Nick Higgs The Singer 2024 - Hudba
I've always said that VoicePlay are so much more than singers, it's what sets them apart from most a capella groups. The acting skills, the arrangements, the fun, the sheer genius of what they come up with. Fascinating to see Cesar, usually so cute and sassy, being so fierce and intense. :)
Geoff's note was a 14 sec B0 plus another 2 B0s later. When J None comes through the door, listen for Layne making creaky door sounds. Eli is amazing, and Cesar has put another layer to his voice as well. This whole piece is epic. Creep (a project from Eli instead of Geoff or Layne) is just unlike any other version I've heard.
B0 for 15 seconds, with modulation. Then more B0 near the final
Viking had something called 'flyting' Mock battles of throwing insults at an opponent. Skills of making up rhymes on the fly in those was awarded richly. So rapping fits perfectly.
A strong 5 person unit is shown in their latest, Sleeping In the Cold Below, a space shanty.
soooooooo what i'm getting is that the Vikings could've done Proto-Rap Battles? my respect for them just skyrocketed, which already was high because i'm danish, but still.
When they commit they go all out! They got a nod from the composers for this version (see the comments on this video - I think they pinned it). Thanks for the reaction!!🌹🕊
Have you seen VoicePlay's cover of In the Hall of the Mountain King, by Edvard Grieg? Yep, the classical piece. It is an absolutely amazing piece of music. Not only is the vocal arrangement absolutely, impossibly creative and surprising, but the visuals are on another level. You want to see what VoicePlay can do in terms of storytelling without saying a single word? This is the video you want.
Seconded. Mountain King is the best video VP has ever done, and that is saying something.
This right here is my favorite reaction to this piece! I love that you looked not only at the singing but also the acting and the “play,” because these guys really are the whole package. This is also just a genius song-@miracleofsound (the writer-he gave this ten out of ten alehorns in the comments) did a few different versions with different featured singers, plus a solo version, and there are LOTS of other covers. It’s really going to be an iconic piece.
The rap part is added by Voiceplay, the writer is credited in the description. To me it’s also pure genius. J knocks it out of the park but the words are amazing by themselves.
I also love Eli’s rock star moments, and he’s one of the best actors I’ve seen-just check out the subtleties in his various roles. Even his Vikings and pirates are entirely different characters, where he could have brought the same character to each piece. Cesar, too, brings his berserker to this, and we get to hear a whole different character in his voice as well. All these guys are great actors and singers, and Layne is a beast at vocal perc.
Again, loved this reaction! More like this, please!!
Hoist the colors. That’s all I’m going to say. You like this one? You’ll love that one
Agree, and The Dragonborn Comes!
Great reaction! Thank you for reacting to the entire package of VoicePlay, since they really are unique in the theatricality of their productions - always amazing!
You are so right with your complete work comment. That sums them up for sure. I would recommend Hoist the Colours, it’s also really epic and one of my favorites. For something amazing and fun I recommend We Don’t Talk About Bruno. I hope you react to them again soon! (And Voctave!) ❤
Creep is beautiful and Eli and Cesar shine. Hoist the Colors is a masterpiece. Dream On, Whiskey in the Jar, Nothing Else Matters. Really, you can't go wrong with Voiceplay 😊
Love your thoughtful reaction and how you consider the performance as a whole. Thanks from a VP fan!
You have no idea how happy it made me to see that you reacted to Voiceplay again! I subscribed the first time and watch a lot of your other content, but Voiceplay and Geoff are where it's at. I know it's only been four months, still.
Everything you've reacted to from Voiceplay was arranged by Layne. He and Geoff have been trading off month to month in arrangements for a long time. Eli has also done a few arrangements and collaborations with Layne. Voiceplay suggestions:
Geoff:
I Can't Make You Love Me
Hoist the Colours (Pirates of the Caribbean 3)
Drunken Sailor
Eli:
Eleanor Rigby
Creep
I think you’d like their last full release. It’s Sleeping In The Cold Below, and most people are calling it a space shanty. I can tell you that it’s a real earworm. When they first premiered it on Patreon, it was weeks before it stopped being the first thing rattling in my head after waking up. I think you’ll like it.
