One of the best reactions, and I've seen many. You capture the false simplicity and the artfulness of the song. Everything is where it needs to be. She's a great musician and Portugal is proud of this song whatever the festival results because it represents us and it's good. The guitar is not like Fado, but the overall feeling of the song is totally portuguese.

saudade is not a sad word.
saudade is the embrace of the past
to the pain of the present.
    saudade is reunion.
Saudade is confirmation that happiness exists.
    saudade is gratitude.
Saudade is the escape that saves us from ourselves.

    saudade is a rainbow.
saudade is cold that shakes you absences.

This is my all time favourite Eurovision song! It combines many things I absolutely adore in music such as interesting rhythms, traditional elements, chords that are surprisingly jazzy and cool harmonies. I also love the atmosphere of the song and the production is sooo sick!! And the fact that it’s partly in Portuguese as well! Ahh I just can’t get enough of the song and I’m happy that the juries appreciated it in the contest.

Such a beautiful song and I agree with you, so happy the juries appreciated it. Would’ve loved if just one country gave it 12 points though, just to see Maro’s reaction. Too bad it didn’t get as much points from the televotes. Think it deserved more than 9th place!

Bravo Maro. Author, composer and performer of this magical song! ❤
As the song says... saudade... "nothing more there i can say, says it in a better way" because the word saudade only exists in Portuguese language. There is no direct translation.
Saudade is not only sadness, it is also joy at the same time. Just as you feel sadness for the absence, you feel nostalgia, but at the same time you feel joy, for the good moments spent and for the feelings experienced. It is a mixture of feelings that is difficult to explain, that is why in Portuguese there is the word "Saudade". Because she sums up in one word, that mixture of feelings. This song is about the loss of someone (her grandfather), but it's not only sad... it's like a celebration of what was lived too... Not always you feel Saudade with tears in your eyes. You may feel Saudade with a smile in your face... 🥰❤🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹

I need to tell you what means is the best definition of "Saudade" that I ever read, and I didn't write this it was Conan Osiris that wrote this,
    " Saudade is a spectrum,
It's a feeling, a sensation, and a way of life. You can see it in the pictures at your grandma's house. You can taste it in any childhood candy. You can touch it on any old couch. You can hear it in any old seller's chanting. It is unique and transversal at the same time.
It is also a result of hundreds of centuries of being cornered into the sea. Cornered by land, by scarcity, by others, by our own, by pain.
By seeing the danger and death as the only beacon of hope, beyond religion. Ultimately, it's the final romanticization of the void.
It is being forever in love with solitude, with absence. Being forever in love with the cracks in your heart."

Btw, "Saudade" is a Portuguese word (apparently, with no equivalent in any other language, but I doubt it) that describe a sentiment of fondness, longing or belonging, or missing someone or something. Hadn't heard this one before, but it's absolutely one of my favourites for this year! Maybe not to win like you said, but the kind of music that I immediately like. No need to hear it multiple times first to learn to appreciate it like some other songs. Not saying that would make songs bad, but many songs in this competition will only be heard once or twice by a huge part of the voting audience, so certain level of simplicity can be a strength.
I really enjoy their style of singing too, it just flows in these natural sounding waves and manages to be interesting without covering a huge range. Also not relying on vibrato or melisma or other fancy things. I was expecting to hear a bit more Portuguese though from the name of the song, but always like a mix of languages too. Go Portugal!

Portugal definitely had the best staging last year. This year Maro will probably do very well, too. I'm positive it'll qualify. Saudade is a noun for the feeling of missing. When a Portuguese says saudade, it needs no explanation. There comes a feeling of joy, sadness, nostalgia and also peace. Saudade is missing someone or something that is no longer by our side, but remains in our mind and heart. It has a deep and intimate meaning and her voice signs this very well....

When Salvador Sobral won the Eurovision, he said "music is not about fireworks, music is about feelings".
The word "saudade" cannot be translated, it means the feeling of loosing, something, someone. You feel "saudade" when you don't see your beloved ones. Even though most people don't know this word and meaning, when you heard it, you feel happiness, sadness, whith chills, vibes, nostalgy. It's a word that travels your feelings. Absolutly astonishing song.

Thank you so much for your kind words abour our song. Saudade is a portuguese word, hard to translate. It´s the memory of something that happened in your life or a moment that you would like to remember... Or a person, like in this song: someone who lost her best friend - that`s why they say: So, nothing more than i can say, say in a better way - saudade - oh you´re gone...

Basically saudade its not just a word...
U can miss something or someone.
But saudade its a portugueses word to a feeling u cant describe.
Saudade its a word for those fellings in ur heart when u really miss someone u love that had passed away, like a grandparent or a dog its that feeling it hurts but in the same time gives u happy by remember them...
it dont have a translate its just saudade.
Beautiful Song i just love it.

As a Swede I didn’t find this daring at all. It felt like a stroke of genius. With all the extravagant, crazy, loud songs in eurovision, a song like this definitely stands out. Caught my eye straight away last year, so happy it qualified and did well, and I still can’t stop listening to it. Portugal you sent a true gem last year!

I never follow Eurovision, and I had never heard of Maro, but this got me hooked.
I feel that the sentiments in the lyrics, and of course naming the song Saudade, set the mood and make it as Portuguese as you can get. But for me, the arrangement, rather than traditional Portuguese music, seems to suggest flamenco. I know many Portuguese musicians in recent years have incorporated elements of flamenco into their work. Some of the dramatic flourishes with the guitar, the vocals, coros and palmas (beating time through clapping), the six-eight rhythm and the general stripped down arrangement evoke flamenco more than fado. Gorgeous. I would love to hear an all-Portuguese version of this song if it's out there. And I also love her vocal tone. Reminds me of traditional singing styles from central Africa, like Congo (Zap Mama), or even Finland (Varrtina..?) Next stop is to find the song on Lyrics Training, and soon I'll be singing it the shower!

"Saudade" is a feeling. It doesn't have a straight translation.
"Saudade" refers to the emptiness of missing someone. It is a more profound feeling than nostalgia. It is a feeling that almost corrupts your soul.
