    Matt Groening's The Simpsons has been met with a lot of opinions. Over time, some people's general consensus has evolved into claiming that The Simpsons stopped being good after season 8, season 10, or sometimes even 12.
    … Now, I can guarantee that most of these people haven't even watched the show recently. Definitely not within the past 4 years, and definitely no further than a few random episodes.
    So, In this video, I look at the newer seasons of The Simpsons (including seasons 31, 32, 33 and 34) to argue why I think the show has entered a new "golden age" and people should stop saying modern Simpsons suck. I bring together multiple points including how the development of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie has improved, as well as the secondary characters.

    I will die on the hill that "Days Of Future Past" is one of the best Simpsons episodes from any era. That scene with Bart and Lisa drunk on wine in the treehouse having a sibling moment is as funny as it is heartwarming. I just hope whenever the series finale does happen, it is close to that in quality.

      @@wolfgalaxy9086 yeah I knew the story about it being a possible series finale and it certainly has that feel. Ironically it was like with Futurama. While I'm glad it is back on, again. It is a double edged sword as "Meanwhile..." with Leela and Fry growing old together was so perfect.

      There's a thing I've seen called "phantom Simpson seasons". Essentially the guy says if you simply cobble together the best episodes of seasons 9 and 10, the two fit into one great season 9. With this, people started cobbling together a phantom season 10 and 11 and so on.
      The problem was that there started to be less and less great episodes per season. Last time I checks the phantom seasons ended at a phantom season 17.

It feels more and more like the writters have been paying attention to the characters, the setups, and even continuity to a point! this was as much fun to watch as a "simpsons" episode!! ☺️

  • @MrDHWong1989
    @MrDHWong1989 Před 10 měsíci +44

    The problem I have with modern Simpsons episodes isn't so much that they're "bad", it's that most of them are forgettable, they lack staying power. Even if an episode is bad, it can be remembered for being bad, like how many fans still pick apart "Lisa Goes Gaga". As bad as that episode is widely considered, it is at least remembered for something, even if it is in a negative context.
    I stopped watching the show loyally after season 13 but out of curiosity I recently binged seasons 14 through 20 and by the end I think I could only remember the plots and jokes of about 3 episodes in total. The fact that many of us can still quote the Mr. Plow theme or laugh when they think about Homer daydreaming he's in the Land of Chocolate shows the strength of the writing during the Golden Age, which gave us consistently great episodes one after another. Sure, there are some gems in recent seasons as seen in this video but for every great modern episode there's about 20 forgettable or bad ones that make viewers feel like it isn't worth the effort anymore.

    • @peacewillow
      @peacewillow Před 10 měsíci +10

      my friends get irritated with me because, no matter what happens, i'm like, "there's a 'simpsons' about that!!"
      of course, i have seen every episode multiple times, like hundreds, if not thousands, of times (it's on my tv right now), so that's probably why i remember so many episodes and quotes. 😝
      long live the simpsons, eternally in syndication!!

    • @Idran
      @Idran Před 10 měsíci +13

      are you sure the reason those golden age episodes stuck in your head so well isn't _because_ you watched them religiously because you enjoyed them so much? i mean, it's weird comparing how well you remember episodes you watched a ton of times to how well you remember episodes you watched in a six-season binge
      (also, honestly, while the mr. plow _episode_ is great, the mr. plow _theme_ is just an earwormy jingle that's hardly some masterpiece of clever writing; it's not even satirical of jingles, it just literally is one :P)

    • @MrDHWong1989
      @MrDHWong1989 Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@Idran Perhaps "religiously" was the wrong word to use, maybe "loyally" instead.
      Remember that there are entire generations of viewers who weren't even born when the Golden Age first aired and would have grown up watching seasons 13+ when they were children, yet we don't really see them quoting from those episodes like the older fans do. Again, this comes down to staying power, in that while someone like me can only really recall a small handful of memorable episodes from season 13-20, there are fans who can recall entire season's worth of gags, jokes, and plots from the classic era.

    • @mightybk
      @mightybk Před 10 měsíci +3

      I agree. Seems like people either hate the new stuff or defend it. There have been some good episodes, but there hasn't been anything I've really considered great in a long time. When the show came out, it was considered edgy. It isn't edgy anymore. You can't keep the quality up over such a long period; you just can't. People don't want to admit it, but it's just the reality of the situation.