IF you want to talk about VP's acting chops check their cover of "In the hall of the mountain king" it is a study in an A Capella cover of an instrumental piece combined with visual story telling.
My 3 favs from Voice Play include female guest vocalists. They are: "Enemy" with AleXa, "Little Mermaid Medley" with Rachel Potter, and "We Don't Talk About Bruno" with Ashley Diane( so good that Disney hired them for a corporate event).
Aristotle said “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. That sums up VoicePlay, especially in their more dramatic pieces.
For pure harmony, try out the covers of Tennessee Whiskey, Can’t Help Falling in Love with You, Bridge Over Troubled Water and True Colors.
For just plain fun, check out their Boy Bands in 5 Minutes which covers 11 songs from a variety of boy bands spanning a few generations.
For rock try their covers of Carry On Wayward Son (which is the first I heard and still one of my favorites). They have also done Dream On, Seven Nation Army. One of the most spectacular ones is their cover of Nothing Else Matters which we refer to as Metallicapella. Another favorite is their Queen in 5 Minutes medley.
More pop or older songs, try Superstition (J raps in that one as well. I am not a fan of rap, but it really did add to the piece), Kiss, In the Air Tonight, Eleanor Rigby.
For drama, check out the covers of Hoist the Colours, My Mother Told Me, and Hellfire. Hall of the Mountain King is not to be missed.
One of my favorites is the cover of Warriors which was originally released in connection with a League of Legends tournament. A few other game related songs are My Mother Told Me (Assassin‘s Creed), Dragonborn/Skyrim, HALO and the recent Sleeping in the Cold Below (Warframe).
They have the best Disney covers out there. My personal favorite is the Little Mermaid medley, but they have also done a Frozen 2 medley, Moana medley, I’ve Got Friends from the Other Side from Princess and the Frog and Go the Distance from Hercules. The cover of We Don’t Talk about Bruno is better than that in the movie.
Thanks for the reaction. I have watched a lot of them and what you added was the appreciation for the wholeness of the experience. That the costumes and lighting are not distractions or just embellishments but part of a whole piece. VoicePlay is my favorite acapella group and I remember that opera was also a favorite form. I love the story element. I understand that other people could respond differently and find these things distracting. So lucky to be living in a time where we have so many choices.
Voiceplay recommendations are my mother told me, sleeping in the cold below, carry on my wayward son, the dragonborn comes
U also need to do Unshaken by Geoff Castellucci omg its so good pls do it
If you wish to hear the original, understand, it is NOT the one with Peyton Parrish. 😮
Also the set was created by Eli in Unreal Engine and it is being projected on giant LED wall screens. The camera has a special tracker on it to make it more realistic throughout the movement.
Welcome to world of Geoff's B0's. This one held for 15 seconds. Unreal!! My interpretation is 4 of the 5 are already dead and welcoming J. None who dies when he passes through the door and goes from life to death and the ships aren't there for the attack, the ships are coming take them to Valhalla. My interpretation anyway. Could be wrong. Hoist the Colours next!
I tend to agree that the ships dropped J off into Valhalla. They get further away from shore and closer to that Vertical 'light' as the song goes on. We also see them up in the air, not sitting on the sea as they were in the beginning.
Great reaction. They do a really great job sucking you into the scene. You would enjoy their version of hoist the colors, the dragonborn comes, and hall of the mountain king. You are totally immersed in what they are doing.
Can't wait for the next.
So nice to see you do VoicePlay again!!
