When I was in school, we still had the 4 Food Groups. The pyramids and the plate hadn't been invented yet. Milk Meat Bread Fruits/Vegetables (one group) That last group included SO much, like beans and potatoes. I remember, back then, Margarine was called butter, and was considered good for us. Fats were just part of all the groups, and sugar was just considered a seasoning, so it didn't really count anywhere. A healthy well rounded meal could be pork chop, biscuits or cornbread with margarine, baked potato with margarine and sour cream, and a glass of kool-ade because it had extra vitamin C. Chocolate milk was fine and did not count as extra sugar, because sugar did not count anywhere. As confusing as the pyramids could be, I do think they were a step in the right direction.
Exercise _also_ reduces hunger. The problem with the association with exercise and weight loss is that you have to run a marathon or so to burn the calories you ingest in a single cup of black coffee. People overestimate how many calories they're burning, thinking they can reward themselves with highly-caloric treats. But being moderately physically active is very healthy even if it doesn't make you lose weight directly.
Run a marathon to burn the calories of one cup of black coffee, are you serious? According to internet black coffee with no added sugar has about 1 calorie, while running a marathon burns around 2000 to 3500 calories or more, depending on factors like your bodyweight and metabolism. Its not even close
I remember back in the 80s, learning about the four food groups. I think the idea was that you should eat two things from milk, bread and meat groups, and four things from the fruit/vegetable group... (or was one of them three things? I forget.) Peanut butter was considered "meat group" because of protein, and anything with a lot of sugar was considered "junk." I don't know if there was any science behind it, but it seemed like it was working... sort of.

I just want to point out that olive and sunflower oils which this video said were healthy are not monosaturated, but monoUNsaturated and they're only healthy so long as you don't cook with them at high temperatures. Anyone using unsaturated fats to cook with are basically turning the oils rancid at which point it'd be better for you to cook with a saturated fat, or monounsaturated at a low heat. Better yet, just don't add oil to your cooking but, anyways...
USA kind of lagging behind rest of the world when it comes to teaching nutrition apparently.. I didn't even realise you guys only started using the plate model in schools so late when where I live it has been the main way to teach the nutrition as long as I've been in school(And I'm in my 20s so it's earlier than 2011) alongside of the food pyramid though ours is a bit different with vegetables and berries being on the bottom as the type of food you should eat the most. And they have been on the bottom since 1987.
To every vegan preaching down below: veganism isn't for everyone. And before you say anything about how horrible I am for eating meat: I'm vegetarian and slowly transitioning to a vegan diet. Sure if you live in larger cities/countries it may be easy to go vegan, but as someone who lives in the middle of nowhere it's not. And yes I know veganism is better for the environment, but some of ya'll are acting like veganism is the only right. If people would just eat less than 200g of meat each week, it would still help a whole lot.
Duval no it wouldn't if you use meat sparingly.vegans who start eating meat will have their cholesterol skyrocket but meat eaters who eat 100 grams of meat a week will keep their cholesterol high which leads to clogged arteries then leads to heart attacks and many more diseases.the American college of cardiology recommends full plant based diets and is suitable for all stages of life.william c Roberts claims humans are herbivores simply because only herbivores can get clogged arteries from cholesterol.humans are herbivores and one of the most respected cardiologists in the world agree with what I'm saying.and the president of the ACOC is also vegan.veganism is ethical, helps you live longer and keeps you safer from many chronic diseases.
I would love to go vegan, but my diet is entirely dependent on a college dining hall (we don’t have kitchens in our dorm halls), and the school doesn’t provide a substantial amount of vegan options besides the salad bar. I hate it when people say going vegan is so easy and that everyone can do it because that’s simply not true.