    • @anthonymock9717

      Personally, I'm 41 and can name tons of great episodes from season 13-20. Seasons 1 and 2 weren't great, IMO, and I think most people saying the early season had all the good moments are basing that solely on nostalgia. I didn't start watching the simpsons until my mid-20s, so I don't have the same sort of youthful nostalgia for the show, and I would argue seasons 13-19 have tons of 5-star episodes

    I think nostalgia and denial has blinded a lot of people into going into modern simpsons with a pessimistic attitude and into the classics with rose tinted glasses. Whilst there have been some shockers as a whole the last 5 years have been pretty on par… lets not forget that whilst they will always be iconic the first 10 seasons did have a few catastrophic stinkers

    • @murmursmeglos
      @murmursmeglos Před 10 měsíci +1

      I mean that's the thing, there aren't catastrophic stinkers, unless we're talking the often discussed dips in quality during seasons 9 & 10. There's some average ones and some accounting for personal taste, but the most disliked episode of the first several seasons is a clip show as they're always dismissed as lazy.

    Ironically after the 500th episode i kind of gave up on the show for awhile finding it tiring except for an episode here and there but then heard about "Bart vs itchy and scratchy" and watched and enjoyed that which got me back into the show eventually circling around and watching all the series once LS Mark made that "watching every simpsons episode ever" video and honestly I've also been digging the latest seasons and feel the show is a lot stronger then it's been since yeah early 2000s. So of that note if we're talking most modern Simpsons let me go after some of my favs from the recent seasons.
    31.
    "Bart The Bad Guy" - Admittedly I'm super Marvel fan so I'm going to love the Avengers Infintiy War/Endgame spoof episode but I think this was very done not only mocking the Marvel movies but giving Bart a chance to mess with the townspeople in a unique way and comment on our series spoiler culture.
    "The Hateful 8 Year Olds" - I feel as Lydia pointed out one of the great things the show has done lately is stop treating Lisa as just a mouth piece and as an actual kid and episodes like this are a good way of doing that showing her distress at having to go a slumber party of meaner older girls and reconnecting with Bart in a believable fun kind of way.
    "The Way of the Dog" -this is another one of those "potential series ender" episodes but honestly works really well as a season ender as it reconnects back to the first episode and is a great focus on Santa's Little Helper.
    32.
    "Podcast News" - Easily the best Kent Brockman focus the character ever got plus it's cool to see Marge and Lisa bond over their investment in true crime podcasts. I also didn't exactly see that twist with Grandpa and the lady in how it exactly played out but the reveal was so great not even going to spoil it for those who haven't seen it.
    "A Springfield Summer Christmas For Christmas" - You may not get or appreciate this one if you aren't familiar with how hokey, cliched and obnoxious Hallmark christmas specials are. I haven't seen them but just seeing reviews of them you get that feeling so seeing the show mock that with that sort of plot and how it plays out is great.
    "Mother And Child Reunion" - Recent episodes have probably done better future episodes but I appreciate the focus on Marge and lisa's relationsihp as they grow older since before it was more from like either the kid's perspective or more around Homer but that's not the case here.
    33
    "You Won't Believe What This Episode is About - Act Three Will Shock You" - You know people talk a lot about how ahead of it's time episodes like "Homer Badman" are and yeah on some aspect that's right but the thing is time and attitudes and how we view those changes and as much as that episode was about sort of the effects of cancel culture imaging this one is much more timely and then having it devolve into a spoof on the suicide squad film and still work says a lot about this team's effort to commit to the bit.
    "My Octopus And A Teacher" - With a cute subplot and honestly introducing Ms Peyton who yeah isn't any Mrs K right yet but I have no problem aceepting her Bart's new teacher and honestly I do appreciate them using this excuse to tell an interesting new sort of story for Bart but still fitting as a Bart episode.
    ""Meat Is Murder" - The Krusty stuff here just feels like it's going about the status quo but then you have Grandapa and Lisa's relationsihp which is sweet and the stuff mocking Succession which is hilarious great. Too bad they did this now instead of waiting for the show to end but it's still good regardless.
    34.
    "Step Brother From The Same Planet" - Honestly of the modern seasons so far to me 34 is easily the best with a lot of great episodes that Lydia didn't even mention but I'm sticking to 3 and I'm spotlighthing this one not just because of Melissa McCarthy's surprsingly solid perofrmance as Calvin (seriously had no idea it was her) but having Homer have this rivarly with a step brother like this in a new kind of story for him we oddly enough haven't seen which makes it stand out.
    "Game Done Changed" - Though it is really cute to see the other Simpsons get into this sort of online baby game just to be able to hear Maggie the meat of this story is Bart and Skinner essentially crafting NFts and scamming them out and becoming this sort of team and how that went. It fits with Syemor's attitude in a way even other Bart and Skinner classic episodes didn't and still makes it work so well.
    "Carl Carson Rides Again" - Another episode about Carl not only delving into his history but also his blackness in a very understanding and not patornizing way that I appreciate them giving him. Plus I think the first episode in the show where Lisa doesn't appear at all. Isn't that so odd? But still good ep.
    And good video Lydia keep it up!