Valhalla Calling was inspired by Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and Eivor. Some fun information for you: Geoff held that first B0 subharmonic about 15 seconds beneath the verse (he holds it about 12 seconds later on under the rap), as well as singing several A1, F#1, and E1 Subs and chest notes. He said Layne kept pushing him lower and lower, making this the lowest song for him (to date). And Eli is throwing incredible D5s and B5s around as if they were nothing! Layne's vocal percussion, including the "breathing" and the creaky door opening are totally on point. The rap lyrics were added, written by Alfredo Austin. You can always find the credits for their videos (and Geoff's) in the descriptions. This was not shot on green screen. It was shot in a volume studio (like the one used for The Mandalorian) with a 155 foot wide, 26 foot tall LED screen, using Eli's Unreal Engine animated set designs. This allows the "set" to track with the camera's movement, making it seem as if the guys are actually on an elaborate film set. The air conditioning at the studio wasn't working, so they were very sweaty Vikings LOL Rick Underwood and Renette Feren did an amazing job recreating the My Mother Told Me makeups for the characters, with some added touches. The runes on Cesar's face and Geoff's arm say VoicePlay. The rune on Eli's forearm and J's face (as it was in My Mother Told Me) is the Norse word rune for music, tónlist. The way it is displayed on J's face is reminiscent of the Assassin's Creed: Valhalla character Sigurd Styrbjornson. Geoff had tónlist on his upper arm for MMTM. Several MMTM costume pieces were repurposed for this shoot. One example: Cesar is wearing the robe José used. Do check out My Mother Told Me and their latest, Sleeping in the Cold Below - oh, and for sheer theatricality, check out the Little Mermaid Medley and This is Hallowe'en
I always get some thing from reading other people’s comments. I knew that they used Unreal Engine for The Mandalorian, but I had no idea of the scope of the screen. It’s one more factoid to share with my Star Wars fanatic son. Thank you!
Geoffs' B zero. Sustained amazing.
It’s insane!
@@nickhiggsthesingerI recommend you do Bang by AJR covered by voice play
You won’t regret
Definitely here for more VoicePlay and more Voctave! Tennessee Whiskey is in my VoicePlay top ten from back when Earl was with the group. It's so chill and gorgeous. Voctave's Disney's Heroes and Villains let's all their gentlemen singers shine; EJ Cardona's Hunchback section is not to be missed. VoicePlay and Home Free hilariously teamed up for vampires vs. zombies in Survivor. If you have any interest in barbershop, Ringmasters have a Notre Dame Medley that is stunning and, in my opinion, under-reacted to. I'm sure we will enjoy whatever you pick next! :)
Thank you so much for your recommendations!
Perfect recommendations!
Uhm... Zombies vs Hillbillies.
@hwyla4416 you are correct. Had vampires on the brain. 😅
This is a favorite for a lot of us! It's an amazing piece. They really put their all into it. Loved your reaction!! ❤
For recs, I'm gonna go with "Hoist The Colours." It's like this one but with pirates
Thank you so much!!
Geoffs solo stuff has some amazing examples of him singing in pulse register
1:51 preemptive condemnation of Richard Wagner, smart move. 😅
Great Reaction to an epic performance by non other than the phenomenal voiceplay.
Sleeping in the Cold Below is another video game cover, and Dragonborn Comes from Skyrim. Also the Halo theme would be good to cover (listen to the end). For fun, Drunken Sailpr, In the Hall of the Mountain King or The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
Gesamtkunstwerk - that's it! All of their videos are... they put thoughts and effort in their vids as well as in their music. You got all the recommendations already...please do some more reactions!🎉❤
Yes!! Thanks for your comment
The note in the beginning is a B0!!!
Geoff is crazy.
Don't hurry to Valhalla, Nick. We need you!
This is definitely a song to get you ready for battle. Ironically also my first ever VoicePlay song.
