    It's probably a Baxandall tone stack. For the nerds:
    "A Baxandall tone stack is a simple high/low shelf EQ. Bastardized versions can be found in Ampeg, Orange, Tweed Fenders, Sunn amps and more. With the controls set to 5, the frequency response is essentially flat, as opposed to a std TMB tonestack, which has a mid-scoop and bass rolloff with the controls set the same. A Bax stack is capable of essentially a mid-hump, which a std stack is unable to accomplish at any setting."

    As a devout user of the Framus Cobra, some info for watchers:
    - definitely don't use the master at 3 oclock. Keep the channel at 12-1 oclock, and use the master as the master.
    - the amp was designed for Greenbacks, so the midrange IS a little weird. But if you get it right on V30's it's quintessential metalcore
    - definitely prefers downtuned guitars IMO
    - the amp doesn't really have reliability issues, the issues are almost always a result of not having a load on the head. This head can blow real quick if the input on the cab is loose, and the Framus cabs did have kinda weak inputs. The heads are totally solid.
    - some tone tips for that PWD tone with a standard V30 (I haven't used it with a Mesa cab): Crunch or Lead with Presence, Channel Volume, Treble at 1oclock, Gain at 12 oclock, mids at 2 oclock, bass at 11 oclock, effects loop at noon. Tube screamer with standard settings.

      I have had mine for about 2 years now. I currently have to use IR load boxes because I don't have a way to mic a cab right now. I own about 4 load/ iR boxes and some analog cab sim boxes. I love it with a cab but I have to record silent right now. So I was hoping you could give me some tips on using IRs. Anything would help. it doesn't seem like many people own this amp or at least I have not run into anyone that does. I don't know if the Version matters, but I have a V2.

      Agreed. Version 2 dragon user here and the FX mix stays at noon, channel volume at 12:30, and master to taste. Messed with it for a little bit and that wound up being the best for me with my setup.

    • @alseick
      @alseick Před rokem

      It is hard to find somebody with this amp, when you are using very low volume, does gain channel sound like clean and gain channels mixed? Normally when I play amps on low volume and pick slightly, it just sounds more quiet, softer, but with Cobra I feel like there is always some distortion/fizz going on no matter whether I pick hard of soft. I think Warwick told me in theory it is possible in this design to have some bleed.
      I think this amp has quite unique top end (quite open, I am surprised this one sounds so muffled), really cool clean channel and hug, thick and yet tight low end.

    • @jrlee243
      @jrlee243 Před rokem

      @alseick to me the channel volume at a lower setting seems to have a thinner sound to it I guess mainly because the power amp is not pushing too hard. But if you go a bit over 12 o clock it starts to get thicker. I started messing with the notch switch and using a Parametric eq to pull out and add frequency to that super scooped tone it gives you. I have found some use for it now. It's tricky. When adding one thing, something else goes away. I have learned the presence and deep synergies together. To pull out some of that fizz I will back off the presence and turn the deep up. Good luck. 👍

    Hey Kyle! First off just wanted to say that I love your channel and its concept. It’s a real privilege to get to see amps like this out in the wild and with no post processing on them. I wanted to offer a suggestion, especially since we both own slanted Mesa Recto 4x12s and seem to both be passionate about mid-2000s metalcore tones: try micing one of the top speakers in the cabs as opposed to the bottom ones. You actually get a tighter low end and a more filled out, upfront midrange. I’ve seen interviews with everyone from Colin Richardson to Nolly where they advise that micing one of the top speakers in a slant cab (especially the Recto cabs) is the way to go. Anyway, hope you hit the 20K mark soon and keep producing killer content!

    I've owned V2 and V5 of these beasts. Some tips.
    1. Its the CHANNEL volume you want to crank to 3 o clock. Use the Master as a Master should be used.
    2. The EQ is active so cut/boost applies
    3. This amp is super picky with speakers. Plays the best with GB or CB type speakers. It can sound ok with V30 but it usually gets too harsh with most cabs loaded with them

It's weird because I was thinking not too long ago that you need to get one of these to demo and *POOF* here it is!! The Cobra has so much interaction between every control, that you can get some crazy shapes/tones out of it. The crunch channel always seems a little more straightforward, but on the lead channel I treat the bass/mids and treble/presence as a baxandall set (probably a better word). Pushing the channel volume up will darken the amp, as will effects running full on. I always felt like Cobra was a sibling to the rectifier with some of the goofiness. Try running the bass almost all the way up and the mids almost all the way down. On mine, it works similar to how the rectifier sounds with the treble all the way down and mids pushed up.

      in regards to the other serial numbers (the ones found on the square white piece of paper) The first letter refers to the month the amp was made. A=January, B=February, C=March, D=April, E=May, F=June, G=July, H=August, J=September, K=October, L=November and M=December. The last 2 letters are the year it was made. ie: D-099376-03 was made in April 2003.

