I've been from Chiang Mai to Bangkok with train 3rd class hard seat... Was definitely fun, got some gifts from the locals.
For clarification...you can book upper (cheaper) or lower berths and select your seat upon booking. The later Special Express passes through Doi Khuntan Mountains and tunnel in daylight but this train does not have a restaurant car....but a better choice as it arrives a bit later in CM.
In general asian people are very friendly..arent we
In my experience not Chinese or korean but vietnamese, philippians and thailandes are really friendly

My personal preference for milkshakes (or milk based drinks) is vanilla but only because I can get away with so much e.g. adding coffee or caramel or salted caramel to get a diff flavour, I find I can't do that with most of the other flavours

I'm team Dan on the milkshake choices. Although i love actual chocolate the milkshakes always taste artificial and odd. Bon seemed like a really nice guy and very helpful with the food.

The newer trains with pink or red seats are called CNR train. You can select it when you book online.

There is always more social going economy than luxury if you meet friendly people. Just bring what you need. I would want a spray bottle of peroxide, and some anti bacterial wipes, and much prefer to save than to spend.
