- I wanted to share with you my Prix St. George test from last weekend on Kensington. I love competing - mostly because I love spending tons of time with my horses - but also because it is a measure of the progress in the training. I got Kensington as a green broke 5 year old and he has come a long, long way. He has not been the easiest horse to train as he is is very sensitive but internalizes and hides his emotions.
Anyway, I am so proud of how far he has come and in this video I talk through my Prix St. George test. Please remember that competing is all about having fun and enjoying your horse. It's all about the journey and remember to be proud of how far you've come and what you're accomplished.

I personally find these the most useful videos . Hearing from you what you were thinking and feeling and trying to do it correct is super useful and much better than videos where people just tell you what to do , but not how . I rewind and know what to look for etc. Thank you for your openness and sharing, as authentic performances with errors and room for improvements are the best learning tool and I appreciate you putting this out there. Great performance though , congratulations !

Congratulations!! I have same extended walk issues for same reasons! Yes do more videos like this. I did 2 classes-first time at third 2 last week. We had our imperfections but my mare got through separation anxiety, survived 3 major wind dust storms and about 30 feet of pvc fencing blowing over behind her and still went in and listened to me in the tests! Listening had been another issue We got our flying changes in one test (although a bit exuberant!)...I was so surprised that I forgot my 20 m. Canter circle! Got 63.5. I wanted better but all in all the weekend was a success.

This video was very helpful with your play by play comments. I have ridden on and off for years, and finally found a great small barn in Sebastopol, CA (Apple Creek!) where I try to spend as much time as possible. I decided to re-learn riding, this time bareback, after years of being too reliant on my reins, stirrups, crop, etc. I have to say that I love having better balance and more "feel" for my horse. I use a bareback pad, more for his comfort than mine, and we ride with bitless bridles as well. Anyway, learning dressage bareback is a kick, and great exercise. My lesson horse is a well-schooled Arabian who's also a little sensitive. He knows lateral movements and I'm learning how to ask him for them, which is surprisingly hard. Watching you and Kensington rock it gives me hope! I spend a lot of work time peering into a microscope, so watching your videos is also great for relaxing. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your test and thoughts on it. I recently just did my first PSG test on my 15 yo mostly-trained-by-me mustang. We didn't have a perfect test but I was super proud of him, well, both of us, for getting in the ring and giving it a good shot. So, I very much appreciate seeing others' tests, especially the first attempts. TY

Congratulations! Yes, please, more videos where you talk through your ride. Loved your wrap-up, "It's not about the outcome, but the journey, so do your best and be happy with the results." Yes, yes yes. Also, as I recently heard from a judge and clinician, "Low scores are a wake-up call." We can use those disappointing scores as a baseline to help us improve, but clearly, you and Kensington did not have that problem.

Amazing commentary! As a beginner, I tihnk these would help me - especialy combined with the use of slow-motion and zooming into the movement when pointing mistakes! (or correct vs incorrect side-by-side explanations! :)

How should you ride to beat get your horse to use the corners?
I get marked down constantly for not riding my corners, ugh 😣
You need to have your horse bending in their ribcage to be able to ride your corners, how deep you go into them depends on the level that you are riding at.
Hi Amelia, I love your videos as you keep things simple. With this video, think it would be useful if you could ride the test again (sorry) and record what you are thinking at the time. So if the move is C trot then half pass to X, what are you thinking as you ride it? When are you half halting, or moving shoulder. What do you do with your seat etc. I know it's a big ask but it would be really helpful. Xxxxxxx (lots of kisses to butter you up!!)
haha I do that with my test videos; but I haven't done it for this level yet.
Was the shoulderin a four track or three track? It looked like it had a lot of slant. Just wondering if PSG requires that much slant.
Shoulder in is a 3 track movement, sometimes the angle of the camera makes it look more or less. And remember, it's not the slant that defines a shoulder in, it's the bend in the body :)
I notice your right ankle/foot is always very active compared to the left - is that for this horse specifically?
It is helping him to activate the weaker side and encouraging to bend.
Do you ever get stepped on? I did today. I feel better when really good horse people sometimes get the foot stomped on too.
Not typically, I tend to teach my horses to stay out of my space. But it can happen to even the best riders/horse people.
