  • In a country that was built on suppressing the history of some of its citizens, cultural appropriation occurs constantly, more often than not, being misinterpreted. Aspects of Black culture are commonly taken and reintroduced as something different than its original intent. It’s time to uncover the impact of cultural appropriation on African and African American cultures.
    Teri Beasley is a Senior at Moreau Catholic High School and a hardworking student-athlete from Hayward, CA. Since the beginning of the protests for Black Lives in early 2020, she has found a passion for standing up for justice and helping to educate others about what it means to be Black in America. Teri is someone who has a passion for helping others, loves traveling, and has a deep appreciation for old-school music. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    guys she isn't saying you can't wear or embrace another culture. what she is trying to point out is that the credit must be given when credit is due., and cultures must be embraced respectfully.

      How does one "give credit" to another culture "respectfully." For example, should she have given credit to another culture or race for her having straightened her hair, at the begining of her speach? Or should she have put something in the credits at the end?

      Isn't wearing something another culture developed the ultimate approval and appreciation? I bought a sombrero when I moved to Arizona, because it's the best hat design for keeping cool in extreme heat and keeps the sun off you head and shoulders. Bravo to Mexico, a country I could happily live in if the organized crime government was eliminated.

    I definitely think people being fired over hair is messed up beyond all recognition and that should be corrected and those people should be compensated for being put through a tough time just because they're physical attributes were a problem, this doesn't just involve one group of people though, happens to overweight people as well, or people with disabilities, there is a lot of reasons why people don't get hired in this country and in some cases it's for a good reason but from what this young woman is talking about of course this is wrong and people should definitely correct this, cultural appropriation isn't a problem though and I left another comment with my opinion on that.

    I am not American so let me stress this point.....the entire American culture is based or evolved from some other countries culture!!! For example:
    Declaration of Independence= Scotland, The declaration of Arbroath
    Buffalo Plaid = Scotland,Rob Roy MacGregor Tartan
    Donuts = France
    Hotdogs = Germany
    Pizza = Italy
    Line dancing= Scottish/Irish Ceilidh Dancing
    Country and Folk music= Scottish and Irish Folk music
    Halloween = Celtic pagan harvest festival (Ireland and Scotland)
    Supermarkets and convenience food = Started in Europe during WW2 to make rations last longer
    Ect....you get my point

    Cultural appropriation = you can't do that because I say so! I can say certain words but you can't because you don't have the appropriate skin color. I can wear a hairstyle but you can't because you don't have the appropriate skin color. I can cook certain type of food but you can't because you're not from the country of origin. You can't wear those clothes but I can because of my skin color.
    This is about power. It's not based on law. It's based on people giving themselves self appointed power to dictate the actions of others.

    A lot of white fragility and entitlement in the comments. Ya'll are completely missing the point. What she's saying is to give credit where credit is due. It's not a hard concept. CA is like plagarism. You can't take from aspects of a culture and appropriate it into your life and not give credit to the original creators kinda like how can't take another person's work and copy aspects of it and not give credit to the author. Please understand that