    I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t one of those people who said, “Modern Simpsons Suck”. I did go off it for a long time due to the direction it was going with elements like Jerkass Homer, Flanderisation and the silly stories (jockey elves).

    As a person who has watched the Simpson’s since season one on TV I can say these past 10+ years have been bad and this past yeah really bad. You can pour a TON of perfume on a pile of $&*t it’s still a pile of $&*t! The Simpson’s used to regularly grow roses as whole episodes but lately it only occasionally grows ordinary flowers and those are within an episode not a whole episode.
    Simpson’s used to buck culture now it conforms to culture. Yeah there have always been cultural references but the show was going against the norm not enforcing the norm. How are the Simpson’s today different than the popular shows of the 50’s and early 60’s that reinforced the cultural norms of their day??? Lots of people love to talk about how bad it was to have shows reinforcing the cultural values of the day.

    I've watched a serious Flanders at least a dozen times by now. Such an incredible storyline. So many good episodes recently, I'm beyond happy. It's good, and it's different. Often different can be an issue, but not here. At the same time we got back some old behaviors and personalities while exploring new horizons. If season 36 follows that trends, it will cement my believe that they finally corrected course and found their footing again. I'm very excited for the future.

    My problem with modern simpsons is mostly the stiff character poses lol. I think they're phasing out of this period, but it was family guy levels of a still character model only blinking and moving their mouths to talk, with stock repeated movements. It's like when a live action show has good writing but the bad acting ruins the whole thing. So many classic simpsons moments get the comedy from the characters expression lol, it makes the jokes land and the characters more interesting. Recently it's been looking like it was animated by AI. Just like every other modern cartoon. They need better storyboarders or whoever is in charge of that shi lol. Also the older colour palettes were more diverse and gorgeous but I can see why they moved away from their early "experimental" style.
    I think Moe and Smithers should have found love inside the show, like they've done before with Flanders and Edna etc, instead of new characters being introduced cause it over complicates something that should be more simple.

    Late Simpsons is a mixed bag. Most of the episodes you've mentioned are great, and I am excited to see where they go wit my some of these characters. But some characters are being changed in ways I dislike. Though he did write a lot of episodes I really did like, one of the newer writers they brought on the team has seemingly been put in charge of most all episodes featuring Sideshow Bob. I'm not sure why but it seems like if they are pushing him to be a sort of scientist? In The treehouse of horror he was in he was doing science and reviving The Dead, and then in the man who grew too much he's messing with GMOs and human DNA. I kind of want to go back to the theatric attempted murderer trying to kill Bart and simultaneously move on from his obsession. I can still see most of that in his modern appearances, but not nearly as much. Also weird note Francesca and Gino are gone. In Bobby it's cold outside he's seeing with a woman and mildly flirting with her as she aggressively flirts back and they sing Baby It's Cold Outside. What happened to his wife and son? Another character I'm really not liking the characterization of it later seasons, and this is no surprise to anyone who's seen the show, isn't dead Flanders. I really truly do miss the Ned Flanders who always tries to understand people around him and love the people around him. I cannot stand what they have done to him, they invaded my hateful Christian parody. I think the biggest example is comparing alone again natura-diddly did the episode where they had a young youth pastor. It's just such a stark difference. That old ned is willing to accept different types of music in the church environment, all the modern holy sees it as the devil. I don't know these two things are just really messing me up. But I do agree with almost every point made here. The episode about Martin was great, a serious Flanders was incredible, Lisa's belly was insightful, and I forget the name but the musical with Hugh Jackman was very fun

