- I am proud to present Justin Spittle, a super high energy waterman from New South Wales in Australia.
Justin got into mat surfing and bodysurfing due to a back injury that prevented him from popping up on a surfboard. After getting a surfmat, Justin realises that riding one of those "blow up pool toys" is way more challenging than it looks. With sheer persistency, he learned the dance of the mat, how essential the right fins are and how to control the hell out of the unusual surf craft.
"The Dance Of The Mat" is the fourth episode of a series of surf videos that tell intimate stories about people who pursue surfing in a different way and with non-standard wave riding tools.

Yep One of those indescribable feelings that you only ever get if you are the one experiencing them in one of the purest forms of surfing.
Love it as kids we rode everything in Hawaii from pillow cases full of air to mats, drift wood whatever we could get... This was an every day use with paipo boards back in 60's 70's so good to see Mahalo
Thanks for your vid..I just bought a 4th Gear Flyer. Can't wait to ride it.
I met this guy after watching this. We regularly mat surf together on the Victorian south coast and he is the nicest bloke you will ever meet.
Hey Justin. Swervin’ on the mat.... Skrrt! Skrrt!
🤙😎
Thanks for sharing. Your story is inspiring for those with back pain.
Great story- thanks
I gotta try it. It's makin' me smile.
Go for it!
Love this video and the others. Just took my mat out of the closet :) Have been out 3 times on it; I feel like I need about an hour on it to get it down, and I'm getting it in 3 second increments. Thanks for the inspiration!
Starting to ride a mat definitely needs patience. In my case it took more than 5 sessions before I got a glimpse of what makes the mat so special. When I started riding them I mixed mat surfing with riding a log. After I while I just rode the mat more and eventually I completely stoped riding surfboards. For me it is the best surf craft there is. Give it some time :)
Fantastic video hypto is a absolute legend in the ocean and a great fella all round!
Yes, Justin is a very nice guy and a lot of fun to be around :)
Love this!!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
What a great vid. Full of stoke. Just got a mat, battling with rotator cuff issues, but realising it’s all good. 👍🏽
Cool video! I'm over in Baja California Surf and pretty bummed about how bad I am. Not now! Inspired!
any tips for kicking well in fins? I'm coming from stand-up surfing & the learning curve is challenging (& satisfying)! thank you!
Nice I have been surfing mat awhile all over the world. Especially when I need to rest, it is so easy once you learn to trim but easier to say than done. It is a perfect combo to any board and it is so fast.
Yes, mats are a great way to expand your quiver and the experience of surfing. Stay stoked :)
Love this video. My mat is usually my second session surf craft. Maybe I need to promote it to number 1.
I'm glad you enjoyed to video. Yes, your mat deserves a promotion :)
Thanks Justin, have just ordered a pair of Duck Feet fins. Tried my surf mat at UrbnSurf in Melbourne - the wave (Intermediate) suits surf mats really well, helping me improve my skills. Had a few funny looks of course!
Good to hear. I have yet to try a wave pool. There's nothing wrong with some funny looks ;-)
Nice personality, he also seems to be a quite competent surf mat rider 🤙
I just got to know the Instagram profile FRINGESURFER and immediately came to the CZcams channel. I've already subscribe here and I'm totally in love with these videos. I am watching each one of them. You are doing an amazing job! Mahalo 🌊
Thanks for your kind words. It makes me very happy to hear that you love the videos :)
@@FRINGESURFERTV I'm waiting for new videos. Love the footage. Beautiful
@@ElaNoMar I am putting some finishing touches on the next video right now. It's coming soon :)
@@FRINGESURFERTV Great!
Oh man. I just got a mat and took it out a couple of times. It’s been frustrating! Need to put more time in on it. Hoping to get at least a couple waves to keep me interested in it. I haven’t even got the one good wave to make you want to come back to do it again. You make it look so easy. I’m here to say that it definitely isn’t. Not at first anyway. Great video! It’s inspiring me to get back out there again. Thanks.
It took me between 5-10 sessions to get some waves before I felt the mat was starting to take off. And it took me many more sessions before I could get this kind of waves consistently. In my opinion, it is this initial learning curve, why so many surfmats end up in the closet and not in the ocean where they belong and thrive.
You just have to be persistent, as Justin describes in the video. It's totally worth it, give it some time :)
@@FRINGESURFERTV Ok. Thanks! That’s good to hear. Looks so fun and I really want to make it work. I’ll keep at it.
@@FRINGESURFERTV I’ve been out on the mat 4 of the last 5 days. Catching waves consistently now! This video has been an inspiring!
@@jmceachern36 Great to hear that you are progressing! Check out my last video: "The Intricacies of Mat Surfing ... in a Nutshell" for more inspiration :)
I want one surfmat😅
Back 1960 they floating Matt
Which one was Matt?
Bogeyboards with slick bottoms also have more speed and control .
Only if the wave is powerful enough. A booger will never catch a surf mat on a less critical wave and I know that as I have spent considerable time on both.
I support anyone who wants to get in the water and however they want to do it. I kneeboard surf. People with physical problems that keep them standup surfing should try a kneeboard. Even if you bellysurf it you will have more speed and control and be able to ride fast breaking waves.
I don't get it what's a wive?😁
Why not a bodyboard?
Because a surfmat behaves and feels differently. A mat is like an air cushion between you and the wave. It's pliable and adjusts itself to the water surface. It's a different experience of frictionless glide. Some people prefer that :)
@@FRINGESURFERTV well is an option too. You should try bellyboards too. The feeling is awesome. Is like bodysurfing but with a thin wood board with a lot of flex. Also you can glide really fast across the face of the wave and pass all the sections. Perfect for long waves and tubes. It doesn't matter what you ride, the important is too have fun out there 🤙🤙
Keep them from standup surfing