    I had one of these briefly for about 6 months. They did fade into obscurity but they were massively popular in the late 2000s, early 2010s, when KSE was using Framus amps, both Dragons and Cobras. These amps had a reputation for sounding fantastic for metal however they also had a reputation for technical issues. The build quality was nothing to write home about honestly. Not great, not bad. From memory, there were 3 versions. V1, V3 and V5. You'd think there were 5 but from everyone I spoke to there were just 3. The latest version having stuff such as external bias points, which was a big improvement since trying to bias the amp beforehand was supposedly a nightmare for techs.
    My version was the newest one(bought around 2010, seller told me he bought it in 2004), tubes were pcb mounted instead of chassis mounted. Those are pretty much the only changes I know about. I've heard guys say the revisions sound radically different while I've heard others say they all sound like the Cobra despite tiny variances you'd expect from amp to amp in a production run. I was surprised by the complete lack of high end presence of your amp in this video though... it just sounds so low end dominant, very much giving off the blanket over the cab effect. I don't remember mine being that way. I remember it being tight as fuck with a really big low end, but I was always to get enough mids and treble to get it to sound present and not so dark.

    I have had a v2 cobra for 2 years now. And I still bang my head on the wall with it. At times it sounds so good. But sometimes it sounds horrible. When I bought mine, someone put a mod into where it changed the gain structure and ran the bias pretty hot. I kept the mod in, and bypass it so if I didn't like the stock sound I could hook it back in. I love how it sounds with my cabs but struggling with running Irs with it. I dig pretty much the same tones you dial, so if you ever get that sounding how you like it please let me know what you did. Glad to see you finally got to own one. It's a hard road but a good one. The Notch seemed pretty useless until I got catalinbread tribute parametric overdrive. Using that to cut or boost Frequency has made it a viable Feature at least to me. Good luck. Great vid.

      as you mention the fade into obscurity part of that was Warwick felt that the distributor was devaluing their product by being so aggressive with getting framus into the mainstream so they pulled back hard and that killed their momentum. This is awesome. i am reliving the 20's. 1 Dude what my speakers are showing, you dialing the eq around it all sounds brutal without compare.
    2 Framus COBRA blows mesa's completely out of the water.
    Remember 'boxy' mids to a listener were never a 'bad thing' its girth! You get a lot of usable sound in a somewhat boxy mid setup. Of course you can still dial it all out, but i am would not. i am have never discovered why a contained boxy mid is so hated. There were some awful amps in the 90s and the boxy mids were complained even i complained, but not with an amp that can maintain all and conatin a boxy mid in it's sound, the bad boxy mid amps were poorly designed solid states that began the grape vine rumors of 'boxyness' it was too boxy and that is all it had. So that is that case closed.
    Use WGS green beret and WGS dusty warring signature speakers X pattern in two 4x12's one tight mg cab one oversize mesa 3/4 back. Plug a twin stereo dual 32 band EQ rack in the FX loop. = Your unstoppable. ============
    You could also try a marshall greenback cab, marshall's own amps sound heavier and better through it. Check the Ola comparison video total proof. He used all kinds of best mics also. beyer m190, sm58 or 57, room mics, etc.

    I'd love to see you check out the Crate Excalibur. I'm about 90% sure that's what All Out War used on the For Those Who Were Crucified album--I know that's the amp Jimbo was using live and at band practice around that time, and he was definitely using it when they wrote the songs for that album. He had more than one before he left the first time, the second one after he briefly had a Mesa Boogie Mark series amp around the time they went to Europe to tour for Truth in the Age of Lies. Taras bought a Laney stack shortly before they recorded FTWWC but if I remember correctly Jesse told me they didn't use that amp on the record.

    You need to try it with greenbacks or P50E’s. Fane F25’s and Splawn Small Blocks are great too. The effects loop knob effects things, I think around 12 o’clock was the sweet spot. Mine is at the tech, channels stopped switching and I’m stuck on the crunch channel for now. Also between like 2 o’clock and full on the channel volume depending on where you like it, then set the volume with the master. These things also love EHX 12AX7’s. I only really like those in this amp and my MP-1. You really need to try one in the V1 spot at least. They’re super picky amps, worth the effort and expenses that go with it though, when you’ve got the setup and settings perfect it all comes together and the hype is understood. People don’t like them with V30’s but they sound fine, it’s just not voiced for that and needs to be set accordingly.

    So Kyle... I did some detective work. I'm not familiar with hearing a LETTER at the end of the serial number (I believe you said F0145A ??). I also doubt you pronounced an "8" like an "A" so I'm guessing you have amp F01454 and the 4 at the end looked like an A and you made a mistake? if this is true: I found pics of your amp online from before you bought it (the scratch in the tolex on the rear to the left of the midi port matches up with yours... don't ask me how I found this I just did a quick google and wound up finding what I believe is your amp very quickly.. not my intent but what ever.. If this is the case then the serial number on the square white paper should read B 23196 05 and you have a Version 5 Framus Cobra from 2005. If I'm way off please let me know and I'll help find you some answers. If the serial number was F01458 it's still a version 5.
    For the record, the famous Adam D cobra that recorded all of those records we know and love was a version 2 and I will NOT be sharing the serial number ;)
