Recently, my team and I helped a student jump from a Band 6 - Band 8 in IELTS Writing Task 2. How?
We showed her how to improve her introductions!
Your introduction is the first part of your essay that the IELTS examiner will read. Therefore, you MUST make a good first impression.
In this video, I’ll compare a Band 6 and a Band 8 introduction so you can see exactly what the examiner is looking for.
I’ll also reveal the 7 things you should NEVER put in your IELTS introductions, including:
❌ A hook
❌ Cliches
❌ “High-level” vocabulary
❌ A background statement
❌ A poor thesis statement
❌ Memorised phrases
❌ The same format for all essay types
Watch until the very end where I’ll share my proven 3-step method for writing a strong Task 2 introduction!
I hope you make the most out of it :)
Chris

Here’s the question we answered in the video:
Many argue that schools are no longer necessary because children can learn so much from the internet and be educated at home.
Do you agree or disagree?
***
What to expect in IELTS Writing Task 2:
🖋️ You must write an essay in response to a question.
📋 It is important that you write 250 words or more.
⌛ You should spend around 40 minutes on this section of the IELTS test.
📝 Task 2 is worth 2/3 of your total mark for IELTS Writing.
🗝️ The key to doing well is knowing exactly what the examiners want and giving it to them.
***
How you will be assessed in IELTS Writing Task 2:
✔️ Task Achievement (25%)
✔️ Coherence and Cohesion (25%)
✔️ Lexical Resource (25%)
✔️ Grammatical Range and Accuracy (25%)

Your questions answered:
❓ Should I use personal pronouns in my essay?
📚 You should try to avoid using these, but it is fine to use them when giving your personal opinion.
❓Will using lots of idioms and phrasal verbs boost my score?
📚 No! You should not use idioms in Writing Task 2.
❓ Is it possible for me to score a Band 8?
📚 Yes! However, the average IELTS score is 5.5, so you need to work EXTRA hard to get a Band 8.
❓ How many paragraphs should I write?
📚 Four. Most IELTS Writing Task 2 essays follow the same basic four paragraph structure:
Introduction - Main Body Paragraph 1 - Main Body Paragraph 2 - Conclusion
❓ Will I lose marks if I don’t write enough words?
📚 Yes. If you don’t write at least 250 words, you will lose marks in ‘Task Achievement’ for not answering the question fully:(

I completed this whole course in a day and got to know everything that I have to take care for task 2. Bam I got 7.5 in writing which I wasn't expecting at all. Thank you Chris.
Is it ok to use relevant phrasal verbs in an IELTS essay ?
Your method is superb. I got an 8 in writing. You're definitely the best, thank you.
Great job!
How? What did u do for writing task 2?
I personally felt B is a better introduction. It was simple, comprehensible and answers the question perfectly.
👍
At first, I thought A is Band 8 because it has vocabulary and heavy words but after your explanation, I am convinced that B is more clear in easy words which is more relatable to the essay topic.
Hi Cris! You're really good at what you do. Thank you very much for helping a thousands of students from all over the world. Wish you all the best!
Thanks a million!
Absolutely, Introduction B. It's quite obvious and answers the question clearly.
Introduction A is band 6 and introduction B is band 8 because it helps the reader to understand it more clearly.
I really enjoyed this piece,I hope to apply them to the introductory part of my essay
I have seen many videos of many trainers. But this particular videos is absolutely on target as to how a person should be not just writing the essays but even communicating to people otherwise. Thank you very much.
You are very welcome!
WOW! Best video i've seen on this till now! Your advice is so good!
Introduction B is clear, simple and natural!
Thanks for wonderful information on the introduction, Chris! There are myriad of tutors out there that give misleading info as a result test takers go astray and begin to think that IELTS is challenging them. I have found only some resources reliable. They are following: IELTS advantage, Liz IELTS as well as materials by Pauline Cullen. Highly recommend for the students who are aiming to pass the exam with flying colours to learn only from these resources!
introduction B is the best , because it uses simple words and show the main idea in a clear and a direct way , also it is show the opinion of the writer clearly at the end of the essay.
I love your lessons, you are helping me to improve my English before I saw your videos and lessons I thought very differently about ielts exam and I’m very frightened but after I followed you my fear gone, you’re real teacher and psychologist , go on please
I'm so glad we have helped you overcome your fear. Just remember to always KEEP IT SIMPLE and that will really help!
Fiona Bently from now on we have to get rid from fake references .
Your teaching and guiding style is brilliant, I suppose we are misleading by following faulty advice out there in different sources, I found your's is reliable. Many thanks Chris for everything
This lesson has been an eye-opener. I've been using a memorized formula in writing because it is what I learned from other youtubers or IELTS teachers. Thank you so much for changing my mindset before I take my exam 2 days from now.
That's great to hear! I'm glad it was helpful.

You expounded requisite correction in writing with logic.. It's really effective thanks.
Sir thanks for teaching us the correct way as per the examiner requirements.
I used to frame like this. ist A general stmt abt the topic. 2nd paraphrase the topic in own words 3rd Tell the reader my plan.
I have written in below way before reading instructions and then corrected too after going thru ur full video
With the advancement in technology and the expansion of internet connectivity and availability, many things are now become accessible online, even education. That is why, majority of parents nowadays think, that there is no need for sending their children to school. I too agree with this thought as now knowledge can be directly imparted from home, because there is abundance of content already available on the web and is comparatively cheaper in price.
Then I write 1 para on learning platforms on internet, 2nd on sky rocketed school feels, 3rd on parents themselves can teach children and then conclude
it's really helpful to me because where i need to focus write a standard essay for writing test
Thanks chris, u have articulate the introduction confusion nd it helped me alot to write my essay in an outstanding manner ......thks alot

Wow this is the video that I need badly 😍
Hi Chris! I like your lesson because you emphasise the importance of communicating clearly and effectively.
Introduction B is better and band 8 introduction. This is because the introduction says clearly what the writer wants to say.
Thanks & regards.

these examples seeining in your video are really good to understand what things i have to use in the introduction and what things definitely i don't have use them. thanks for your help
Always happy to help!
Thank you amazing teacher 👊🏻
Simply amazing. Valuable advice for people aiming at higher score in IELTS or TOEFL exam. SIMPLIFYING is at its best in this lesson, and I share the same vision when it comes to smooth writing style.
On the other hand, a memorised structure with cliches works better for people oriented at 5.5 to 7 score because simple and beautiful style requires months of training that students might not have. Furthermore, after 2 hours of stress, writing anything readable at all is already a considerable feat for an intermediate level student.
I am grateful for this eye-opening video. I will use your advice in my exam and will let you know if it works.
Thank you! We're happy to help.
Your explanations are so easy to grasp.
Thank you!
Thanks chris for such a great lesson...its gonna help me alot
I'm so glad it's helping!

Introduction B is more convenient to read and not written as complicated as A, but it genuinely introducts with the topic in the most appropriate way.

First time I have seen we can write two reasons we chose, in the introduction
Always use "to" after the word prefer. Using "Than" after prefer is wrong.
example: I prefer tea to coffee
the first sentence in B is another example
I really like all your lessons. These are so useful and to the point. Thanks for your great service Mr. Chris