_"vegans who start eating meat will have their cholesterol skyrocket"_ Disproven bullcrap: health.clevelandclinic.org/2015/02/why-you-should-no-longer-worry-about-cholesterol-in-food/ _"but meat eaters who eat 100 grams of meat a week will keep their cholesterol high which leads to clogged arteries then leads to heart attacks and many more diseases."_ LMMFAO! 100grams a WEEK?! That's less than one "quarter-pounder" hamburger! Dude, I eat literally *25 times* that much meat in a week, and my bloodwork is exemplary. Stupid "sky is falling!" alarmist vegan claptrap that is so easily disproven. You're actively discrediting your own cause by vomiting up such nonsense for public dissemination. _Hey, thanks!_
Maranda Perez exactly! Right now you should just prioritise your health as much as possible with a diner. I've heard how expensive college is, so it's not like you could just go out and make vegan meals every day. Take care, and best of luck!
My favorite health myths are the ones perpetuated by the American dairy industry. First was the strong bones one, but then it became common knowledge that milk strips calcium from your bones. Now they're promoting it as a source of protein, which isn't inaccurate, but the last time Americans *needed* to use dairy as a main source of protein was World War II. When options like meat are universally available, you need 0 servings of milk.
It is the stupidest class and they add no new material for all middle school and high school classes. Same thing as sixth so of course we don’t pay attention.
We need to move beyond the idea that there's just one kind of healthy diet. There are a few *basically* healthy food groups, sure, but every individual has different needs. People should just accept that once in awhile they should see a nutritional counselor, just like they get their teeth cleaned or their hair done professionally sometimes.
3:56 tell that to every school I've been to which only teaches: football, volleyball and gymnastics. (And this year we did basketball for the first time) and not even teaching how to do them properly.
The reminds me of my old school, soccer was a big deal and a lot of the kids took it after school, because of that the gym teacher had us play soccer almost everyday instead of the other sports to prepare them for the upcoming soccer tournaments. But what really irked me was when a substitute came in one time an he had to constantly tell everyone the rules of the game, apparently they weren’t even playing properly the entire time.
ok I will choose tomatoes cause I eat it regularly. It is healthy but not 100% because if you eat too much the lycopene in it can give you some bad symptoms such as stomach pains and heartburn. You see I'm not saying that 'nothing is healthy' i'm saying that it is not 100% but it it is still healthy
Maxhunter 5353 Yeah but it takes an astronomical amount of vegees or fruits for them to become unhealthy, which is not the case with most other foods. Nobody would eat that sort of amount naturally, so you would really have to go out of your way to make you sick with them. That's why it's the safest thing to assume is healthy constantly.
If you want real nutrition advice, go to the scientists that are studying food & health. For all we know everything we know about dieting is wrong, but if we ever get things right then they'll be the first to know.
Cracked of all places nailed it with this one: "the pyramid wasn't based on scientific evidence or research -- it was more about which lobbyists whined loud enough to get their particular product shuffled to a more prominent spot on the chart."--www.cracked.com/article_20217_5-well-known-tips-healthy-eating-that-dont-work_p2.html

Why not stick to Natural whole grains and nuts & dark green leafy vegetables and root vegetables and fruits like blueberries and strawberries and pomegranate and fish and deer meat , Buffalo, rabbit, grouse which is a type of game bird like pheasant. Absolutely no sweets no teas with sugar in it just all pure natural water and nothing else.
THE GUARDIAN no whole grains. Carbs raise your insulin and cause you to be hungry again faster. Eat high fat and carbs should come from dark green veggies. No carrots, corn, or potatoes
In elementary school we had a nutrition class like three times a year. One time they told us this weird story they made up about Hermione Granger's stomach and they represented her stomach with a bottle and started filling it with liquids.
Exercise often, calories in vs calories out considering body composition, and cobsuming enough micronutrients. There, 90% of obesoty related health risks are gone.
I think that this video is well guided, but I think that there are a few problems in your initial analysis of the pyramid. You cite the processed foods as linked to higher rates of diabetes, etc., but that’s correlation and not causation, i.e. its linked, but you’re not proving that processed foods necessarily cause diabetes. This is a little weird, because I believe (not totally sure though) that there are studies proving causation. Fitness-wise, the point was to enforce the unarguable importance of being active, versus the sedentary lifestyles that plague average office jobs. I think that their goal to encourage activity, regardless of what kind of activity, was a net good thing.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure a school would get in trouble if its Phys. Ed. program was explicitly about weight loss. I know there's an obesity epidemic, but those lifestyle patterns are 95% not being learned at school.
