I have lived in the area and in new Bern since1995. New Bern has definitely grown and the downtown area has improved. It shocks me to hear it is above the national average in crime. Crime is everywhere. I’ve always felt relatively safe here.

Yes I always tell people that stats don’t tell the full story. It varies by area and ultimately, it’s how you feel on your day to day.
What exactly do you mean by "property crime"? We just visited New Bern last week and it seems like a very safe place, at least in the downtown area.
Car break ins and theft! Overall, the statistics show that it is a relatively safe place to live! And it’s only getting better
