  • The Spartans chronicles the rise and fall of one of the most extreme civilisations the world has ever witnessed. A civilization that was founded on discipline, sacrifice and frugality where the onus was on the collective and the goal was to create the perfect state, and the perfect warrior. Classical historian Bettany Hughes reveals the secrets and complexities of everyday Spartan life: homosexuality was compulsory, money was outlawed, equality was enforced, weak boys were put to death and women enjoyed a level of social and sexual freedom that was unheard of in the ancient world. It was a nation of fearsome fighters where a glorious death was treasured. This can be aptly demonstrated by the kamikaze last stand at Thermopylae, where King Leonidas and his warriors fought with swords, hands and teeth to fend off the Persian invaders and show the rest of the world what it meant to be Spartan. Sparta was ruthlessly militaristic and founded on a belief that good order and justice protected against chaos and lawlessness. Policed by secret spies the society was supported by a nation of slaves so all Spartan men had to do was fight. Boys were indoctrinated with the Spartan code of death and glory, separated from their mothers at seven and left to fend for themselves. It led Aristotle to comment that Sparta "turned its children into animals." The training continued throughout adolescence, the most able boys being let loose as death squads preying on the slave population to keep them quiet. It cannot lay claim to the philosophers or artists of Athens but Sparta contributed as much to western civilisation as Athens did. Indeed it was Sparta, not Athens that was the first city to offer citizenship to its inhabitants. To many, the ideals formed 2500 years ago in Sparta can be seen as a fore-runner of modern-day totalitarianism. By setting out to create a perfect society protected by perfect warriors, Sparta made an enemy of change. A collapsing birth-rate, too few warriors, rebellious slaves, and outdated attitudes to weaponry and warfare combined to sow the seeds of Sparta's destruction. Eventually the once great warrior state was reduced to a stop for Roman tourists who came to view the bizarre sado-masochistic rituals. Documentary first broadcast in 2003.

The slavers were in danger of dying at the hands of the slaves at any moment if they were not prepared. Military training was indispensable in order to maintain order and submission over the slaves. It is known that a daily raid over the slaves camp was performed as a form of training and to kill the youngest and strongest slaves. This was the fundamental reason for the entire life requirement of investing into the arts of combat and physical condition. Terror was the method of domination over the slaves.

I know enough of Sparta and each time regardless of depth and insight I confirm the profound sociopathic nature of all class divided eras and " cultures" . in particular the Spartans are anecdotal and prototype of the failed attempts of a dehumanized society to survive in a world made as their image. One of brutal animalistic clashes and devoid of love and solidarity . one of disrespect for human life and dignity. This are lessons of history to avoid and learn how a society should not be organized. Nothing more could be learned form them. If something good could be learned from that experience let me know and I'll gladly share it with any historian , archeologist and intellectual willing to use that contribution. History after all exist as a study to learn from the past more than learn the past as simple information.

Rallying the men for war is not synonomous with having an utter disregard for the ultimate waste of human life that war provides. He and the men knew that they had to fight, regardless of whether it was " a pity " or not, so without any other options you'd better double down on your passion for war or else you'll have a race of men busy contemplating "the pity of war" rather than hardening their hearts and fighting until the last man.

Xenophon born athenian but hired by the Spartans to be their cavalry chief ! He loved Sparta and made its' warhorses (and never returned to athens) ! i have a crush on him even though he's been dead about 2500 years.

Since you know about Sparta, I have a QUESTION: What did the Spartan warriors gain in death?
Other groups with warrior philosophies promised a kind of heaven to those who died in battle: Valhalla for Vikings, Janna for Muslim Jihadis.
But Greeks didn't have heaven for ordinary people, did it? Did Sparta diverge a bit from this hopelessness and offer immortality?

@@christianfrommuslim interesting question, i'll have to research it! i actually know more about Xenophon (because of horses) than I do about Sparta. I think Sparta worshipped the same Greek gods as Athens etc. My hunch (without actual knowledge on the topic) is they were probably fairly impartial about death.

@@JaneFrizzell It is just that it dawned on me while watching the series that other cultures offered an eternal personal, tangible benefit to their warriors; that perhaps I had missed something in the Spartan twist on religion - that perhaps it differed in some motivating way.
But it sounds as if the main personal gain is ceasing to exist - similar to Eastern Religions. Perhaps their lives were so difficult that non-existence sounded good?
In comparison, the Christian God combines the personal aspect of the ancient Greek gods, with an omnipresent aspect, like the Eastern concept.
He is personal like a father: he made us and wants relationship with us. He took responsibility for our errors like a father does a child's broken window, by coming to earth once to pay for those as Jesus.
But being beyond, he has the power to grant eternal life to those who accept his way.
