At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

    I like a good middle ground at 12 lbs eazy cast line which works great for the place I fish mostly river fishing on a medium action rod

    Very well said. This is one of those basic topics that is NEVER talked about, and makes an absolutely massive difference. I first learned that when trying to learn how to walk a top water, or even skipping a bait. Skipping, or walking with 20lb braid is a MILLION times easier than mono or Fluor. GREAT topic (and advice).
    *Hey, btw…. It’s off topic, but I tied on one of the Ozark rigs today, for the first time, and was testing out the movement of various plastics in my pool today. I grabbed a 7yr old bag of Gene Larew 5” Biffle Bugs just to learn how to rig it (which was more involved and specific than I thought), and of all the baits I had, that bait by FAR had the best gliding action. They all performed well to varying degrees, but there was something about the profile and tail on that bait looks incredible on that rig, I’m looking forward to trying it on the 3.5” model, with the lighter/smaller Ozark, as well. Strike Kings Space Monkey was right behind it, if you don’t separate the front appendages. You hear very little about Biffle Bugs (or Space Monkey) these days, so I wanted to pass it on to anyone looking for a good Ozark rig bait.* 👍

    Yeah man I definitely agree line diameter is huge and is something I pay way more attention to then pound test. To me it was worth the investment to pick up a few more reels that I keep in the same bag as all my line that I keep a little heavier or lighter line spooled up on that way if I feel like I need to I can just swap them out and get right back to fishing. That said I really only keep a long cast plus about 10 yards of line on my reels of the line I'm using and the rest is backing so worst case scenario I'm not losing much line if I need to change it out. Great advice and video as always keepem coming brother!!!

    @CAN43725 Před 2 měsíci +1

    With FF sonar I noticed I can control the fall rate of my wacky rigs by length of leader and diameter of line. If fish are being targeted at 10 feet or deeper, I can go with 6 to 8lb line with a 3 foot leader attached to larger diameter line. The first 3 to 5 feet my lure will fall fast until the thicker line starts to be pulled under water, then the fall rate slows the remaining feet. This slow fall in the strike zone can sometimes be a difference maker, and the initial fast fall rate saves time getting to that strike zone.

    Drenan fluorocarbon is a great example, super strong and very abrasive resistant line but their 5LB breaks my 8 LB copolymer main line on my centerpin setup like nothing. Makes me loose floats like crazy. Another thoughtful video suited for your great audience!

    I think something to mention at the same time is how different knots can effect the breaking strain of most lines with some knots making the breaking strain go down hill a lot .

    Matt take a look at Salt Strong and Line Laboratory for line tests. I have seen line diameter work both ways as some times Walleye fishing a larger line slows the drop of a Jig and Trolling lighter line can allow more action with Shad Rap #5. I am also moving away from FC as I am coming to the conclusion Mono has some advantages over FC.

    Been a line dia. watcher since the mid 70's. Read it in the BASS Magazine and it open my eyes. To keep my wife out of my stash of lines I bought her a big spool of no-name 50 pound mono for her little projects. Can't keep her out of my gear so I'll buy her her own.

    I have a Quantum smoke rod with micro line guides and 2 Quantum smoke S3 baitcaster with 7.3 with Sufix siege mono 10lbs and 14lbs on the other reel. I used the same crankbait on both line, I do feel the difference in the rod action

    I want somebody who finished the same line for every technique and I can't say I had a problem with it but I also could have been missing out on fish that I did not know that I could have caught. I also find myself going to a smaller lighter line now than before. And I never fit anything higher than 15 lb test because I never found the need to. As you said if you need to go higher than that that then you can go to braid because you're usually fishing in some s***

    Hi Matt. Still cold and very rainy up here upstate NY, river still high and muddy. Can't wait to get out. getting ready. Hey I'm just a bank fisherman . If I use 15 lb mono on the spinning reel , What weight florocarbon leader do you recommend? THANKS

    • @MattStefanFishing

      I’d recommend not using mono for a backing but using 10-20 braid to a 8 lb fluorocarbon leader. Your performance will increase dramatically

    Matt are you using a swivel and leader on the hover rig? My hover rig rod seems to be getting a lot of twists. It's 3/64 with flat worm. Thanks

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yep it will twist it’s the nature of the bait but worth it since it gets bit. I don’t use a swivel but you can if the line twists is an issue for you

      @MattStefanFishing I been using Sufix siege for two years now. It takes a lot of pressure to break on a snag. I broken worm hooks before the line break. I have broken treble hooks on snags. I use Berkley all my life, I have lost more baits than I could count
