  • If you happen to have lived in Charleston, SC at some time during the 60’s-90’s, you probably would have listened to Robert “Booby” Nash on WTMA. Today “Booby” picks from him “musty old file of goodies” an ”oldie” that peaked at #8 just 15 months ago in August of ’66.
    Our Spotlight dancers today are Jim Clinton & Ruby Dake, Rene Zaconi & Jerry Hughes, and Eddie Sanchez & Roni Menacker.
    …..And 3 days ago (Oct. 18), the last movie that Walt Disney would ever produce, ”The Jungle Book”, would be released. Walt Disney died in Dec. 1966, nearly a year before the film was finished. The box office success of “The Jungle Book” proved that Walt Disney Studios could be successful even without Walt.
    Airdate: Oct. 21, 1967

    I liked this song in 1966. I like the dancing in this video. I remember tv pop shows with the go go girls dancing and would stand in front of the TV trying to follow their moves. Tommy Roe had a few hits that decade I also liked his song Heather Honey

    I first heard this song after a swimming match, and on the way out of the pool area they played it on the speakers. I just sat there and dug listening to it. Then about 6 years later I was watching the film Kellys Heroes and noticed the drum part in the song was like Sweet Pea.

    Fun Spotlight featuring the "regulars" who switched it up by changing partners and dancing it out to Tommie Roe's "Sweet Pea". RIP Roni. Love this footage!

      dancer don Hi Don. I've haven't noticed Ruby Dake dancing on American Bandstand before. Do you recall anything about her or how long she appeared on the show? - Jeff

    • @dancerdon9175
      @dancerdon9175 Před 6 lety +5

      Hi Jeff! Ruby danced with Eddie in the late '67/'68 AB dance contest. They can be seen at 0:31 in my montage Part 3 of 3 that you so deftly (by which I am still humbled) produced and posted on your ABdancers channel. Ruby also danced with Buddy Schwimmer at times. Ruby, Ricky (Ruby's brother), Eddie, Sondra, Liver and Buddy danced on Bandstand from the early AB'67 through early AB'69 seasons. ~~ Don

    I remember watching this on my parents' B&W at the time and dancing to it. I was 6 and I did 'the monkey'. Has it really been 53 years?!?

    Wait up, on October 21 1967, ABC-TV reran the September 30, 1967 episode. Also, a couple of words. I like how this song is considered old and it was only a year old by this point. Nowadays, this song and any any song that is 15 years or older is considered an oldie.

    • @keithidota
      @keithidota Před 6 lety +3

      Nowadays a song that's a year old can still be on the Hot 100 charts.

      I'm going to be 16 in a few weeks and a lot of classmates still listen to the same songs after two years. I think I'm probably the youngest person on this channel. Subscribed since February '18.

    CHARLESTON, SC?! Alriiiiiiight! I was 8 years old in '67 - had no idea that I would be living in Charleston, SC, some 30 years later! WTMA is still an AM radio station here in Charleston, but it is a "talk radio station" now. Had to comment when I heard Dick say "Charleston"!

    People applaud for themselves all the time today which is stupid. If you’re good let the audience applaud and you should just nod and say thank you, thank you, thank you very much.

    The 60s were turbulent but some things shined like American Bandstand & the music. From my aging perspective i would gladly take "Sweet Pea," or of course the Beatles than Ariana Grande. She now reigns over the Beatles in total record sales different tastes for different times.

      Joe Postove no, I don’t put any filters on these (if that is even possible) they should be as downloadable as any other TY clips. If there is an issue it’s not due to anything I’ve done.
