- Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates makes up the historic South African Soweto Derby. In this episode of Roots of the Rivalry, we dive into the history of Orlando Pirates, the history of Kaizer Chiefs, and the history of the Soweto Derby in order to get to the root of what divides these two South African teams. But the man that caused the division, Kaizer Motaung, is also responsible for their ties to each other!

Great timing. They're playing today
Can we please get a SJ Earthquakes vs. LA Galaxy rivalry?
Next Simba vs Young africans. From Tanzania
Somebody found out his subs are South Africans. And it's sad because these teams fell of from the old rivalry they used to have. It's all about money now.
Please do ROOTS OF THE RIVALRY (Kariakoo/Dar-es-Salaam Derby) between two East-African giant clubs, Simba (Sunderland) SC and Young Africans (Yanga) SC @RabonaTV they are both from Tanzania.
Didn't expect this one. Love from South Africa! 🇿🇦🔥
Same here bro,From Mpumalanga. I had to refresh the vid to make sure rabona actually made this😹
Bro I’m so shocked right now
Amabhakabhaka for life 🏴☠️
Lol I’m so surprised to see this thanks Adrian and Rabona!!
Me too bro🔥
As much as I don’t watch our domestic league anymore I have to say I’m proud of this roots of the rivalry between the two biggest clubs in South Africa 🇿🇦 and as a subscriber my respect for you Adrian went up 100 notches, keep them coming ❤️
Same
Why don't you support your local league?
@@zizoushifty1483 mate to be honest with you the quality is just poor in my opinion and it’s the reason why the league is dominated by one team, the title race is over halfway through the season 😂🤦🏽♂️ and besides the European Leagues in particular the Premier League has set the standard so high and it’s exhilarating
Man always watch your domestic league never stops you to follow other leagues as well
@@clintstewart5545 nope 👎🏽 you can’t decide for me what to watch, my heart knows what it wants
We need a Peñarol and Nacional video. So many great players come from these two teams. Suarez, Forlan, Valverde, Darwin, etc.
Bought my best ever FM Regen wonderkid from Nacional so I love them
Man oh man, YES!
Even though they're both nowhere near the same monsters they used to be at a continental level it's still considered one of the top clásicos from all over the world, and there's a reason - if not many, for it being the case.
They encapsulate what it means to be uruguayan and to overachieve regardless of how impossible the task of toppling down the giants from Argentina and Brasil might seem.
This one for me is an essential one, and I don't mean it just because I'm uruguayan myself, I swear 😂
@@cvetomirgeorgiev9106 haha and mine from peñarol. soft spot for uruguay league
I’m from the US and while I have heard of this rivalry before, I didn’t know anything about the history of it. That being said, Orlando Pirates have one of the all-time best badges in the world.
Seeing Mahamutsa in the thumbnail brings back memories.
If you don't know him, he was like our very own Pepe, a very aggressive center back.
ROOOOI!!! What a warrior man!
Bro
As a neutral he was so fun to watch
Some say he won 9 trophies while playing for Bucs
Rabona talking bout South African football😭 that's unexpected
Respect Brother nice to see a local rivalry on international stage💯
Agreed! Brilliantly documented too.
As a die hard RabonaTV and a Mzansi football lover this is beautiful to see Adrian. Irrespective of where the teams are now, its still a massive occasion with rich history.
I am German and Scottish so I've enjoyed the past episodes of this, but I spent MOST of my life in South Africa so I am excited to see this one on your channel!
Aaaaand? Are you more a glamour boy or a buccaneer?
@@Goalloungetv to be honest I grew up in Cape Town, I had a soft spot for Ajax Cape Town, not that they were good. I enjoyed seeing the rivalry and cultures of Pirates and Chiefs but didn't pick a side. They both seemed cool.
@@SavageIntent Fair enough...Ajax use to be a talent hub! 🔥
As an Orlando Pirates fan this video warmed my chest. Great job Adrian!
Appreciated Loic!
Pretoria boy and massive Sundowns fan 👆
Thanks for making this, Adrian. Appreciate the love for Mzansi🇿🇦
Up the Brazilians
Eish, it seems like it will be some time before Sundowns has a rival worth RabonaTV covering in 🇿🇦. 👀
@@Goalloungetv they clean Supersport dry at the end of each season
*'Kasi whistle'*. 'zillians!
This is crazy because I'll be at the game tomorrow.
Have fun bro!
