- The Northrop Grumman (formerly Grumman) EA-6B Prowler is a twin-engine, four-seat, mid-wing electronic-warfare aircraft derived from the A-6 Intruder airframe. The EA-6A was the initial electronic warfare version of the A-6 used by the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy. Development on the more advanced EA-6B began in 1966. An EA-6B aircrew consists of one pilot and three Electronic Countermeasures Officers, though it is not uncommon for only two ECMOs to be used on missions. It is capable of carrying and firing anti-radiation missiles (ARMs), such as the AGM-88 HARM missile.
The Prowler was in service with the U.S. Armed Forces from 1971 until 2019. It has carried out numerous missions for jamming enemy radar systems, and in gathering radio intelligence on those and other enemy air defense systems. From the 1998 retirement of the United States Air Force EF-111 Raven electronic warfare aircraft, the EA-6B was the only dedicated electronic warfare plane available for missions by the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the U.S. Air Force until the fielding of the Navy's EA-18G Growler in 2009. Following its last deployment in late 2014, the EA-6B was withdrawn from U.S. Navy service in June 2015, followed by the USMC in March 2019.
Hope you enjoy!!

Thanks for watching everyone. If I could ask that you share this video around where you can (Facebook, Twitter etc) I would really appreciate it so much. Looks as if my videos just are not being pushed by CZcams anymore and your support and help during this time would be amazing for me and the channel. Thanks and take care! :-)
Sent it to a number of my Prowler guys...Awesome job as usual!!
Interesting take on the stealth fighter F117 take down. I thought the whole purpose of the stealth aircraft to include the B2 spirit was not to need such EW coverage. Well there was a reason why the F117 went out first.
czcams.com/video/rwNCGCifsXo/video.html My friends from VAQ-209.
I got you bro
Hey thanks for the Grumman love God bless America and Canada the longest undefended border in the world!!!
My dad was on a redesign team for the wing on that jet in the 80âs. We had a long, fun conversation looking at one in a museum after I had surgery a few weeks ago.
Wow that's really awesome
Let's hope Your repair/life extension programme is just as successfull!
Thomas Borgsmidt I had a long range sensor upgraded. Cochlear implant.
Iâm sure heâs just as disappointed as I am to see those awesome aircraft retired...
My dad flew the ea-6b and he is In my opinion the coolest dad you could ever have
Flight of the Intruder, one of my favourite films of all time, this aircraft punched well above itâs weight....
It's certainly in my top 10.
The book is even better. Really suggest you read it.
Ted Ferkin Ah Iâll look into this thanks
@@iamweejonny Sounds like something to add to the shelf definitely.
This is a AE-6 Prowler not an A-6 Intruder.
ooh, the Prowler.
always had a bit of a soft-spot for jamming craft.
maybe we'll someday get a vid on the Aadvark equivalent, the Raven?
Sparkbark!
I miss when planes were made for a specific task. There's no more specialisation left in aircraft.
@Joshua N. Ajang no because we dont have that much money for defense budget
Nightraven is best raven
@@grubbybum3614 Back in the cold war the USAF and USN air-wings had an aircraft for each role now its all down to like 3 (Growler, Super Hornet, Hawkeye
Always loved the look of the A-6 family.
Damn good bits of kit for their day.
I worked on a Marine base (replacing computer systems) with several Prowler squadrons. These guys LOVED their planes! If you asked any of them, from the pilots to ECMOS to ground crew, they'd take you out to their plane and show it off like it was their prized possession.
I was a member of VMAQ-2. One thing you are mistaken on is the appreciation of ECM by ground troops. Simply put, then a Prowler was flying remote detonation IED's didn't work. Patrols actually changed their tactics when they heard we'd been replaced by a Navy squadron flying Growlers because they didn't have the ability we did.
@fried spaghetti I can't get into details of how it worked, some of it is opsec, some just classified. But there's a fair bit of information available on the web if you go digging.
