🌲 Introduction: The Forest Research Institute (FRI), located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, is a renowned institution dedicated to forestry research, education, and training. Let’s delve into the rich history and natural beauty of this remarkable place.
🌳 Historical Roots:
Founded in 1878 as the “Forest School of Dehradun,” it later became the “Imperial Forest School” in 1884 under the guidance of Dietrich Brandis.
In 1906, it was reestablished as the Imperial Forest Research Institute by the British Imperial Forestry Service.
Today, FRI stands as one of the oldest institutions of its kind in India.
🌱 Natural Beauty:
Nestled amidst lush greenery, FRI boasts a stunning campus with British colonial architecture.
Explore the botanical garden, home to diverse plant species, and visit various museums, including Entomology, Timber, Pathology, Silviculture, and Non-Forest products12.
The serene surroundings make it an ideal place for learning and research.
🌿 Educational Visit:
During my recent visit, I had the opportunity to explore FRI’s museums, the institute plays a crucial role in training Indian Forest Service cadres and State Forest Service cadres.
🌎 Dehradun’s Gem:
FRI’s contribution extends beyond India; it has influenced forest management across the entire Indian subcontinent.
In 1991, it was declared a deemed university by the University Grants Commission4.