Fact check: plant oils don’t lower cholesterol. Those studies were set up where animal fats were replaced by plant fats which will reduce cholesterol but they’re not healthy. The grain part of the chart should stay large, but potatoes and legumes should be moved to grain, dairy eliminated completelycuz we don’t need it. Protein should be lowered because a 2000 calorie diet of pure whole wheat products supplies 80 grams of protein (missing amino acids but that’s not my point). We get proteins from everything on that list so they don’t need to be an extra category. Also chicken and fish aren’t healthy they’re high in cholesterol which is the cause of the #1 fucking killer and were worried about protein deficiency. Omega threes should naturally be converted but unhealthy and old bodies can’t. Fats have 9 cals per gram while carbs have 4. CARBS DONT MAKE YOU FAT! ITS HARD TO EAT 2000 CALS OF WHOLE LEGUMES VEGGIES AND FRUITS ADD GRAINS AND YOU GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT!
I wen to Elementary school wen we had the original good pyramid and then it got changed, and then I think we used the plate thing maybe in like 5th and 6th grade, but I didn't have health class in either of those grades.
I graduated in 2002 and in my high school health class, we didn't deal with the food pyramid at all. If anything it was closer to the plate. More fruits and veggies than whatever your meat and breads were. Exercise and get enough sleep.
I had no idea the food pyramid was replaced by MyPlate! Guess I’m still living in the 90s lol we use myplate at the food pantry I worked at and I thought it was just for food pantries or something
The reason they dont show oils on myplate is because you need such little oils to get what you need, and you will get it in all the foods you eat throughout the day, and I'm in health class right now and were have learned all of this.
Around the start of my freshman health class our health teacher was fired. For the rest of the year we were stuck with a sub that did next to nothing to help us learn anything health-related. It was actually kind of disappointing...
guide to weight loss if you’re really lazy 1. Every time you drink, drink water. Don’t waste calories on soda. 2. Fats aren’t too bad, but get your fat from healthy options like avocado or peanut butter. 3. Eat vegetables at least everyday. Vegetables are very high in fiber which can help you lose weight. 4. Swap you’re favorite snacks with fruits. 25 strawberries is only 100 calories!! 5. And lastly, exercise everyday, even if it’s just a 15 minute walk.
I am a skinny 14 year old vegan but this doesn't mean that I am unhealthy, infact, I can run at a top speed of more than 32 km/hr. GPS speedometer showed that I can run at a top speed of 32 km/hr but once it also showed a max speed of 34 km/hr but since it's not quite accurate that's why I rejected the later speed as my highest. And please don't call a skinny guy on the street or somewhere weak and unhealthy because this body hides something.
Too complicated and unclear for most people, perhaps even for nutritionists. But it would be ideal. I suspect most people recommending a certain diet arent considering nearly enough factors, but they probably even can't with their current knowledge.
Another school myth? Gym classes. They actually don't reduce obesity rates. Watch here: czcams.com/video/t5SdcURGol8/video.html

At my school you are graded on tests. Here are the stats
Mile:
12:00Fail
10:00 D
9:00 C
8:00 B
7:00- A
Most kids are between 9-12.
Pacer (now banned for cruelty, athletic kids do like 100 and pass out) each lap is 50m approximately (might be wrong
0-10F
10-14D
15-20C
20-25B
25+ A
Pacer test is reasonable. I suck at running and I have managed a 35 before.
Flexibility, sit and reach by inches past your toes, one leg at a time.
0 or less F
0-5 D
6-10C
11-15B
16+A
This varies but I’m very very flexible so I don’t care as much.
Pushups, as many as you can in a minute
0-5 F
6-10 D
11-15 C
16-20 B
21+ A
Situps are the same as pushups but double every number
Honestly the mile is what kills everyone. Average moderately athletic kid does between 8-10, and the non athletic kids are worse. The rest aren’t terrible standards.
When I was in school, we still had the 4 Food Groups. The pyramids and the plate hadn't been invented yet.
Milk
Meat
Bread
Fruits/Vegetables (one group)
That last group included SO much, like beans and potatoes.
Looks like problem is with "experts" who haven't managed to figure out anything.
