- In a country that was built on suppressing the history of some of its citizens, cultural appropriation occurs constantly, more often than not, being misinterpreted. Aspects of Black culture are commonly taken and reintroduced as something different than its original intent. It’s time to uncover the impact of cultural appropriation on African and African American cultures.
Teri Beasley is a Senior at Moreau Catholic High School and a hardworking student-athlete from Hayward, CA. Since the beginning of the protests for Black Lives in early 2020, she has found a passion for standing up for justice and helping to educate others about what it means to be Black in America. Teri is someone who has a passion for helping others, loves traveling, and has a deep appreciation for old-school music. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
guys she isn't saying you can't wear or embrace another culture. what she is trying to point out is that the credit must be given when credit is due., and cultures must be embraced respectfully.
She is saying it though.
@@niketuck9687 no. Then you're really low on comprehending and understanding. You're hearing what she's saying but not listening. 🙄
Idk but I think its something that feeds on the pain of others out there.
How does one "give credit" to another culture "respectfully." For example, should she have given credit to another culture or race for her having straightened her hair, at the begining of her speach? Or should she have put something in the credits at the end?
Isn't wearing something another culture developed the ultimate approval and appreciation? I bought a sombrero when I moved to Arizona, because it's the best hat design for keeping cool in extreme heat and keeps the sun off you head and shoulders. Bravo to Mexico, a country I could happily live in if the organized crime government was eliminated.
I definitely think people being fired over hair is messed up beyond all recognition and that should be corrected and those people should be compensated for being put through a tough time just because they're physical attributes were a problem, this doesn't just involve one group of people though, happens to overweight people as well, or people with disabilities, there is a lot of reasons why people don't get hired in this country and in some cases it's for a good reason but from what this young woman is talking about of course this is wrong and people should definitely correct this, cultural appropriation isn't a problem though and I left another comment with my opinion on that.
Best way to put it learn about the culture and people.
I am not American so let me stress this point.....the entire American culture is based or evolved from some other countries culture!!! For example:
Declaration of Independence= Scotland, The declaration of Arbroath
Buffalo Plaid = Scotland,Rob Roy MacGregor Tartan
Donuts = France
Hotdogs = Germany
Pizza = Italy
Line dancing= Scottish/Irish Ceilidh Dancing
Country and Folk music= Scottish and Irish Folk music
Halloween = Celtic pagan harvest festival (Ireland and Scotland)
Supermarkets and convenience food = Started in Europe during WW2 to make rations last longer
Ect....you get my point
People don't want the truth just what they'd like to be true.
You are absolutely right. All of american culture is a slang form of other people's cultures from other countries.
Thank you so much for this! I stand with you!
Next stop, third grade special needs class.
The entirety of human history consists of apropiating cultures
It seems to me you missed the entire point. Your response is incredibly dismissive and attempts to render this girl's effort meaningless. Bad form on your part.
Exactly, that is the foundation of evolution.
@@Mialamorena1 it is meaningless.
@@isaidwhatisaid484You’re meaningless
Basketball comes to mind..
It's because they own us.
I'm confused
Of course you’ll be confused because you people aren’t that smart , but smart enough to steal culture
who do you think you are ??????
Lack of thorough & accurate education perpetuates the narrative of marginalization and is destructive & counter productive to unity. One Love!
Cultural appropriation = you can't do that because I say so! I can say certain words but you can't because you don't have the appropriate skin color. I can wear a hairstyle but you can't because you don't have the appropriate skin color. I can cook certain type of food but you can't because you're not from the country of origin. You can't wear those clothes but I can because of my skin color.
This is about power. It's not based on law. It's based on people giving themselves self appointed power to dictate the actions of others.
I bet you didn't even watch the video.
@@harpersmith1400 commenting on these videos to turn others away is more than efficient.
What a moron you are so many white neanderthals have this identity crisis and POC don't care, wear the box braids your hay bone dry hair WILL fall off but go ahead try because you want to look exotic. Always want to be what you can never become.
@@moonpienergy7261 why are you speaking about your dad like that? 😂 😂 😂 😂
@@moonpienergy7261 I'm a white Neanderthal who believes that people should have the freedom to do anything they want so long as it's not illegal and causes no harm to others. How can a person wearing a certain hair style cause harm to another person? You want the power to decide what others can do for no other reason than you lust for power.
If cultural appropriation is wrong, surely gender appropriation is wrong as well, yes?
Yes it is
This is such a strange "what-about-ism"... gender is not the same as a culture
Gender is a social construct but race is the way you look. They are different things
A lot of white fragility and entitlement in the comments. Ya'll are completely missing the point. What she's saying is to give credit where credit is due. It's not a hard concept. CA is like plagarism. You can't take from aspects of a culture and appropriate it into your life and not give credit to the original creators kinda like how can't take another person's work and copy aspects of it and not give credit to the author. Please understand that
I'm surprised this doesn't have more views. She's spot on.
When are you woke morons going to stop committing gender appropriation?
Awesome piece!
hope everyone knows and credit about europeans due to two-piece suit in order to use it..... nonsense.
Thank you for standing against cultural appropriation. So tired of CZcams trolls-- I hope this disrespect and white fragility doesn't take a moment of your time or energy because they don't deserve it. Your strength and clarity are an inspiration 🖤
dont encourage this nonsense. this girl is going to grow up a snowflake always playing the victim card and complaining
😐
Many states have now passed laws banning hair discrimination.
mm lets print color charts and do genetic tests to make sure we limit people to the proper cultural styles, stay in your lane and make sure people do not mix there cultures. i bet that is a very good idea and nothing will go wrong.
If you go back far enough, we all came from Africa...
Incorrect
@@thehelm658 that's what the evidence says...
@@Jaydem2805 SMFH JUST PLEASE STAY IN YOUR LANE LOL

Honestly take s*** up with Rachel dozer, the only person I think who went a bit too far with it, other than that where's the beef? Eminem?
Why is she whining like a 2 year old? What does she expect she is going to accomplish?

But... b.bu ...CoRnroWs 😢
Why are you whining like a 2 year old? What do you hope to accomplish through this dismissive comment? Just admit you don’t get it and leave.
Nice young lady-- but the absolute obsession and determination to show victim hood over a silly issue is depressing.. How would you even address Kim Kardashian' s dreadlocks? Legislate a law?The history of music or entertainment casting is an absolute issue, but cultural.appropriation is a ridiculously wide umbrella teem that just encourages the idiots to push the cancel machine.
Idiots? Cancel machine? Legislation? You were not listening.