I'm so glad this video was made, please make a vid of the Zimbabwe derby as well... Highlanders vs Dynamos.... this derby sadly straight up splits the country into 2 . Ndebeles vs Shonas. It felt like it was The whole city of Bulawayo vs The whole city of Harare. The rivalry is so intense that if the national team had more players from one of these clubs it became such a political thing for the country with Dynamos being more successful ( and the success was at times questionable ) I remember there was a time football was so divided in the country .... when Orlando Pirates played a CAF Champions league game vs CAPS ( a team from Harare ) in Bulawayo a couple of years back .... the amount of people who booed for CAPS just showed the level of no love between the fans.... and it all stemmed from the rivalry between Highlanders vs Dynamos. I would be interesting to know the perspectives from both sets of fans if you were able to find some. Also interesting fact is a lot of people who support Dynamos support Chelsea ( I think there was a link between the two clubs way back when Dynamos was founded ) and a lot of old school Ndebele fans support Newcastle... whilst the younger generation when they saw their team not being so successful over the years they Supported Orlando pirates as a second team ( I think from both sides it was also the whole kit thing as well )
ah man! what a refreshing video. Adrian really is HIM! proper research & quality collaborations. Dropping some gems I didn't even know as a South African.
Bra, Adrian is the fucking best
You're right Khanyisa! Adrian's attention to detail really set's RabonaTV's content apart, and both Neo & Shakes repped their teams so well. 🙌
As a South African this was unexpected but much appreciated episode
One for the Basque derby would be nice as well. This is probably my favorite series on the channel, so it was nice to see it come back.
Adrian you're an absolute legend! Echoing some of the comments made already, as a long time subscriber I didn't expect the Soweto derby to make an appearance ever on the channel. But wow as always the quality of your research and love for your craft was a privilege to witness. Thank you bro! 🇿🇦🇿🇦
Warms my heart to see how happy this video has made so many people. I didn't expect this reaction! It's my pleasure.
💯 We completely share this sentiment too - it was an absolute pleasure! 👊
One Other Divide I Can See Is Kaizer Chiefs Is The Glamorous Breakaway Like Inter While Orlando Pirates Are Like AC Milan,The Original "Club Of The People".
Seeing The Soweto Derby, Our Derby On My Favorite Football CZcams Channel Makes Me So Happy. Love From South Africa 🇿🇦
Fun fact
The British rock band, Kaiser Chiefs, was named after Kaizer Chiefs. The name Orlando Pirates came from one of the movies from the 1940s starring Errol Flynn.
Peace from 🇿🇦
🇿🇦 Finally we have South African teams
I have been wishing for years that you would do this roots video!!! I am the happiest person on the planet right now! The first video i saw on your channel was a roots video and since then i have been hoping this day would come. Thank you so so much Adrian!!
It's almost as if he knew what you were thinking.😉
As a South African I just love this video. Keep bringing us the good content bro
🇿🇦❤
OMFG, I grew up in Johannesburg!
I can confirm that both these clubs are by far the biggest clubs in South African football. The Sundowns are quite successful, but the chiefs & pirates are on another level in terms of fanbases across the country
Dylan, but why did you leave Jozi? 🤷🏽♂👀
This was absolutely awesome. great stuff and you guys covered a lot. What also added to the Derby in the 2000's was JIMMY TAU!!!! (Pirates fans call him Jimmy Judas). He was a young Orlando Pirates Right back and Captain who left and signed for Kazier Chiefs and get this, Became captain of Kazier Chiefs. He won league titles with both clubs and was an absolute class act. A joy to watch down the right flank.
yoooooh, now you're taking us back! Jiiiiiiiiiimmy Tau. Yes, yes...the man definitley added his own spice to this derby. 🙌
Great to have the *Root of the Rivalry* series back, Adrian!
Here's some suggestions for your next ROTR video:
Casablanca Derby - Raja vs. Wydad
Clásico Uruguayo - Peñarol vs. Nacional
Derby della Lanterna - Genoa vs. Sampdoria
Derby della Mole - Juventus vs. Torino FC
Fla-Flu - Flamengo vs. Fluminense
Hamburg Derby - FC St. Pauli vs. HSV
Stockholm Derby - AIK vs. Djurgårdens vs. Hammarby
My favorite series is back. Roots of the rivalry.🔥
As a South African who has fallen out with local football (due to corruption and the state of SA politics) this was a fantastic watch.
Is SA football corrupt?
Love hearing about lesser known rivalries like
Great video Adrian 🔥
Eeeeeyyy you don't know how much I've been waiting for this Adrian... thank you man🙏🙏😭😭
Growing up my dad has always been a Pirates fan and his younger bro, my uncle was and is still a Chiefs fan. I spent more time with my uncle and supported Chiefs. Until I was 9 and my dad took me to FNB stadium to watch the derby and he gifted me my first ever football jersey outside the stadium before we entered. Since then, well, once a Pirate! Up the Bucks! Great video. Thanks mate!
