Budget Cottage Pie With A Money Saving HACK!

  • Cottage pie is one of my all time fave comforts foods. It is the perfect delivery system of carbs, salt and fat, and as the nights get colder, nothing hits the spot like a warming cottage pie. The problem is, it can get out of hand ingredients wise and can actually become quite expensive. As you will have seen, I have a cottage pie recipe from about 5 years ago during better times, which contained hand chopped beef, red wine and all sorts of lovely stuff. This recipe however, is a stripped back version that's more in keeping with the cost of living crisis we are all facing. It's cheap, but it's still very tasty, and i'm using a little hack to save you some money too!
    #cottagepie #budgetrecipes #costofliving
To make my budget cottage pie with a twist you will need:
    ►500g minced beef
    ►1 stick of celery
    ►1 med onion
    ►1 med carrot
    ►1 clove of garlic
    ►1 bay leaf
    ►About 550ml of beef stock
    ►1-2 tbsp of Worcester sauce
►About 2 tbsp of beef gravy granules (use your favourite)
►A couple of handfuls of frozen peas
►Enough hash browns to cover the top (I used 7)
►Onion and chive cheese to top (optional, and use your favourite)
    ►Salt & pepper
Some prices of some items to help you shop cheaper *as of 18/9/2022
    Lidl
    ►500g beef mince £1.79
    ►Beef gravy granules £0.85
    ►Frozen has browns £1.15
    ►Worcester sauce £0.65
    ►Beef stock cubes £0.52
    ►Frozen peas £0.59

Never had hash browns on the top of cottage pie but I have used potato croquettes, or tatty tots to our American friends. I like the idea of the hash browns. I also sometimes use mashed vegetables, like swede and carrot or a garlicky mashed cauliflower. Not quite as cheap and convenient but very delicious. Thanks Adam xxx

I am glad you have cleared up - perhaps - the English pronunciation (has its own different ways of pronoucing it) of the English word 'Shire' to our American cousins as it is attached to areas or parts of the British Isles. Pleas apply your magic to Kirkudbright and almost every Welsh name.
I was going to mention that Hash Browns and similar are probably more expensize weight for weight than Potatoes but you emphasised the Energy parameter. I have Potato (frozen of course) in place of the Hash Browns which are important to me for my breakfast. 🙂

Alternative topping: root veg mash. Use swede or cauli (or both) and make a batch for freezing because there'll be more than needed for this dish. These veg are often really cheap* and with dishes like this, they pass muster easily - the cheese and the beefy sauce make the mash little more than a filling flavour conveyor. *Look for those packs of roasting veg some supermarkets do.

I often make a batch of Cottage or Shepherd pies, then eat one and freeze the rest. (My other half is a Pescatarian). But like most, I have never tried hash browns. (I usually use frozen mash.) So, onwards and upwards, hash browns, here we came. What a great idea young Adam! PS. I often get frozen ones from Aldi for only 75p! That, half a small tin of processed peas @ 37p per small tin, and some onion gravey granules. Yum!

That looks different with the hash browns I might try that way , I usually top mine with Idahoan mash it’s nice and buttery and so easy to just mix up and plonk on top and peak up with a fork .

    Looks extra scrummy, Adam! 👍🏻😋
I'd love to cook this, but I'd have a couple of problems doing so:
    1. I've got an electric cooker, which has a separate griller, (i.e., not in the oven, but directly underneath the hob), but there's no way I could possibly fit the baking dish under the grilling element, due to a serious lack of space in the tiny cavity provided), and the oven itself has no upper (or grilling) element.
    2. None of the frozen hash browns available at my local supermarket are the same (or similar) triangular shape as those ones you got from Lidl. My solution to this problem might be to use something we Australians call *_"Potato Gems,"_* which are very similar to something that Americans call *_"Tater Tots."_* (I don't know if you have anything similar in the UK, but I imagine you probably do), and maybe these could be used to cover the top completely. They could easily be arranged in such a way as to fill in all the gaps, which might help to reduce the amount of gravy leaking up through the top. Cost-wise, they are comparable with hash browns, at least they are in Australia.
I'd be interested to have your opinion on my proposed solution to Problem #2! 🙂

It's funny because when I was coming up with this recipe I'd considered tater tots. The only reason I switched to hash browns is because they are much more readily available here in the UK. But absolutely they would work the same. The key is getting the mix just the right thickness so they don't sink. If you're not as impatient as I am you can cool the mixture completely, pop in the fridge overnight then top the next day just before baking. That helps stop gravy bubbling up

    Re hash browns:
I have never eaten hash browns at home, and while you were lucky with your choice of dish (they could have been made for it) I invariably prepare and freeze individual portions.
Do you know if it is possible to cut them to size, or do you need to defrost first to fit in different dish sizes and shapes?
Cogs working as I said they would!

    • @Adam_Garratt
      @Adam_Garratt  Před rokem +1

What I would do is either chop them up into chunks from frozen, and scatter them over your portions, or maybe use tater tots or croquettes

    LOVE hash browns! 😍
As an American, what are gravy granules? The closest I can think of is bouillon granules, maybe tossed with corn starch or tapioca powder, but I really don't know if that's similar to what you use.
Also, I love the French accent comments between the cooking segments. Very Monty Python-esque to my mind. 😍❤️😍

    • @Adam_Garratt
      @Adam_Garratt  Před rokem

Gravy granules are basically boullion with added corn flour and other stuff so it makes a thick instant gravy when hot water is added

  • @neilpickup237

Some good ideas, I would never have thought of using hash browns in that way, and have put my cogs into motion!
In times like now, I think that the pedants can go and @£&% themselves. If it tastes good and at least makes a passing resemblance to the 'traditional' that is good enough.
I would even consider using 25% pork or other 'mince' to reduce the cost.
I use low, or no salt stock cubes as you can add an extra cube to compensate for any lack of meatiness when also increasing the vegetable percentage.
I never add any thickener, preferring it as it is, so would be reluctant to use gravy granules.
I have family members with an aversion to garlic, so I started adding an extra onion, which has the advantage over garlic of bulking out, I haven't tried it, but possibly sweetcorn and your nemesis mushrooms chopped finely could 'bulk' too.
As for mash, I usually do 2.5 kg at a time, the capacity of my largest pan, and freeze any excess. They re-heat superbly if you add just a little milk otherwise they can be a little dry.
Unless you wish to mash in batches, I would strongly recommend that you invest in a potato ricer.

Agree Neil, it's all about doing the best with what we have right now. Thank you again for the suggestions, and yes potato ricers are amazing, I love mine
