  • When you're used to the status quo with boots it can be hard to imagine what you're missing out on. If you've only worn a size 11 Red Wing for your entire life and have come to know and love the boot, you're likely to defend it against the competition. But once we accept that there is a world of amazing brands and makers out there, our world becomes much broader and we are privy to hidden gems like this.
    The Nicks Americana is a hybrid work boot/casual boot. That may seem like an oxymoron, but these are robust enough to be an everyday work boot in some situations (the mini-lug sole holds it back from most work in the dirt) or it could easily be worn casually since it's in a fancy leather with such ruggedly handsome looks. Better yet this boot can tackle almost anything the day will throw at you with ease and ask for more. You don't have to be at work to appreciate the build quality of a boot like this!

    Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
    I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

    As a former driller, I can 100% attest to the "blue collar Olympics".
    I remember when I was about 19, working an average of 95 hours a week in a tough and arguably dangerous job, I was talking to a 50 year old pipefitter on a job site. He said we were insane to work that much, and that he would never do it anymore. He wanted to live his life, etc. My coworkers and I scoffed and said he was weak.
    Boy oh boy were we dumb. That dude had it made in the shade and wasn't ashamed, while we were breaking our backs in the hot sun, thinking we were better than him for working more/dirtier/more dangerously.
    Bad mindset to have, glad I grew out of it.

    I'm with you, Carl. This weird sort of reverse elitism where guys say, "You can't wear these boots, you're a college student not a construction worker" or "No real man spends $500 on a pair of boots", is just ridiculous. Wear what you want, buy what makes you happy, don't worry about what the other guy's doing.

      @@AesirUnlimited Exactly, 'If you can afford it' being the operative phrase there. As much as I loved the NYG Nailshank boots that Carl did a video on, I know that I'm not going to rack up $100 on my credit card to buy them, knowing that I can't really afford them. But, you know, if anybody's thinking about any last-minute Christmas gifts for me...

      I'll take the partially dissenting opinion where I believe the tool should match the need, and if we are talking college/university student, I will assume that in this case they do not come from money, especially at how expensive post-secondary education is in the US.
      I kind of agree that you should wear what you want, and not to listen to what others say. I also think that not all good ideas at the time are good ideas in the future.
      As an aside, I hate the qualifier, "real". All men are real men and, more commonly, all women are real women.

      I consider it, long term investment for foot health, comfort, and price. With Nick's and Whites you can send em back, have em redone, when really bad fully rebuilt and custom fitted plus the arch support is significant. The custom fit and customization options are pretty nice too so whether you're a college student, retail worker, F1 driver, hunter, actor or a Hotshot /smokejumper. Theres a boot for you and as everyone said, buy what you wish. USA.

    • @zachthompson5335
      @zachthompson5335 Před 4 lety +11

      Nick Trnka “cooler” is personal preference though. Personally I prefer the “cool” of Nick’s but that isn’t the reason I wear Them. For me it’s an assessment of value vs price and what you get with higher end boot makers, value far exceeds price and thus isn’t considered “expensive.”

    • @nicktrnka1480
      @nicktrnka1480 Před 4 lety +11

      @@zachthompson5335 I see your point. There is a great deal of subjectivity in a personal preference and value. My thought was that it is not unexpected that the Nicks are better than the Iron Rangers because they do cost twice the price; they should be better. Certainly, one would expect more in value and quality for $500 vs $250 even in a boot. For example, while both excellent on the track, a Porsche Cayman is cooler than a Subaru BRZ. Now the issue is how to justify Nicks when I have lots of boots that are still in good shape; don't want to be wasteful...

    • @zachthompson5335
      @zachthompson5335 Před 4 lety +3

      Nick Trnka agreed. It’s different strokes for different folks. Just like anything in life that we spend our hard earned money on, it’s whatever fits you needs, wants, budget and most importantly, whatever makes you happy. So long as it makes you happy, that’s a win in my book.

    Carl you nailed it! Though I recomend that my friends take a few days vacation to Spokane and be fitted at the store. This goes for both Nicks and Whites. As to affordablity, as these boots are resoleable and later rebuildable when necessary by the factory. What you end up with is a verturaly factory new boot. This adds up to a sizable saving over your life time. I have seen fellow electricians and lineman go their entire working lives alternating with just two sets.

    The higher quality things about the nicks over the redwings are what make the redwings better for many people.
    - The leather on the redwings is softer, still pretty tough. But the overall size/weight and slim profile goes to redwings.
    - The nicks foot bed/sole has more layers, the redwing is simpler with a real good durable sole. Again lower profile less weight, less bulk.
    It is like comparing a Humvee with a Wrangler.
    And the above is even more clear when comparing to other nicks models.

    “Lumbersexuals” I blew my coffee out of my nose, that’s hilarious. I’m right there with you though I have a masters degree, but I started out as a saw hand (had to pay for college), then timber cruiser and log scaler at a very large mill complex. Long hot days either on the mill yard or in the woods, then moved into logging contract supervision. I put in 10 years in the field (admittedly some was part time during college). Then someone took notice and I moved to the office as a forest manager (think forester on steroids) and now wood guru for our manufacturing facilities as well. I need a boot that can walk into an office and look presentable, walk onto a wood yard and hold up to that nasty environment, and possibly cruise timber all in the same day. If it had a steel toe this one could fit the bill, I’m currently looking at a custom Builder Pro because I need the safety toe in the mill, though I love my Iron Rangers if I’m not going to need steel toes. If these had a safety toe they would be perfect for my needs!