WWhhat!!!!!😲😲😲...........I'm from 🇿🇦South Africa 🇿🇦and I'm a kaizer chiefs supporter since birth-inherited......and this was sooo unexpected.....SHOUT OUT MAN???👍👍👍❤️we don't actually go unnoticed 😂😅
One of my local derbies here in SA!
South African football history is quite a fascinating topic worth covering in whole. The Soweto Derby being probably the biggest rivalry of them all, but there's a lot more stretching back from even the 60's or 70's. In Cape Town there was also the rivalry and derby between Cape Town City and Hellenic(unfortunately the latter is now a defunct club, while City is still in existence and back in top-flight after a long hiatus). My dad used to have season tickets to both clubs in the late 60's when they played at Hartleyvale Stadium and the old Green Point Stadium, and even then both clubs did have quite a few high-profile names representing them. Hellenic unfortunately went bust in the early 2000's in its top-flight form, and at the time City wasn't even in that league. Since then, only teams in Cape Town that did feature prominently was Ajax Cape Town(yes a feeder club for THE Ajax Amsterdam), and Santos(nothing related to the one Neymar played in Brazil for) that since then got relegated while Ajax Amsterdam sold the naming rights of their feeder club(they're now known as Cape Town Spurs which actually used to be their former name prior to the Ajax involvement). Meanwhile Cape Town City returned to top-flight.
Now as someone myself who has been going to a number of football matches in Cape Town since the early 2000's involving City, Ajax CT etc, I can tell you that whenever either Pirates or Chiefs come to town, it's one of the most bizarre things to see how their fans a lot of times outnumber the local team's supporters by sometimes three or four times. Now Cape Town City for example currently play in the Cape Town Stadium which seats just under 60 000 spectators, and in some occasions the majority of that seats could get sold out just because it's one of the two Soweto giants, where in a lot of other games when they aren't involved, the home team might get a few thousand fans at their games. Chiefs and Pirates literally got fans all over the country, and it is also the most popular football jerseys from local teams you do get to see here.
reading about Hellenic really brought a smile to my face. I remember also those derbies between Cape Town Spurs and Santos back in the early 90's.
I appreciate you doing South Africa bro Was not expected
Need more of these videos! Seeing derbies from a countries who aren't particularly football powerhouses is great way to learn about the game.
That was fantastic, as a lifelong Chiefs fan I learnt more from this video than my 16 years of supporting them🇿🇦🔥🍒
Haha, yes! What was your favourite piece of insight in the episode?
Loved the way you pronounced Motaung, you did it as close to a native as possible. Great episode.
this is perfect I would love to see more of African football rivalries
raja casablanca and wydad casablanca are kinda the same too since raja was created from wydad

As a Pirates fan this was very well done. Thanks, Adrian
Which part was your favourite?
@@Goalloungetv I didn't know that Chiefs was a break away from Pirates, I just knew that Kaizer Motaung was a former Pirates playey, that was interesting. How about you?
@@ebenezermemani4097 Yeah, that was interesting fact.
We had no idea how similar the Kaizer Chiefs logo is to it's inspiration...that was fun to see. Good thing copyright laws are different in SA. 👀😂
Been an Orlando Pirates fan since age 6! Love from South Africa!! Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this!
perfect timing, just finished yesterdays ucl vid
I grew up in Orlando, FL and when I was a kid I used to think Orlando Pirates were from here. I used them in FIFA all the time. I knew they weren't MLS or anything but maybe a smaller minor league or something. Obviously I found out they were from South Africa shortly after. I'm pretty sure the local Champs Sports in the mall also thought the same thing. They sold Orlando Pirates soccer balls up near the cash register.
the information i didn't know i needed but glad i got it!!
This was fantastic Adrian. Loved it. It's amazing how much the rivalry stories are similar in most places. In Tanzania (East Africa), there is one of the biggest rivalry that has the nation in two. As much as one is Male and Female, you are expected to either be a Simba or Yanga fan out here. Even people running other clubs in the league, are fans of one of the two teams. The stories are really similar to this, well with a bit more politics involved over here in their origin. Simba got destroyed by Kaizer two years ago, and it was the first time I (and most Tanzanians really), got to experience the south African style of football. Masters of set pieces, and running the wing. All in all, loved the episode, more please.
Been waiting for this one for long! Once A Pirate Always A Pirate☠️
Please do Turkey / Brazil or Argentinian club rivalries next lol lol ... always been interested seeing army tanks outside derby matches , would be cool knowing the history behind it
YES LFG ROOTS OF THE RIVALRY IS BACK