Black coffee has zero calories..
"Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants" -Michael Pollan
I remember back in the 80s, learning about the four food groups. I think the idea was that you should eat two things from milk, bread and meat groups, and four things from the fruit/vegetable group... (or was one of them three things? I forget.) Peanut butter was considered "meat group" because of protein, and anything with a lot of sugar was considered "junk." I don't know if there was any science behind it, but it seemed like it was working... sort of.
The best advice I ever got was to eat a whole food, plant-based diet. This is my other favorite: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.
These are myths I never learned because I'm homeschooled. Thank goodness for that.
There’s a different banana at the end!
i'm more concerned about this than I should be :0
Someone ate it halfway through filming the video becuause they were too hungry
This wasn’t really a video about myths... just about how the food pyramid is wrong
I took marching band for the pe credit. Worst mistake ever to think it would be easier, but I like marching band.
Is it true what they say about band camp? ;-)
bcubed72 Not that I've seen, but I haven't gone anywhere shady because I'm usually crying on the ground and nursing a blister the size of Manhattan.
Only the weak and undetermined cant handle marching band
A Bird Lover
Buy your band shoes a month before, and break 'em in by walking a half mile a day, every day, until they fit properly. Leather forms to your foot: uncomfortable as hell until it does so.
bcubed72 I just said that for the joke, I was actually one of the few freshmen to not get any blisters! I still have scars on the back of my heels from where the dinkles rubbed the skin off though, so I didn't get out unharmed.
Correct. As I commented previously, there's little scientific credibiilty to this video.
My high school had a health teacher that got suspended because he got caught smoking in his car on campus
_"vegans who start eating meat will have their cholesterol skyrocket"_
Disproven bullcrap: health.clevelandclinic.org/2015/02/why-you-should-no-longer-worry-about-cholesterol-in-food/
_"but meat eaters who eat 100 grams of meat a week will keep their cholesterol high which leads to clogged arteries then leads to heart attacks and many more diseases."_
LMMFAO!
Take care, and best of luck!
bcubed72 THANK YOU!!!
Honestly 100g is like... nothing. I feel like if that makes your cholesterol skyrocket you need to see a doctor.
My school used all three of those models and I was very confused about it.
We had a food pyramid in the 80's too.
(And this year we did basketball for the first time)
and not even teaching how to do them properly.
The reminds me of my old school, soccer was a big deal and a lot of the kids took it after school, because of that the gym teacher had us play soccer almost everyday instead of the other sports to prepare them for the upcoming soccer tournaments. But what really irked me was when a substitute came in one time an he had to constantly tell everyone the rules of the game, apparently they weren’t even playing properly the entire time.
basically theres no food that's 100% healthy tbh
name one
Maxhunter 5353 ANY fruit and vegetable
ok I will choose tomatoes cause I eat it regularly. It is healthy but not 100% because if you eat too much the lycopene in it can give you some bad symptoms such as stomach pains and heartburn. You see I'm not saying that 'nothing is healthy' i'm saying that it is not 100% but it it is still healthy
kale
"Kids need to be more active!" *kids go walk to the neighborhood park (with parent's permission) to play * "Arrest the parents for neglecting their kids! Something could have happened to them! Such awful parents!"
0:44 "Jesus answered 'It is written: 'man shall not live on bread alone' ' " Luke 4:4 WE WERE WARNED!!! JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF WARNED US ABOUT THIS SHIT BUT DID WE LISTEN!?!?!? *NO!!!!!!!!*
11 servings of Pasta?
That’s a normal Italian Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Dinner, and Desert.
I am 14 and remember learning the last two foodpyramids
I just eat whatever I wish to eat
Aadil Parack yay! Im not the only one!
Health class should teach people how to research health, so they can stay up to date with research and not fall for fads.
This channel teaches me more than I learn in an entire school year
Eggs have never been "brought back to the table", there was one study done by an egg company claiming eggs are healthier than egg Mc'muffins and it blew up in the media.
THE GUARDIAN yup
No TEA??! YOu good sir have CROSSED the LINE I throw down my HAT at your FEET, I hope queen Victoria BANISHES you to AUSTRALIA!