@fried spaghetti search "ea-6b ied" there are a number of stories about their use in the anti roadside bomb mission.
@fried spaghetti so the A6 crews had different relationships than most two seaters because of the seating. High fives after an on target run!
@fried spaghetti negative, pilot was the only one with controls and the right seater was either the bombardier/navigator in the A-6 or ecm officer in the EA-6. He was not qualified as pilot.
fire304, first, 304 is the callsign of the first fire truck I ever rode to a call, and still my favorite.
Anti-IED work was not something that was EVER envisioned by the designers and developers of the aircraft. They built the plane for a high-end war. But in the end, the plane was highly effective at it. Really shows the capability of the system!
I worked on these from 2007-2011, VMAQ-1. I miss their distinctive howl they would make as they popped their speed breaks over cherry point.
What an aircraft, canât believe itâs out of service now
EF-18 Growler has taken it's place.
@@ph11p3540 yes that may be true but it cant carry as many jamming pods and ot cant carry then as far
@@ph11p3540 not for the Marines and the capabilities haven't matched what the prowler could do. The only thing the Growler has improved is velocity (it is an F-18) and cost.
Unfortunately with the very latest imaging missiles it was a sitting duck. Even spraying out flares like there is no tomorrow it would get hit more than 50%of the time if fired on with the imaging Archer. It could not turn tight enough to "get inside" if the archer was fired from about 5NM away.
Electronic Warfare. My job when I was in the Navy. I knew a few Prowler pilot and all loved them. A sad day when they retired.
I've loved the E/A-6B ever since I was in cub scouts and did a camp out with our sibling counterparts in the US on Woodbe Island. My buddy in that group, his dad was the base commander at the N.A.S. there. What made it cool is I got to go on a privet tour there and spend time in the simulators for both mission flight and carrier landings... it's something I'm never going to forget and has solidified my love for this bird.
I was part of VAQ-132 Prowler squadron from 76-80 at Whidbey Island WA.
D
I did West PACs on the USS Constellation . Loved that AIRCRAFT!
I was an AD with VAQ-130. Plank owners on the USS NIMITZ.
*Wargame: Red Dragon Flashbacks intensify*
During the Vietnam War the A 6 Intruder was called the mini B 52.
During the 1991 Gulf War the F4 Phantom was also use by the US Air Force for electronic warfare.
I think they were flown by a US Air Force National Guard/Air Reserve during that Gulf War.
I flew the Prowler from 1983 - 1986 at Cherry Point (VMAQ-2). Nice memories!
I was Hyd Mech for F-4's 78-84 80-84 MCAS Beaufort 81 USS Forrestal Med cruise TAD Cherry Point twice]
The Prowler was hardly a "small" aircraft, but it was only standing next to one that gave you the full picture of that. The EA-6 had an empty weight only slightly less than a B-24, Its length was only seven feet less than a B-24 as well. For a twin engined jest, it was really an impressively large airplane.
The first time I saw one of these I was a HAWK Missile Officer stationed on MCAS Cherry Point and knew that was what I wanted to do in my Marine Corps career. It was big, it was "ugly," and it had an awesome mission! Had the good fortune to go to flight school in Pensacola, FL, shortly after as a student Naval Flight Officer (NFO) and then trained at Whidbey Island, WA, in the EA-6B as an Electronic Countermeasures Officer (ECMO). Stationed with VMAQ-2 (Q2), MCAS Cherry Point in the early to mid-80s we were the only U.S. Marine Corps EA-6B squadron at the time (subsequently divided into four separate squadrons). Known then as the "Playboys," Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 2 (VMAQ-2) was mercifully renamed the âDeath Jestersâ in 2000 (long after my time). With many deployments and missions in the U.S. and overseas pre Gulf War, I felt fortunate and proud to be a part of this historic squadron/aircraft. Though I probably didn't appreciate it enough at the time, this was the best part of my twenty-one year career in the Corps. Long now retired, I think back often of "flying" the Prowler and was sad to see that it was retired in 2019, I believe. But, any time I want another walk down memory lane I go to visit the Prowler (Bureau Number or âBuNoâ 162230) at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (Air and Space Museum) in Chantilly, VA, and "relive" the dream! CY - Can Do Easy! Prowlers FOREVER! Thanks for video and the memories.
