    I sucked a piece of aluminum that cracked off my OFH, so I'm mid teardown right now. (Still haven't found the piece that got sucked into the oil intake in the head.) I just found your videos and watched them all, you've been a great resource. Can't wait to find this chunk and begin the rebuild... then relocated inlets, outlets, downpipes, intercooler, CP w/ tial 50mm, stage 3+ clutch, new hpfp, 450 lpfp. Then e85 dyno session and hopefully some smiles and miles!

    hi great video you have here! do you have an idea of how much would it cost to rebuild an n54 on the cheapest side if i do all the work myself? or is it cheaper to just swap the whole engine and buy a used one?

    What sort of bolts are one time use and need to be brand new when replacing the head and cam ledges? Or are those bolts reusable?

    If I get my bottom sleeved is it the same gasket used or would it be different gasket ?

      If you mean your cylinders sleeved then yes I believe you still use the factory head gasket.

    Hi mate hoping you might have an answer - I've bolted my cams in and Im about to do the timing but with cylinder 1 at TDC I can't get my cams to spin to the right position. It feels like the valves may be hitting the piston maybe?
    Would I need to unbolt the cams, spin them to the righ position and then attempt to bolt them down again that way? Currently I can get about 90 degrees of movement on each side but its not enough to spin to the correct positions with either.

    • @doadrift
      @doadrift Před 3 lety +1

      I answered my own question lol. The answer was yes I had to unbolt them, turn them to roughly where I wanted them, clamp the cam covers and then rebolt them, if anyone runs into the same issue.

    Question: How does a person know if the guy doing his engine rebuild is doing a correct and thorough job?
    A person would spend a lot of money, but the quality of the workmanship can still be a question.

      @@335iN54Enthusiast I understand, but one hears regularly of sloppy mechanical work done on their cars. Me included, numerous times. And from the local Audi dealership no less. One time this dealerships mechanic even sent me home without tighten the lugs on my right front wheel and I nearly lost it on the freeway! I called them after I limped home and they said to just bring it back and they would tighten it properly. Seriously. And there have been several occurances of them using substandard parts vs OEM, damaging the vehicle and having to send it to a body shop, etc. Another guy related to me how this dealership once set the interior of his A4 on fire. They tried repairing it, but it was never the same.
      This is an Audi dealership right here in town. One of the premier dealerships in this city. I would like to trust them, but obviously I cannot. Its sad because Audi and Porsche cars themselves are excellent.
      And when you are talking about rebuilding an engine, there is a lot going on there. Done well and correctly its a great thing and worth the investment. Done poorly it can be an expensive nightmare.
