Lefkada or Lefkas is an island in the Ionian Sea and together with the islands of Corfu, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Zakynthos, and Paxos constitute the Region of the Ionian Islands. It is the fourth largest island of the Ionian Islands with an area of 320 sq.km. and the fourth in population with about 23,000 inhabitants.
Due to its geographical location (its coasts are very close to those of mainland Greece which are separated by the historic strait of Drepanos) it is connected to Etoloakarnania by a floating bridge about 20 meters long. Together with Evia are the two unique islands in Greece to which access is by road.
It took its name from Cape Lefkata, which in ancient times was called Lefkas petra or Lefkas akra. Formerly it was called Agia Mavra, from the homonymous church that was built inside the castle of Agia Mavra, a castle model of fortification art.
The island of Lefkada offers a wide variety of secluded natural beaches to popular beaches with bars and activities such as paragliding or kitesurfing. From white pebble beaches to sandy beaches, and from beaches with big waves in shallow water ideal for families and children.
The beaches on the west side of the island are really impressive thanks to their deep blue color and amazing landscapes with steep and huge rocks that form natural islands in the sea. The beaches on the east side are protected from the wind and are usually calm and safe are preferred by families with young children.
Lefkada has the three best beaches in the Mediterranean according to online referendums (Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma). Porto Katsiki, the famous beach is considered the best beach in the Mediterranean and among the ten best in the world. It takes your breath away from the very first glance. Steep white cliffs over the beautiful sandy and turquoise waters.
The beach at Kathisma is large, the waters are turquoise and the sand is white. All this in combination gives the visitor a magical image.
The beach at Egremos is really impressive, long and sandy surrounded by impressive cliffs. The landscape is dreamy and access to the beach is by descending 420 steps. The beach offers its guests crystal clear waters and impressive landscapes. A beach with a wild and at the same time rocky landscape that will undoubtedly take your breath away.
Lefkada is the diamond of the Ionian, one of the most impressive islands of Greece due to the special beaches with its unreal turquoise waters.