Just watched this and enjoyed the memory. I first flew in the EA-6B in 1978 and was with the first USMC deployment of Prowlers to WestPac on the USS Midway, Det X. Good memories, though in my first deployment in 1976 in the EA-6A, I had to take a night barricade landing due to low fuel and other problems. Thought I was going to swim aboard that night. Great aircraft!
My dad flew it and I think he is the coolest dad someone could ever have
I appreciate a non-corona video on a subject I love and breathe! As a Marine I learned to love that plane!
Fun fact, I was a 2621 SIGINT collections and analysis. In the field I actually trained with Prowler squadrons. Great planes, great crews, got to work with them at WTI in Yuma AZ in 2005. Great jamming platform.
The first time I saw one of them was in the awesome movie The Final Countdown. I was intrigued as I had no clear idea what electronic warfare was. In my defense in 1980 when the movie was first released I was very very young.
I thought it was ugly, but interesting. The A-7 Corsair II of course easily remained one of my favorite looking planes.
Pardon my old guy stories. When I was a kid I saw an Intruder fly a demo at Andrew's Air Force Base. Incidentally, there was a Vulcan bomber at the same show and he flew an awesome demo that day as well. Anyway, the pilot flew his demo, which was really cool, and after he landed he pulled up to the tarmac near the audience, front and center, turned toward the crowd, and folded one wing to salute everyone who was there. Ever since then I've always imagined the Intruder as the plane that salutes you.
@Biliary Clinton Cool!
More great content
Thank you!! đđ
One of my fav planes! My Dad use to wrk on the jamming pod while our family was stationed at Whidbey island. He was with VAQ-135..
This plane is one of my favorite small American bombers it looks like a tear drop with wings and if i could chose one plane Iâd love to own and fly itâd be this one
I'd be hard pushed to chose this, a Phantom or the Enlish Electric Lightening (which is the only aircraft to ever intercept a U2 or Concord).
My dad flew it and I wish I was him
My Father was on the Prowler in the 80s and 90s! 2 tours in the Atlantic!

Hmmm..... Russia is in the toilet with those oil-prices, so the military must be on its toes - just in case Putin & Co. does something stupid - as they are want to.
I was allowed the honor of serving with VAQ-132 from April 1981 to August 1985. Served aboard USS Eisenhower during good times as well as not so good (Beirut). I came in as an AMEAN and left an AME2. I remember two of my shipmates with the most fondness, AME1 Leo F. Lindley (my sea daddy), and AME2 David Hope (my roomie). I wish other memories were as clear as they should be, alas, I have subjected myself to much since then. If anyone finds this page who was from that era, and remembers the "Moose", drop a note.
i used this plane in ace combat 5 waay to much lmao
Im a commercial fisherman out of Washington St. Man I would get goose bumps or fall out of my bunk when these guys would sneak up on us at a very low level. They would make a couple passes and give us a much needed show. Thank you!! Sound of Freedom
My dad worked for Grumman aerospace from 1970 to 75. He was a research electrician and installed electronic parts inside the aircraft. Grumman was located in Bethpage New York on long Island.
Great report Matt. Much nicer to listen to than the robot voice on a lot of your competition's channels. There's a movie called "flight of the Intruder", that people might want to check out.
Man I feel old. All the planes I grew up with then knew through my 20s are being phased out.
A guy we're working for. (Fixing up his house) apparently used to fly the A-6 Intruder. Just found out today, so I'm doing a little research on it so I can have something to talk about with the home owner. Nice fella. Love your channel by the way.