    Never be cheap on Toilet Paper (not possible with CV-19), Laundry Detergent, or Boots! Nick's boots are incredible buddy! However, I like the way the IRs looks compared to Nick's. Sleek enough, and rigged enough. The look is perfect on the IR, and it's just hard to beat. Great video!!! The Nick's sure are special though!

    I like how you made this video and the things you said. You said a lot of things I've been saying and tthinking for a while. Been wearing "work" boots since 1985 on construction sites. That blue collar "thinking " you mentioned , Spot on! I tried the iron Rangers, being a red Wing _ Danner guy for WORK and the iron Ranger for weekends. I just didn't like them. Found Origin, theyre the ones for me now. Great Review Bud

    Just received a pair of these boots, bought largely because of this video, and they are the best fitting boots I have ever had. Even straight out of the box, they fit great and are very comfortable. The nice part is that I can now order other pairs from Nick's and get them faster since the fitting process is on file. Definitely worth the price of admission. I have a lot of boots, and while you don't always get what you pay for, I feel like these boots are a good deal.

    In the 80s, I wore Indy's, Levi's and t-shirts. I still have those Aiden's, and still wear jeans and t-shirts. Looking back, that look stood the test of time. Fads are nonsense. Stick to classics and you can't go wrong.

    Great video, very informative. As an electrician and now a general contractor of sorts, I've see the reverse elitism on the sites for years. Its like the guys who only have the bare minimum of skill and are stuck doing the shit work don't respect the men who work smarter. It's like their hard work is all they have and they separate themselves into a class all of their own so then can berate others and not regret their life choices. Work smarter, not harder. I respect the mud but I also respect the guy who sweeps up the restaurant.

    Carl, I’m a fairly new subscriber in my early fifties. I really enjoy your videos. I’ve wanted to kind of up my game in the apparel department and I find you to be a good resource for that. I initially came here a few weeks ago for an Iron Ranger review (a pair otw btw) but now I’m reading about denim and mtm etc....I wouldn’t have even used “mtm” 2 weeks ago but here we are.
    Also, I suddenly I need several pairs of boots. Anyway keep up the content, you have a real knack for this. Now off to Nicks website...

    • @CarlMurawski

      Thank you so much! With boots it’s definitely a matter of “buy once, cry once”. Whether you go with Nicks, Whites, Wesco, or another similar brand you’ll be shocked how much different a made to measure boot will feel.

  • @jekinneys
    @jekinneys Před 2 lety

    I think the information is presented great! I love how you mentioned it's not really for a job site but you did mention blue collar people talking about getting dirty and sweaty to measure work ethic, which is 100% true. At the same time I don't know most people, even the licensed plumbers per say that make $50 plus an hour who would buy these boots because of cost. This is a stereotype for sure as I do know a lot of Sneakerheads pay crazy amount of money for sneakers. To be fair none are blue collar works, So it would be interesting to see who the customer demographics are for these boots.
    I say this as I and others would save for a year to get a nice pair of Red Wings when they are starting out at an apprentice and/or school level when in theory you would need the better boot as you are doing 80% of the work, at least all the grunt work.

    I’d love to get a pair of nick’s someday. I do wish we had a bit more boots in the 300-500 dollar range besides Redwing, Grant Stone, and maybe Parkhurst. It seems like there’s a quick jump from 400 dollar boots to 650+, so I think there’s definitely more room for higher quality than Red wings while potentially reducing costs by using other tanneries or overseas assembly. I’d really like to see thicker insole and midsole leathers in more lower priced boots.

    Nah Carl, this doesn't "slay" the Iron Ranger. It's much more expensive - hence it's only expected to be somehow "better" than the IRs. If they were at the same price-point, then the title's justified. Other than that, this is like a boxing match wherein the fight is between a middleweight and a heavyweight. Still, great vid!

    My work boots are strictly for safety and function. At the end of the day, they come off and stay in my locker at work. Guys that wear their work boots all the time look to me like they are poor, lazy, or don't give a.f. about their appearance. There is nothing wrong with wearing casual boots that look good and are made well.

      When I see someone in work boots outside of work, I see a blue collar worker and respect them even more that I normally would, poor or otherwise. Also, I’ve had a couple occasions where my safety toe protected me outside of work, and a couple occasions where I wish I was wearing them. I guess it really depends on your type of work/boot; If you’re talking about knee-high rubber overboots, I see your point.

    I hope your right. I have worn redwings for at least a dozen years buying 7 pairs. I have usually bought “work” boots but recently purchased a pair of Iron Rangers. During the break in process staples came through the insoles in both boots. No response from the customer service email/phone so I returned them. It is my belief that red wing is cutting quality to make a few extra pennies. Giving Nicks a chance.