But its also sort of hilarious to me, cause the visuals are very much telling a story of the main group sort of... waiting. The Os in the opening very much representing both Valhalla calling all of them to battle, and VP calling J home. Its not until J comes to the lodge that they step out to fight. Maybe he was scouting or the ships were double reference to him being off with the Navy. He comes back to his clan (VP) and with them at his side, they all lets loose and J goes into a full on berserker state (the rap/flyting).
Very similar vibe to the opening of In the Air Tonight actually. Someone challenged J to a street fight and his Acapella brothers show up to back him up.
Go after one member of VoicePlay and the whole gang shows up to bury you. 😂
Geoff goes all out and this one too. Not as many people catch it though or realize just amazing what he’s doing is. That low note you wanted to know what it is. Sorry I don’t remember what it is and don’t feel like going to my piano to figure it out. But he holds it for like 16 bars. He has one of those unique talents that make it able for him to breathe in while he keeps the singing going. Very very cool. 😎
mans got the literal range of a 5-string bass without fry 💀
I enjoy your reactions!
''Geoff is like a frost giant.'', that had me rollin', than like........yeah, fair he is. And, I was like Valhalla wasn't calling Voiceplay, Voiceplay was calling Valhalla in this video.
Once again, great reaction and analysis.
Great reaction and analysis. Thank you!
The b0 which for those with keyboard knowledge is the second lowest white key on the piano. He hits the note three times, for if you count the slide too a f1 then back
I would suggest "If I Had a Heart" by The Bass Gang ... it's equally immersive and radiates a different overall vibe ... definitely worth it.
If you placed VP on a hill, Geoff does "the warhorn" plus Eli getting all "viking mode", I think their ennemies would literally sh*t their pants 😂🙈
Every time they're transporting the emotions so well in their singing, plus Layne laying and accentuating the mood with the amazing percussion... it's so beautiful 🤩
You want to hear more rapping in a cappella? Check out VoicePlay's covers of Superstition, Mission: Jingle Bells, and I Knew You Were Trouble/As Long As You Love Me.
Great reaction here. VP really outdid themselves on this one. It is definitely a hype song for sure.
VoicePlay also has a rather old one of a Hamilton song with rap. But of the ones listed, I would suggest "Superstition"
@@hwyla4416 yes, true!
I recommend Lion sleeps tonight from them Geoff has beautiful part there.
Please listen to "Hoist the Colors" from them. Its amazing!
Valhalla was the reward for living a great life, it was to come home!
Berserker Cesar. Rock God Eli. J None, the modern-day Viking (he's singing with the Naval Choir). Geoff, the Dragonborn. Layne the Human Synthesizer. This song has it all, it's my favorite Voiceplay song, and I listen to it every other night on repeat for a few hours. Geoff's B0s are almost more felt than heard. It's like a lion's purr. Have you done "My Mother Told Me?" It's another Viking theme song, with Jose Rosario Jr. The Gentleman Rogue!
You’re a super fan!
@@nickhiggsthesinger Ah, that's nothing. Last year, according to Spotify, I listened to VP's "Hoist The Colors" over 43,500 times. Totally serious. I sleep to it, you see. For some reason, it relaxes me.
Reaction Suggestion: "Something Just Like This" by Voiceplay. Perfect example of how Voiceplay Covers songs without losing the essence of the original, while also giving it something of their own and making it ten times better.
Also, Nick's reaction just gave me a whole lot of insight into the deeper meanings of the song and the Music Video. All this while i have been listening to the song with no real understanding of the lyrics lol.
Voiceplays cover of Seven Nation of Army is definitely worth checking out
You could do an all VP and Geoff Halloween for October--many of their best are Halloween songs. And their Pirates of the Carribean cover is lots of fun, too.
Subscribing to this channel just because of Voiceplay ❤😊
im impressed with geoff in that i can go as low but i cant sing when i do and run out of air about 5 seconds in
You really need to react to Diana Ankudinova singing Rechenko. She was 14 when She sang that song. Her Waze rivals any other artist today.