    I'm 23 I've watched, and loved, The Simpsons since I was a child! :)
    I honestly only recently started noticing the shift in the shows more recent material; I'd always heard people talking about how there's "a dip after the first ten seasons" but to this day I disagree. Of course there are some episodes that aren't as good as others, but I don't even agree with the idea that the first ten seasons were the best. I think every season has it's notable and entertaining episodes, be that for the comedy involved or the stories being told!
    I had been watching the episodes in completely random order so a few months ago I started watching them in order on Disney+ (I'm currently on S15, E7) and I'm still loving every episode as much as I did the first time I'd watched them! :)
    Some of my favourite episodes from the more recent series would have to be...
    - Barthood
    - The Great Phatsby
    - Covercraft (side note, I WISH The Simpsons would release official versions of the songs from the show! Hoping For A Dream **SLAPS** haha)
    - Moho House
    - (although I haven't seen it yet, I still LOVE the story behind the episode) The Burns Cage

    I think that there is an interesting discussion that I'd like to start off with buy a quote from as far back as the 13th season of The Simpsons "of course the Simpsons did it first. And well" that quote was spoken by Matt Stone and Trey Parker when they were talking about their episode The Simpsons did it. Which I bring up because there's a bit of an interesting parallel here in that many fans of both shows agree that there was a definitive golden age of the series and people saying that some of the newer stuff that has come out has not lived up to those Heights. Which I think is unfair to the writers of each show given the fact that the shows have a longevity which many other cartoons like them do not have( just look at shows such as king-of-the-hill and Futurama that are being brought back after they ended. Or family guy which got canceled similar to Futurama). And I think that The Simpsons consistently switching up writing staffs and showrunners much like Matt and Trey keeping their finger on the collective pulse of the world is one of the reasons why both the shows have managed to stay relevant for well over a thousand episodes between the two of them. And it is astonishing particularly in the realm of animation that's not geared for children to be as long-running as it is( think about the fact that the first episode of The Simpsons aired in 1989.....which is damn near 4 full decades removed from the presidency of George HW Bush). Most animated sitcoms are lucky to last Five Seasons let alone 35. And I know it might seem a little bit dated now given when it was produced but I think the success of The Simpsons Movie really helped rejuvenate the love of The Simpsons property and carried it towards what we have today. I will never be upset at new Simpsons content nor will I be upset at new South Park because they are irreverent humour that shaped multiple Generations. And the fact that they have not become Antiquated or cliche is really a testament to the teams that they have put in charge over the years

    While I consider Seasons 2-8 to be my favourites, I have enjoyed Seasons 9 onwards (with Season 13 been my least favourite). As for the recent Seasons, it has certainly been an interesting few Seasons. The ones that I enjoy the most I give a 10/10
    Season 31 only really has "Bart the Bad Guy", there are other episodes that I loved like "The Way of the Dog", "Livin La Pura Vida", "Thanksgiving ofo Horror", "The Fat Blue Line" & "Marge the Lumberjill", but they also have flaws in them which causes them to be 9/10 episodes. Honestly for Season 31 its just those 6 episodes that I enjoy, the rest are either okay, meh or I dislike
    Season 32 is better, it has "The Road to Cincinnati" which I feel like is the first format breaker of the recent 4 Seasons, with Uncut Femmes been the second one. I still do feel like Season 32 has a few duds, namely "The 7 Beer Itch" & "Panic on the Streets of Springfield"
    Season 33 is where I can see a change, I feel like 2 episodes that deserve a shoutout are "My Octopus and a Teacher" & "Poorhouse Rock", same with Season 34 as for me, it also has another good Skinner & Bart episode, an interesting Homer & Abe episode and another amazing Carl episode where he gets a girlfriend that I hope sticks with the rest of the series similar to CBC & Kumiko and Moe & Maya.
    Unfortunetely, there are episodes that you mentioned that didn't do much for me. While I did like "Lisa's Belly" & "Portrait of a Lackey on Fire", I do have my problems with both episodes, same goes for "Lisa the Boy Scout". "Bartless" is also an episode that I felt rather underwhelmed by alongside "My Life as a Vlog".
