You need the infinitive form "to be" here. There are two clues for your answer. The first is that you already have the verb "was" in the sentence, so your sentence has a main verb. The second clue is that the infinitive is after the adjective "advanced". "Adjective + infinite" is a common structure in English, which is used to express attitudes or opinions about something. The student is expressing the opinion that the lecture was too difficult.