THE GUARDIAN no whole grains. Carbs raise your insulin and cause you to be hungry again faster. Eat high fat and carbs should come from dark green veggies. No carrots, corn, or potatoes
Yuck
Because that shits expensive.
Life is tough for the residents of one of Tucson's many trailer parks
Oil is bad for you no matter the form. They only lower cholesterol in those studies because they were replacing butter, but they still raise it.
In elementary school we had a nutrition class like three times a year. One time they told us this weird story they made up about Hermione Granger's stomach and they represented her stomach with a bottle and started filling it with liquids.
My charter school got rid of the semester-long mandatory health class for 9th graders starting my freshie year...
*MY plate = 1/3 beans/quinoa, 1/3 meat, and 1/3 salad or veggies*
Exercise often, calories in vs calories out considering body composition, and cobsuming enough micronutrients. There, 90% of obesoty related health risks are gone.
The title should be top 10 ways to roast your health class teacher
I grew up with My Pyramid but in high school switched to My Plate.
WoodStuff _
Processed meat is a carcinogen
That means it causes cancer
+Jesus Christ So is sunlight.
Exercise is good whether it makes you eat more or not
uh ok I try my best lol
in italy we teach kids about the meditareanean diet where fruit and vegestables are at the base of the pyramid
Haha to this day (from what I know) my elementary school still has that damned food pyramid hanging in the cafeteria in all its fake glory.
I wen to Elementary school wen we had the original good pyramid and then it got changed, and then I think we used the plate thing maybe in like 5th and 6th grade, but I didn't have health class in either of those grades.
Those broccoli fingers will be present in my nightmares
Only by helping others can we become truly healthy...ie. service as a way of life...
I graduated in 2002 and in my high school health class, we didn't deal with the food pyramid at all. If anything it was closer to the plate. More fruits and veggies than whatever your meat and breads were. Exercise and get enough sleep.
Wow what beautiful violin music at the end
I had no idea the food pyramid was replaced by MyPlate! Guess I’m still living in the 90s lol we use myplate at the food pantry I worked at and I thought it was just for food pantries or something
Welp.... that’s that. I’m homeschooling my future children. Trust no one.
So, are you gonna get them vaccinated?
In the U.K. we have P.E and P.S.H.E where learn about health, the H in P.S.H.E stands for health
The reason they dont show oils on myplate is because you need such little oils to get what you need, and you will get it in all the foods you eat throughout the day, and I'm in health class right now and were have learned all of this.
I was taught the food pryamid, the 90's one in Elementary. (This was mid/late 2010's!)
...I was born in december 2005, and I was still taught the food pyramid 🤨🤔
Around the start of my freshman health class our health teacher was fired. For the rest of the year we were stuck with a sub that did next to nothing to help us learn anything health-related. It was actually kind of disappointing...
In UK we used to have the eatwellplate but it was replaced with the eatwellguide which is decent but still not perfect
Hey everyone who came here expecting some inappropriate health stuff leave... Its all about food pyramids.
“The government agency that created these guidelines is the USDA, whose sole purpose is to promote the food industry”
*Internal screaming*
When you like a comment but it's 8 months old
And you like your own comment because no one will see it
When your school is cheap and they still have the health books from the ‘80s
I was still learning about the food pyramid in 2010! 2010! Both the old *and* new one.
Reminder that there was a "anti protein" fad where they would try to remove the protein from food cus they thought it was bad
guide to weight loss if you’re really lazy
This is just another opinion doomed to become fact u have to take what these people say with a grain of salt learn to form your own opinions
Who else is here because there chrome book is restricting the video when you have to watch for a class assignment?
health is the only class when you can write a song on a test and teacher will give you a+
So just eat what ever you want as long as you balance it with energizing
Did you pay attention at all?
What about varying the amount and type of food per person not restriciting and allowing certain foods for all people
Too complicated and unclear for most people, perhaps even for nutritionists. But it would be ideal. I suspect most people recommending a certain diet arent considering nearly enough factors, but they probably even can't with their current knowledge.
I was taught the food pyramid in the late 2000s. Never memorised it anyway.
