Fabian's version of it was chosen as his favourite by Serge Lama. Lara's interpretation of the song was always changing. You will find several versions by her on the internet.

Lara Fabian's interpretation is very impressive, but for me, as a Frenchman, it really feels like this song was written by a man to be sung by a man (even though the composer is a woman). The lyrics really evoke the images of a male universe.
@@mfcq4987 Sorry for my previous reply to you. I just mixed up the song, as I had commented to a reaction to "Extraits de Yentl" just 10 minutes before your reply arrived. You are correct, I am also thinking that parts of the song do not fit perfectly to a female perspective. But as French is not my primary language, my lessons were 50 years ago, and I never stayed longer than 2 weeks in France, mostly attending training held in English, I am not the best person to understand the little nuances of French.

Certain references in the lyrics of the song like the station platform, the whiskey, the boats are more masculine in my eyes. The evocation of the mother in childhood, the fact that pain destroys talent, all of this is also a little more masculine for me.

Nice to meet you! You have just listened to greatness. This video was at the turn of the Century and Lara is still around. Still singing. She currently is living in Canada. There are several songs she sang around this same time which can only be described as classics. Her emotional delivery to her music inspired Dimash when he was a youngster and they have remained friends through the years. In fact, there are video's of the two of them singing together and it is impossible to not get chills listening to them. I'm sure Lara fans will be sending you all kinds of data so get ready.

Have you heard of the Norwegian singer and national treasure Sissel? She is considered one of the world's top crossover sopranos and has a phenomenal voice. If you have seen the Titanic movie, then you have definitely heard her voice. She has been performing for four decades and is a very special singer. When you hear her voice, you will understand why. Lara was born in Belgium so I would like to introduce you to another great Belgian artist: Loïc Nottet. He has a unique voice and is also a great dancer. His song "Million Eyes" is his most popular one. I recommend the official music video so that you can see his interpretive dancing. His masterpiece lyric wise is "Mr/Mme". It's his only song in French but the music video has English subs.
