  • The Kailasha Temple of the Ellora Caves is the largest monolithic structure in the world. Carved from an astonishing 500,000 tons of basalt, it is a mystery how this temple was carved with simple bronze and iron tools over a thousand years ago.
Its construction is generally attributed to the Rashtrakuta king Krishna I, who reigned between 756-774 CE. However, the lack of inscriptions makes the question of the age of the Kailasha Temple one of the great puzzles of Indian archaeology. According to a popular Marathi legend, the temple was built in a single week with the help of the god Shiva, to whom it is dedicated.
The temple is meant to represent Mount Kailash, the terrestrial abode of the god Shiva, and is replete with carvings drawn from Hindu mythology and the great epics of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

These temples are extraordinary. It is a pity they are not as well known as other famous monuments around the world.

A study of the quarry and chisel marks can reveal a lot of the methods and excavation techniques employed.

There are still many mysteries in the way the rock was carved and removed, even without invoking alien or supernatural intervention. The lack of tools and heaps of discarded materials is perplexing.
