Ended up buying AOE 2 DE because of your podcasts T90 and i have noone to play with or whatsoever but this game is a nostalgia to me so its still worth it and gonna enjoy it. Thanks for the podcasts and great work as usual
He had the right idea of attacking blues base, but if brought some villagers over, they could dropped a castle inside there as well, and then tried to use both bases to echo from for the next army units.
I'm so glad i found this channel! I loved AOE since it came out and played it along with Eve online. Wasted too many years on Eve and should've just researched AOE to AOE2, lol
I'm really thankful that you do the T90 extras channel separately but link back to it. I only have so much time in the day and keeping the best and most entertaining in one place really helps me get my fix when I'm short on time while still letting do a deep dive when I find myself with more to spare.
The Feitoria is the best midgame eco in the game. Barely any investment of time, barely any investment of res, hard to quickly raid, only costs pop space which you probably won't be capping out for a while.
Advice for defending a castle drop on arena. Be on stone already: Since you're either going to do 4+ TC boom or drop a castle, you generally want to be on stone anyway. The exception is if you're going to contest the relics. Castle placement: When you see a castle drop you need to build a castle inside your base directly opposing the one being dropped. You can either build it within range or slightly out of range of the enemy's castle, depending on what kind of game you want to turn it into. This takes away as much space for your opponent to maneuver once inside your walls. Secure your base: Make a house or building wall around either side of your castle so when your opponent breaches the outer wall he can't immediately get into your eco. Keep scouting: You'll want to keep tabs on what the opponent is making behind it. A castle drop with nothing following is rare. If you see the opponent adding a siege workshop, you'll want to add one yourself (and match the number of mangonel). Make sure you make enough military so you don't get overwhelmed. Economy is your bet: Continue booming a bit but don't do 5TC anymore. Once you have eco going and you've avoided too much damage, go to imperial age and reclaim space. Don't take too long to do this or your opponent will collect all the important gold and stone on the map. Defender's advantage: as long as you're not caught off-guard you should be able to defend any castle drop. Consider buying 100 or 200 stone if it means getting your castle up sooner. I don't recommend buying more than that. (Goes back to already being on stone, if not going for relics.) If you are going for map control and relics, which most pros do, it means you have enough map presence to prevent a castle drop but your short-term eco will suffer (can't get 3rd and 4th TC upon hitting castle age.) Stall: your opponent has invested a lot to get the castle up. The longer you stall without taking eco damage, the better chances of winning you have. You'll want to boom as much as possible (3-4 TCs total) without falling behind in defences. The most common castle drop strategies involve 1TC aggression. As a viewer I/we invest a lot of time into a watching a video, and i can be very infuriating when we finally get to the end and player red or blue is really gonna get it, annnnnnd they quit! And as a viewer I'm just like WTF, I wanna se the kill, there are so many vids where ppl quit when they are just on the back foot. like the CBA game. The best content for me is clearly when ppl don't quit like whiners, community and low elo games very often keep fighting, i love that ! This was also a early quitting :-(
I don't think the Red is dead. He has a lot of resources banked in. Yes, his army doesn't have the imperial armor. However, he has enough resources to make semi-effective counter and build defensive buildings.

At low elo I have much more problems with janissaries than organ guns. I've discovered that a ram rush with strong infantry, like samurai or champions, will counter the organ gun ball.just rush the rams up to the guns and drop the infantry on top of them. I got the idea from Survivalist using siege towers +infantry to counter janissaries.

Dracken played this really well but he just lacks quite something to keep up with the top players in this game. As soon as lierrey did something out of the ordinary, his strategy completely fell apart. He had zero vision ob the biggest chunk of the map, even though he had full map control for the most part. And absolutely no idea what to do, once the knights arrives. Im pretty sure he could have been able to defend his base with the right idea in mind. Very impressive game though. Would have failed the same way against a much (!) weaker opponent. Edit: Did not expect Liereyy to lose there. lul Even better game now.
I’m only 800 elo, so would appreciate a better players thoughts on the following: If you’re defending against this, would it make sense to put a villager out during feudal (with some protection from a scout) and place a few random pieces of palisade (or wall) to block potential castle foundations right around your base? I’m sure if the pros don’t do it, there is a reason…just don’t know why this wouldn’t be effective at deferring your opponent from castle dropping right into castle age
Im also LEL but thinking about it and why it wont work lot of times its u need to just enough guys on woodlines for good fast castle build. A since u cant secure all thespace around your base with pointless palisades it would be bad to invest wood and villager work on that. U will be better placing more farms and adding some archers or scouts which can defend from castle drop since usually people ddoing it dont have any military by the time. I would consider it only if i had really bad spot forward gold/stone.
just make few scouts to loop around your walls and you will be fine. Also if your vill leave a walls he can be easily sniped by scouts which is really unnecassary at the early ages.

You might prevent a couple drop locations but the castle always goes up somewhere if there's no army to stop it. And its not the initial castle location that makes this strategy strong, its the organ gun follow up and 2nd castle that really hurt... and you can't use the palisade trick on the 2nd drop because of the organ guns. Typically its best to get that defensive castle up and stone wall like lierry did, then try to imp first and prioritize bombard cannons. If you don't have bombards start massing something (redemption monks/knights/eagles/archers) and wait as long as possible before taking a fight and attempt to overwhelm the OG mass. Either way its a race against death. Hope this helps! What a game!
I still think scout spam is the way to go to stop this. Even if all it accomplishes is keeping the Portuguese player's castle at home it's at least not trapping you in your base and strangling your eco. Wouldn't even have to spam I think, just make it look like your going to.

It was really confusing how dracken survived for so long until I googled what a faetoria did. Now that 13 eco doesn't seem so bad.

@@RKBock yeah they're made for ultra late game situations where gold runs out . But in those situations, they're quite powerful.