Seven Nation Army by Voiceplay
Found your channel recently. Binged everything Voiceplay you have! I appreciate the breakdowns you make!
Here's some songs you might enjoy checking out!
1. My Mother Told Me (Voice Play)
2. If I Was A Rich Man (Voice Play)
3. Misty Mountains (Geoff Castellucci)
4. The Little Mermaid Medley (Voiceplay)
Thank you for thr review. Would recommend "Nothing Else Matters" or "Wicked Medley".
You need to react to Home Free’s Mayday and helplessly, hoping. You’ll have fun analyzing them. Make sure you watch for them, singing the same vowels, in the exact same way. when they’re just harmonizing. It’s also really nice to hear Adam Rupps amazing voice as well.
There's a fan theory that the characters in this video are also the ones in "My Mother Told Me"
Hope you react to more voice play songs
Subbed 😁 Would love to see more analysis on Voiceplay. Also would really love to see reactions to the Hazbin Hotel songs- there have been a lot of general reactions, but not a ton of actual vocal commentary.
You need to react to “ Charlie“Zhou shen he is an amazing singer with an otherworldly voice
That one dude does screw a tenor. I can hit soprano AND alto like a boss!
This performance is their best in my opinion. Such passion. Also, GOW Ragnorak is a stupidly good game. No spoilers, but it is the definition of character growth. Make sure you also play the (ironically) Valhalla DLC.
Voctave...'nuff said
Yes so good !!
Check out some of Home Free early live concerts. Austin does love to rap.!!!
Jnons eyes!
It was B0, Layne owns patty cake productions so that's part if the top notch production quality
Voiceplay, In The Air Tonight, feat. J. None
So you have yet to react to Nightwish? Ghost Love Score would be a great place to start (Wacken 2013 concert) Floor is THE most versatile singer in the world...
first note was B0 . bass
Fairly sure last note was an F5
If you like this you definitely need to check out "My Mother Told Me" by Colm McGuinness
They’re very professional especially since on that day their air conditioner was out. These guys are in florida
That my friend was a sub harmonic B0
I will ask you to review Forestella.
Voiceplay is at a MASSIVE disadvantage, having Geoff as a bass singer in the group. I mean - They're at a massive ADVANTAGE by having him as well, but the problem that arises is that EVERYONE seems to swoon so much at the low notes they easily gloss over the other singers, where EACH of them could be the highlight in the group. You're the second person ever i've seen even MENTIONING Eli's high note in the end.. Also the harmonies behind the rap section are second to none, and the "This is war" belt from Eli there, that could easily have been it's own section all on it's own. Layne does alot more than beatboxing, which is only one of the ways he shines.. In retrospect and repetition, they could all be the highlight in that group, but gets outshone by the low notes from Geoff everyime.
You had me in the first half, not gonna lie! Geoff is definitely an asset to the group!
@@nickhiggsthesinger It was not meant as a critique of the group as a whole, i'm just saying that it seems that Eli, Layne and Cesar gets glossed over way too much because women start dripping when Geoff goes subharmonic.
Unshaken!!
❤️👍
😃
Jack Sparrow trick!
mercy
I invite you to discover this wonderful talented young singer.
This angel is one of the best singers (incredible extremely low vocal, dramatic contralto + polyphonic voice) in the world!
Diana Ankudinova
I was stunned to find that the first performance (Show "You are Super") I heard was when she was 14!!!!
She's now 20 and still developing. She sings in Russian, French, English, German, Spanish and Arabic.
The covers she performed on that show are very popular on CZcams. Many CZcamsrs publish reactions on these performances, which include "California Dreamin' " , "Sweet Dreams" (all 19 y.o.), "Can't Help Falling In Love", "Crow", "Personal Jesus" (all 18 y.o.), "Wicked Game", "Human" (15 y.o.), "Derniere Danse", "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" (14 y.o.), "Take On Me" (17 y.o.) , film soundtrack to Dune, James Bond, Spirit of Baikal (all 20 y.o) and others.