I got the privilege to work with a flyable one down at the Palm Springs Air Museum when I volunteered there. I have itâs quite larger than one would expect and as the PSAM is well know for being able to touch the planes on exhibit it was really an honor to see it roll into the hangar once it was decommissioned.
Thanks Matt. Awesome work choosing this aircraft for your topic. Always wondered what was military application of this one. Please do let us know how the essential functions of this aircraft addressed today in a follow up episode đ
I appreciate how you described everything and give your thanks to everyone out there. Thank you
I served with the USMCR at NAS Whidbey island Washington state USA WITH SQUADRON VMAQ-4. OUR PILOTS WERE THE BEST! BAR NONE! They proved it every single day. God bless them all.
I first heard about this aircraft in Clancy's Red Storm Rising. Amazing book.
Loved that book. Just finished it recently
As ALWAYS, Great video.
As a kid the Intruder and the Prowler were my favourite military aircraft, nice to learn a few more thing about the Prowler.
well done, keep up the great work!
I worked on avionics for the A6E and EA6B in the Marines. Unbelievable capabilities!
great video as always
My father US Navy worked on the Prowler and went on 3 Aircraft carrier deployments in the late 70âs to the mid 80âs
Proud to of been a âScorpâ with VAQ-132. The Prowler was my favorite plane to work on and 132 my favorite command.
I was at NAS Whidbey Island. They are probably the LOUDEST jet ever. Our base housing was just outside the gate.
VAQ-130
Great video of one of my all-time favorites. Be safe, keep your family healthy. Cheers
Great video mate. đ
Great video of one of my all time favorite aircraft! Keep it up!!
Your videos are very informative, and just the right amount of info/time
I wish they didnât retire this awesome aircraft, I donât think it gets the recognition it deserves since itâs not a âcoolâ looking fighter but this has always been one of my favorites, just a super stout, awesomely capable multi role aircraft, carrier decks just wonât be the same without these beautiful aircraft staged on deck, love this jet and hate to see her go...
I love the Intruder/Prowler legecy, all weather strike missions and advanced EW for the time was revolutionary! Especially the ground support role of the Intruder.. good video!!
One of my personal favorite aircraft, from its usage to its looks, its one beautiful aircraft
I was an O.S. on the USS Midway, and I remember having these on board.
Excellent video. I love how you walked through the systems and how they worked which I have not encountered before!
Just a note, after retiring the A4 the USN still had the wonderful A7 for attack that was eventually replaced by the F18. Also the USS Coral Sea and USS Midway had the A6 family of aircraft as part of their carrier wings.
Ahh... The good ol' Prowler... Looks almost as quirky as the first British jet planes. Love it!
Always wondered about this aircraft. Never took the time to research what was out there, so thanks for all the work you put into this great video.
If I ever get my lost models back. I have a 48th of both jamming aircraft. I am subscribed to your channel.
Oneof my favorite aircraft of all time.
Brilliant as normal.. keep them coming.. đđŹđ§đș
My stepfather worked on them though the 70 to 80. He love them .his favorite jet .
Luv the vids
Very good info! Nice aircraft!
Awesome vid
Much like the A-10 it should not have been retired for none of the newer jets can truly replace it
EA-18G...
TS: Yes, yes they can. The EA-6B design was surpassed in half a dozen major ways. Every plane reaches that point.
The prowler reminds me of the a10 ppl thought so little of them but in the end they always needed them. Awesome video and shared as well.
Cool shot of a V-22 taking off in the background at 2:45
VAQ 131 and USS Ranger CV-61 CVW-2. In 1986, the LANCERS participated in RIMPAC and upon their return became one of the first squadrons to be trained in the handling, loading and firing of the High Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM). Subsequently, they were actively involved in the first fleet firing of a HARM.
GEAR!!!
I don't know what it is about planes like these...the A-10 being another...big ole honking planes that everybody thinks is ugly...you can keep your sexy planes...I like the work horses (-:
My Bird, the one I use to rebuild its engines all the time. Well it is retired now so...