A small selection of some of Diana's best performances.
The first short video (TRY IT NOW) is a photoshoot with a short snippet of Sweat Dreams.

Let me say it in German: Es ist einfach grauenhaft ...
The bass is rather off the charts, isn't it. I mean he can seriously go low, but there's something that always bothered be about that. I think it's because there's a reason bass instruments usually don't go that low. Because once you reach a certain point it loses musicality and just becomes a rumble. I mean, kudos for having that ability, but finding an excuse to use it in every song is over the top, so to speak. I think he needs to think about tempering and staying within the realm of real bass singing. I know it's just me, right? But I seriously think some of their work is just the harmonies of notes and isn't always pleasant to listen to. Interesting, yes, but it just ain't pretty. Sorry, just my opinion, you can take it or leave it.
1/10 opinion would leave it aside
He is actually NOT going lower than bass instruments. His B0's here are the lowest note on a 5-string bass guitar. Many bass instruments go much lower. The bass clef is written for voice, by the way, and not originally for instrumentation. Bass instruments play exactly one octave deeper than is written on the bass clef. Geoff's natural chest range goes down to an F1, which is only one semitone above the lowest note on a 4-string bass (E1), by the way. If he sings naturally without subharmonics, his natural voice goes nearly as deep as a conventional double bass. If Geoff sang 100% in chest voice, his range would be F1-B4... that's still nearly an octave deeper than a conventional bass to that of an average tenor. You really need to evaluate what you're saying and put it into context with the musical knowledge I just bestowed upon you.
I guess you've never heard of an Oktavist. Trust me, Geoff is not the deepest bass out there; my voice is deeper than Geoff's. The honor for deepest chest voice goes to Mikhail Zlatopolsky, who could reach double low C (C1) in pure chest voice. czcams.com/video/nkL9Dp2rRw0/video.html
@@johndeeregreen4592 Tim Storms holds the current record for the lowest recorded voice ever, but what are we really talking about here. Below a certain point octaves become meaningless because all you do to go an octave lower is halve the frequency. What's the difference between 1 Hz and 2 Hz? An octave. The human ear can't distinguish individual notes on the octave between 1 and 2 Hz, and I doubt anyone could hit any of those pitches with any accuracy. At those frequencies you aren't listening to a musical note, you're counting the rattling vibrations. Yes, I know that there are Didgeridoos and alpine horns that can produce sounds like those, and yeah, if you detuned a bass guitar enough you could get some really god-awful sounds that way. My point is that it has no musical value beyond making noise. Showing off that you can rattle your vocal chords at that low a frequency isn't singing. Doing it once in a song for an emphasis might be interesting, but doing it all the time get's a bit annoying. I'm far more interested in the beauty of a great bass than in rattling my windows.
@@scottrbloom, the human ear isn't going to hear a note as low as Tim Storms can reach, anyway. Vocal fry like Tim Storms uses is pure chit to sing with, so there is that. But, anyway, speaking of Geoff, his notes are well within the spot of human hearing to sound just fine. Plus, the majority of Geoff's singing falls between C2-C4. This is only slightly deeper than an average bass singer. An average bass singer's tessitura falls between G2-C4... notice how the bass tessitura starts a whole step below an average baritone's lowest note. Geoff's tessitura is only a perfect 4th deeper than this, which isn't absurd, by any means.
You need to check out Voiceplay's cover of "In the Air Tonight"
This one is by far their best I've seen, but if you haven't done Dragonborn, it is a must for all gamers. It even has an easter egg where Goeffe throws in the old Final Fantasy Midi tune. Their We Don't talk about Bruno is hilarious and so amazingly well done! If you haven't done Home Free, you have to jump over to them for a bit. They don't go crazy with the theater and costumes, but the talent and unity they have is gorgeous. Plus they genuinely love their fans and are family friendly which is very rare.