Rust In Peace.
Best intro on youtube!
Absolutely beautiful aircraft- not to mention space for you and three friends!
Thanks Brother
EA-6 Prowler. It's magic
Gulf War I 1990
I remember seeing (graphics) on the amount of aircraft it took for a mission.
A lot
I wonder what it's like now?
Retired
For me the Grumman A-6 Intruder is one if not the sexiest coolest Aircraft ever made. Just somthing with it with all the bombs and nothing other is so super cool.
Very cool. Prowlers used to train near where i live. It was always a good show.
You never disappoint with the amount of extensive research put into these videos. This is so much better than those annoying robot voiced military videos.
My dad "Bilbo" was an ECMO in the 80s, VAQ-209, the "Star Warriors." They've literally got Darth Vader as the emblem on their squadron patch. He actually deployed for Deny Flight and Northern Watch.
I used to look foward to seeing them always at the yearly airshow at Andrews AFB when i lived there.
It was always awesome seeing Darth Vader stare down at us from the tail
Keep the vids coming mat, iam stuck at home for 1 month.
Playing Arma 3 and drinking some Red's Apple Ale after a hard day's work.

I got to watch the last one operational one land in point Mugu. It was pretty cool to watch it land for the last time.
Will always be a cool aircraft in my eyes.

I don't know why but that gold plated canopies always fascinated me.
I had a one as a model when I was a kid. Loved it. It was one of my favorites. It was different and odd looking, so I preferred it to my model fighter jets.
Well, the lack of Prowlers wasn't exactly the only reason why the 117 was downed.
Good intelligence and good placement of SAMs?
@@sabre22b Same flight path multiple times, malfunctioning weapons bay doors, and pure luck.
@@AugmentedGravity IAW, the Golden BB.
Well the whole thing about the F117 and the B2 is that they were not supposed to need the cover of an EA6B and Electronic Jamming for ground based radar and air defence. Their stealth technology was supposed to render it unnecessary. However that was proven to be false and a serious error on the part of Air Force doctrine. It wouldn't be the first time, just look at how the Air Force and Navy viewed Air2Air combat in Vietnam.
@@Marinealver They don't need EW coverage to this day. Not the B2 at least. And what do you mean with your last statement?
These are very useful for Anti-SAM & Anti-Radar in general.
Lucky enough to see these at Whidbey Island, very cool. Sad to see they are now totally gone
I've always liked the Intruder/Prowler aircraft. I remember seeing them flying over in the gulf in my younger days.
p.s. Stay safe and well to everyone out there.
The EA-6 is a chonky boy
I loved this big ugly bird. Wonderful plane to maintain.
She's gorgeous!
I was in a VAQ squdron on one of the last carrier deployments of the EA-6B platform. Thank you for this video. Would love to see a video on its replacement the EA-18G
I was with VMCJ-1 in DaNang in '66 and '67. The EA-6B was referred to as "Willy the Whale"
Man of knowledge
Served on a carrier and we had a squadron of these bad boys. Let me tell you, when that thing was in the cat and ready to launch, it shook every bone in your body
Hey Matsimus, can You do a Video about Your Dogđ, it must be full grown yet, i appreciate the Effort, You take to make all these high quality Videosđđ»đđ»đđ»đđ»đđ»âđđ»â
The video is quite nice.
Cool, but I like the Growler more.
And the Navy probably preferred the parts and maintenance compatibility with the Super Hornets.
The problem was also that the aircraft didn't have a big enough flight envelope to get it out of trouble. IE a 60%+ hit rate from an AA-11 with imaging head fired from the rear or front at 5NM regardless of how many flares you pop.
Want a little observation from a Marine Corps Grunt? Being on multiple carriers over the years I always rated this jet the LOUDEST in the fleet. I always knew when they were taking off. Ear piercing
